Hey guys! I'm a doctor and I have to make a clarification about not eating while in labor - if you need an emergency surgery the risk of vomiting and then aspirating your vomit (breathing it into your lungs) is not necessarily high, but high enough of a risk that we don't want to take it. Also if you're in a c section (where most mommas are awake) and you start vomiting, it's hard not to choke on it because you're lying extremely flat. Having vomit in your lungs is really bad because it's so acidic and can cause some serious issues for mom. But I've also never been pregnant, so I don't have the first-hand experience of how horrible this is lol. Good luck with your symptoms Colleen!

It happened to my friend, she went into hospital feeling ill and she devastatingly had to give birth to a stillborn. She was pretty much 9 months pregnant and she had no idea - she still had periods each month throughout the pregnancy and no pregnancy symptoms.
It was a huge shock to us all and was really sad because he died in the womb but she had to still give birth to him, despite not even knowing she was pregnant the day before. (She had preeclampsia). I can't imagine how traumatic that was for her to go through 😢

  • @courtneybultman
    @courtneybultman Před 3 lety +52

I know everyone likes to make the realization that pregnancy is 10 months not 9 but that actually isn't true it is 9 months. The reason people think its 10 is because its 40 weeks and they think 40 weeks, 4 weeks in a month, 10 months. But actually our months are approximately 4.5 weeks each so it is actually 9 months. Doesn't really matter but just thought I'd clarify that. Lol

Hi bestie NICU nurse here!! They don’t want you eating any solid foods bc if you throw up during birth or (worst case scenario) have to go into an emergency c section or surgery for some reason and throw up, you could aspirate (choke) on vomit and then it can end up in your lungs, which can cause complications with breathing, leading to a breathing tube, pneumonia, etc. it is very necessary not to eat solid foods during labor! But yes ~clear/ transparent~ liquids such as APPLE JUICE, lemonade, popsicles, etc are okay and usually encouraged 🤪so excited you’re having twins I’ve watched you for years so this is my NICU nurse dream come true 🤩 love u

Canadian Labour & Delivery nurse here - generally we allow pregnant patients to eat until active labour or if they chose to get an epidural. After that they are put on a clear liquid diet, meaning any translucent liquid (ie apple juice, jello, popsicles, water/ice chips). We recommend this because in the case of an emergency requiring increased anaesthesia or intubation the patient won't be able to protect their own airway and the risk of aspirating stomach contents increases. For planned c-sections we require patients to fast for 8 hrs prior to surgery for this reason! This is a potentially life-saving measure and not made just for healthcare worker convenience. Clear liquids exit the stomach faster than solids which is why they are allowed in labour. Hope that clears things up, congrats Colleen!
*Disclaimer: Recommendations may vary based on your specific circumstances and region. Please listen to your healthcare provider as they know you best, these are just general recommendations for low-risk labouring patients!

  • @telmabjorkgudnadottir2364

I had a 12 hour labour with my first.
I had my first baby on Christmas Eve in 2019.
I had a really great pregnancy (so grateful for that). I was healthy, had very little pain or discomfort the whole time, no Braxton Hicks or anything.
At 4am on December 24th I woke up with a slight twinge of pain, I went to the bathroom and there was a little bit of blood on the paper when I wiped.
The twinges of pain kept coming every 4-7 minutes and got worse.
I called my husband, who was working a nightshift, around 5 am and told him it might be time. He rushed home right away. I called my midwife around 6am and she told me to come in to the hospital to check me out.
We went to the hospital around 7-7:30 and I was dialated 4cm when my midwife checked me. The pain got a lot worse, I felt shaky, I had chills, I threw up several times. She checked me again and I was at 5cm now.
I was really looking forward to get into the birthing bath that they had at my hospital. Around 11 am they were filling it up, then I felt a pop, my water had broken. I looked and it was murky green, dark and gunky. Meconium.
My midwife said they have to move me to a bigger hospital, that has a birthing doctor, (my hospital only has midwifery) and a surgeon in case there are complications. They put me in an ambulance, my husband, who is freaking out, rode in the front.
We got to the bigger hospital around noon, the midwife that met us at the hospital looked at my chart and said was there because of meconium and that I was progressing too slowly.
I had to be connected to monitors for the rest of the birth so my hopes for a water birth were dashed.
Around 3pm I was fully dialated and it actually felt like a relief because at least now I got a short break from the pain between contractions.
I pushed for a bit less than an hour, the "ring of fire" is truly excruciating and felt like an out of body experience, because I could hear myself screaming but it didn't feel like it was me making that awful sound.
At 3:58pm my son was born, perfectly healthy and absolutely beautiful, around 12 hours after my first twinge of pain.
This was the most memorable and wonderful Christmas of my life despite spending it in the hospital ❤️

hi colleen you should look up full liquid diet vs clear liquid diet! i’m a nursing student and it was so cute you two reacting to all the clear liquid stuff - sorry your nurse didn’t offer you anything other than ice chips if you were a clear liquid diet, not sure if you were ordered NPO (nothing by mouth) at any point which in most cases you can only have minimal ice chips. this labor definitely ask them for all the choices they have :) so happy for you and wish you nothing but a safe, healthy pregnancy 💗💕

Literally as I was going to ask for it my nurse was coming in to tell me my white blood count was too high for an epidural and I would be at risk of infection if I got one 😭 it was brutal but I got through it and my daughter is now 14 months! It wasn't traumatic enough for me to want to try again! We are on month 4 of trying so if anyone reading this wants to send us some baby vibes we'd appreciate that! 💕

@Julia Eynon I saw a video once about a woman who was pregnant and the baby was positioned in a way where the mom didn’t show (baby’s back was against moms back) and because of that, she wasn’t showing AT all. She went to the doctor and the doctor rotated the baby. The next day, she looked like she was 8 months pregnant (BECAUSE SHE WAS). So I guess coupled with something similar, maybe a false negative pregnancy test, and mild pregnancy symptoms that seem explainable, that’s probably how people don’t think they are pregnant.

Our daughter was born last April, just three weeks into lockdown. Her birth was tough, but I was really proud of myself for getting though it. My water broke the day before her due date and I was really bummed because I knew that meant I had to go to the hospital rather than laboring at home (something I wanted even before the pandemic). It was really important to me that I not get pressure to have an epidural, so we were really clear about that from the beginning and they mostly left us alone in our room (using a Bluetooth monitor to keep an eye on everyone's vitals). Progress was super slow though and after 28 hours of intermittent and inconsistent contractions they administered pitocin. I was really grateful that the midwife and nurses were willing to have an actual conversation with us about the pitocin levels so we could keep it low enough that I could work through the contractions without medication. We had a fantastic doula and my husband was super hands on and a huge source of support and encouragement. After about 40 hours of labor (I definitely snuck snacks) Miss Tilly was born. She's our sweet daredevil stinkerpuss and we love her to bits. Hopefully now that the grandparents and our friends are getting vaccinated she can actually spend time with other people. Congratulations to you both and I really looking forward to sharing in your excitement over the next 9+ months!
