DRZ400SM Carburetor Removal / Pilot Jet Removal

- 2008 DRZ400SM with Dynojet Jet Kit. May also work for DRZ400S. I think the DRZ400E uses a different carb so ymmv. I am using a Clymer Repair Manual as a reference.
---------------
***ERRORS:
At 5:50, the pilot jet numbers are reversed. It should be: OEM - 22.5, DJ Kit - 25.
At 11:24, it is the starter (choke) jet, NOT the pilot mixture screw.
---------------
When I bought the bike, it sat for a couple of years and was sparingly used monthly. It was running lean, needed the throttle cracked open slightly or it would die, and was backfiring a lot on deceleration. Took apart the carb to clean it and found that the pilot jet was clogged. Hope this can help out others.

Blimey ! I've got one of these and i can't believe you have to go to soooo much trouble just to remove a carb.
Kinda makes me yearn for a Suzuki TS 185 again. So much simpler.
Thanks for the vid. just did mine and she's purring like a kitten again.
Getting it back in is actually harder than rocket science.
I have the exact issue with mine as youre describing! Im gonna give the pilot valve clean a shot
Hey man, Thanks for sharing! I found the video very helpful!
thanks papa. some good detail and primer course. my 2007 drz needs some carb care,
great video. videos like this make me love youtube as a DIY mechanic
I learned the trade at Kamikc's House of Braaap. :-)
Yeah, any footage of tuning the fuel screw and idle adjustment screw would be appreciated. I messed around with the idle screw a bit but without knowing how fast it's supposed to idle, I might as well just piss into the wind. =)
what is that big hose you pointed out right before u put it back in mine doesnt have that on my klx400rs
I don't suppose you have any videos of tuning the fuel screw and idle adjustment knobs?
Yamaha Raptor petcock and then cap off the vacuum line on the bike? Is it a drop in fit?
And can you point out where the fuel screw is in this video?
At 12:30... what is the line you hook back up ??
The red float thingy inside the float bowl, what is its function? Thanks
"Show's Tavern".....awesome place to turn a wrench and get your beer and pizza on.
=)
Does anybody know what that useless hose to the right off the choke is called or what its for?
Mine does that. It's pretty annoying. I think it does that because the exhaust packing is low.
Is it absolutely necessary to disassemble the entire carb just to access the piolet jet?
It's not so bad. Worst part is removing the carb from the rubber boots. It's a little tricky but more than doable.
isnt the petcock connected to the fuel line?
All E models after 2003 have the Mikuni CV BSR36. (carb in the vid)
Not all E models. All E models in the US. In some other markets, the E model still (2019) comes with the Keihin FCR39.
How do i make my exhaust spit flames / crackle when i back off the throttle like some people have videos of.
vag ina it’s bad for the engine but you can hit the kill switch while driving down the road and quick turn it back on. And it will give you a good pop
ive never taken apart my carb to even clean it since i got it she tends to die when i hit the throttle hard whenever i am in netural or clutch it just like a fast brap she will die i need to xlean it but im scared lol
Im thinking of taking mine off this weekend and checking the pilot jet as all of a sudden its lost lots of acceleration! Starts and runs fine on idle but no power over 40mph+ could it being blocked up be my problem??
I have the same problem! And am thinking the same. Did you get to the bottom of it?
The way i fixed it was by doing nothing, apart from using it! let the engine warm up and go for a small 15 min spin then pull up somewhere deserted and red line it once or twice then continue riding, after a few miles mine cleared itself!
What was the book you had that showed all the pictures?
Clymer DRZ-400SM service manual which costs around $30. It's adequate for minor things but for major stuff I'd spend the $70 on the OEM Suzuki service manual which is far more detailed and thorough.
So help me I love a good how-to video. Brap braaaaaap
This helped. BUt man is it a pain to remove that thing...
The trick is to use a wrench on the rubber boot connecting the carb to the airbox (rear boot). Press the wrench in towards the side of the boot and then press towards the rear (press hard!). Have someone hold the bike for you so it doesn't roll or tip over. By doing this you relieve most if the tension from the boots that are holding the carb in place.
Remove the pair of ten mm bolts on the rectifier and sit it to the side. I used the handle of a long wrench to pry the air box boot back while using the vertical subframe as a fulcrum. Also make sure to connect and disconnect your throttle cables BEFORE getting your rubber boots where you want them.
I'm pretty sure the stock pilot is 22.5..
yeah it is ,
OMG I am getting dizzy. Ever heard of a tripod?
At 10:19. WHAT?
The BEST. =)
Is this the same for new models of 400SM??
Yes
Lol, there are no "new" models. Same damn bike every year of production.
good vid. but everything is "go ahead" do this, "go ahead" do that. then you wanna "go ahead" and do this... lmaoo
imotomoves I'm camera shy. :-)
