    They’re right, as a sonar supervisor on submarines, surface warships were not really a threat or concern by themselves. It is their helicopters that are dangerous. A submarine can’t outrun a helicopter or airplane, if they find you. The best way to find a submarine is with another submarine, then airborne sub hunters.

    I was a sonar tech in the US Navy on a destroyer (USS Deyo, DD-989). The sonar system I manned was the same series as the one in The Hunt for Red October and Tom Clancy portrayed it quite accurately! I was in the Navy pre-internet so all personnel comms w/family were snail mail. And I was "lucky" in that I only had a girlfriend so I didn't miss births, first words & steps, graduations, like some of the married men did.
    My story (STGSN at the time): Off the coast of Africa we got notified of a Russian sub exiting the Strait of Gibraltar into the Atlantic and I was on-duty. I picked it up passively and tracked it for about 150 miles as it headed north. It stayed above the thermocline, which made tracking somewhat easier, and one of my shipmates was able to identify it using another piece of sonar gear based on the noises it made (e.g. number of props, blades on each prop, engine harmonics, etc.). Since our mission was the Persian Gulf we didn't follow it but passed on our data to the fleet up north once I started losing her. Then it was about 5 boring months in the middle east and nearby waters.
    I wonder why the captain didn't go active on her, being that the sub clearly knew their location so going active wouldn't have given their position away. The ping would have been extremely loud inside the sub and likely would've made everyone inside pucker a bit ! Hmmm, since you typically don't go active unless you want a firing solution maybe it was good he didn't order it...

    • @DougHanchard
      @DougHanchard Před 2 měsíci +4

      Going active poses several tactics problems, including counter-response scenarios HMS Northumberland would have to prepare for.
      That the submarine turned into the array was no doubt, either pure dumb luck by the Russian Skipper as suggested or genius. One could suggest Tom Clancy's fictional Crazy Ivan tactic was in play, given the parallel course Northumberland (ahead / abeam) relative to the Russian sub.
      The other problem going active is it gives the Sub an instant firing solution and additional frequency data.
      This is particularly important if the decision to go active is made after the Subs impact with the towed array.
      Thus, I suspect the Captain would not go active with a fully functional array, then compound his defensive posture limitations once the array was determined to be permanently damaged.
      Good hunting.

    • @zoolkhan
      @zoolkhan Před 3 měsíci +1

      @ussell7760 yeah, i have been in such exercises
      - they come announced (i.e. "this is a drill - fire fire fire")
      and not during a serious mission.
      And you would use a smoke generator, damage contol teams at the ready - because its manuver time -
      You would not trigger a real life transformer to fail...
      to simulate how to deal with smoke and fire.
      The sailors all did an amendable job
      i am not critizisin the crew at all here - but the ship needs some serious yard time looks like...
      with the now physically broken sonar, they maybe get it.
      It was astounding to notice the absence of damage control teams at the ready - those would have been visible if it was just an excercise.
      They only starting to suit up when they localized the closer area...
      another thing they did not show is the stopping of all ships ventilation.
      When you have smoke on board - the first thing that has to happen is shutting down aircon and ventilation.
      It will get stuffy in there, but that is better than carbon-monoxide poisoning.
      ----
      I also noticed they fry with fat in the kitchen like a traditional burger shop on land.
      The german navy does not do that anymore since an even where a fat-fryer caused a massive fire on board...
      (that was 1990, not sure what regs came out after that)

How it can be secret, when Russians know it and you are publishing that port location to CZcams? Anyway, they had more problems within a crew, so they just left and finally reached back to UK port and their crew was threated against stuffy nose and Covid. I have to ask a question. Does the towed sonar array have a redundant system such as the old style sonar head or perhaps a spare towed array on board ship that can be deployed to replace the damaged array?

    • @jastinguy
      @jastinguy Před 3 měsíci

      Arrays take up a lot of space on board. They might be able to replace some of the microphones and other sensitive equipment attached to the array but if the cable itself is damaged then it's GG.

      @jastinguy more of a surprise they didn't send one of their own subs. As versatile some surface ships are, a sub is the best sub hunter.

    • @connorjohnson4402
      @connorjohnson4402 Před 2 měsíci

      Well the ship itself does have sonar elements on its hull but the towed array vastly increases their capabilities since it can sink down deeper and when it comes to a sonar array there is no real substitute for physical size, the longer or larger the array is the better it can perform. But I'm not sure toomany ships have a full spare on board, a few km long cable spooled up is not a small or light thing.

    I would NOT want to serve on this ship! We would have called this a complete "clusterf**k." 1)They went to search for Russian submarines and only carried enough sonar buoys for one helicopter flight. Seriously? 2) While trying to isolate an overheating, smoking transformer, they trip the wrong breaker and shut down the entire navigation system. All while conducting an anti-submarine operation. 3) They were completely played by the Russian sub. The sub sat around and waited for them to find it. When they couldn't find it, the sub went to the surface and said, "Here we are!" Then when the ship took the bait and started tracking them again, the Russians took out their sonar. Basically, the Russians told them, "If we were playing for real, you would all be fish food right now!" I was embarrassed for them from just watching this. They seemed to think that it was bad luck. No, it was utter incompetence. When the CO said that it was an accident on the part of the Russians, you could see on his face that he didn't believe that. The CO should be relieved of command.
