      As an immigrant whose lived in several countries I can I have loved living in this country. I was born in Sweden and lived there for a time until I moved to the US.
      Growing up I can say I felt xenophobia in both countries. Even though I lived in Sweden for much of my childhood I never felt like a Swede. It was my birth country but not my home country. In the US it’s a bit easier to feel “ American” because technically everybody here immigrated. There is no thousands of years of American history unless you are one of the indigenous people. While Swedish culture and history has been apart of the country for thousands of years. Harder to integrate to a country that isn’t used to integrating like the US is.

    • @missylarsson3517
      @missylarsson3517 Pƙed 4 lety +6

      Sadak Hassan As a Swede I have also learnt that our culture itself is quite hard to integrate into.
      Swedes are in general polite and honest but as a people we are not very welcoming and social. It is not a custom to invite people outside family in for holidays etc. and we usually stick to people we know from growing up, or while studying etc. It is seen as strange to engage in contact meeting people in grocery stores or at the bus. We are not a people of small talk and it can be reaaally hard for people coming here to integrate because the lack of genuine interaction as Swedes usually build that friendship up through years.
      Then again we have been a homogeneous population for a long time compared to US and there are some “social contracts” that most Swedes respect that can be hard for foreigners to grasp. Where I grew up, if you found a phone or wallet on the bus you would return it to the owner. However in many countries that would never happen! In general we have lived safe lives for a long time, while many people coming here have not been as privileged and had to hustle and fight to get where they are. This creates a lot of friction as we have different expectations from strangers and society.
      Unfortunately I have heard many stories of people not feeling welcome in Sweden and I think it is due to many factors, most to which you mentioned. Also we have taken in a lot of refugees recently. If all other countries in Europe had taken in as many refugees as Sweden did per capita there would be no more refugees in the world! But yes we have taken in many and tbh we have not been able to keep up with the integration like the system with school and work that the Syrian lady mentioned. The year first years of wars Sweden took more than ten times the amount of Syrian refugees compared to USA, and we are only 10 million compared to 300 million in the USA. I think this will stabilize in the longer run but right now unfortunately many Swedes are becoming racist because we have taken in many and they see their country changing suddenly in many aspects. Also this change in demographics have happened quite suddenly. However I think most swedes are still welcoming (in the Swedish reserved way) and believe that refugees deserve better lives even though we had to change our laws in order to accommodate the people that are here now.

    • @sabinajoh
      @sabinajoh Pƙed 4 lety +2

      Missy Larsson I wouldn’t say a lot of Swedes have become racist in recent years. A few? Probably. But a lot? No.
      (This post is not only directed at you, and I have no ill will :) I’ve heard a lot of arguments and just wanted to share a few thoughts)
      I think it’s more about people villianizing each other because people are stressed and scared (I would think this isn’t just born-in-Sweden swedes) and the government isn’t coming up with things to fix it, wanting to pretend we’re fine. When crime statistics are being skewed, news from public service is arguably being angled at times, people are getting raped, feeling generally unsafe, some places have gang issues, grenades , stabbings in broad day light etc.
      I’ve heard of kindergarten children spitting in each other’s faces because they are from countries currently at war with each other. (I find this very sad because country of origin shouldn’t matter at all)
      Idk, it’s a whole mess that needs fixing in some way and when that doesn’t happen, more separation occurs within the country, creating an evil circle.
      I just think we should halt before just calling someone racist because I’m afraid that’ll cause even more separation, when a conversation could be more beneficial.
      (I would go as far as saying that the majority of people voting for the Swedish Democrats probably have the exact same thinking as you, but have simply given up on what’s being offered by the traditional parties. (I’m using them as an example because ppl are quick to call them racist when I don’t think that’s the case with most of them.))
      But to go back to assimilation in Sweden, we are so asocial and reserved, I’m not surprised people find it hard to feel included/make friends. And what’s happening now is sadly not making it easier ;(
      I really hope we figure something out soon

      VoidX Don’t forget that you already reside in a first-world country with unlimited access to the internet, many language classes, leisure time, clean drinking water, and a roof over your head. The immigrants you speak of have none of that. With time, everyone will adapt to speak the language even if they don’t want to. Here in America, most immigrants from South America pick up the language very quickly. Middle-eastern immigrants have a harder time picking up the language because their language is very different from English, so it takes a couple of years to gain proficiency. @@eminahodzik First of all, Kosovo is a part of Serbia,always was and always will be, and the war was a product of politics that wanted Yugoslavia to fall apart. I don't know where are you from, nor does it really matter, as long as you get your facts straight. You talk about what Albania and 'Kosovo' went through? And dismiss everyone else's horrors? There were monstrosities that happened all over Balkans in that period. Numbers don't lie but, unfortunately, history is always written by those who won. And Albania won. They systematically invested enormous amounts of money in land in Kosovo and sent out families from Albania to live there. They thought them that Kosovo is their homeland, where their ancestors lived and so on. I can't and won't blame anyone personally, but i will ask of you to educate yourself, but go to outside sources, go read something that was written by somebody who had nothing to gain. It will tell you that Kosovo was a part of Serbia since mid 14th century, and inhabited by Serbs long before that. They turned us against each other, purposefully, for decades. They thought Albanians that Kosovo is theirs and they thought Serbs the same thing. This 'campaign' started early in 1960s and finally exploded in 1992. They succeeded. Yugoslavia doesn't exist anymore, and therefore can't be a threat or hold any power, and the nations hate and will hate each other for generations and generations more. It's hard to forget something like that, let alone forgive. So maybe if we all stop with the hate speech and any further destructions and promotions of mass murder : like 'great Albania'- the idea that a large number of Albanians support which essentially wants to 'unite' Albania, 'Kosovo', and more parts of Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Greece - and do it by ethnically cleansing this lands of anyone who isn't Albanian. Maybe, when all this monstrous ideas are gone, well, maybe then we will all start to heal. Hopefully.

    My biggest regret is forgetting Swahili. I came here when I was 4 (not as a refugee) and forced myself to assimilate because of the bullying and shame that came from being an immigrant. Especially a black immigrant because African Americans didn’t accept me and neither did white people and everyone in between. I remember being so happy that I had finally made my first friend in America. She was Chinese and very sweet but a couple months later her grandmother had found out and told her to stop being my friend, for obvious reasons. She says that she speaks the language and she has experienced the poor years ( 1985-1991) given from that she said they were very poor which was uncommon for the early years of communist Bulgaria. However, communism fell in 1991 and people were allowed to leave the country so I wonder how was she given refugee status? We have had no civil war or been in a war since ww2. The year we became a democracy we joined NATO and in 2008 we joined the EU. If somebody could suggest ideas I will be really thankful as I am curious to how she was given the status of "refugee".
