Ok, New Zealander here. David French has lots of great ideas, BUT he never gets to the specifics in this talk. Not even once. And I believe that’s where the problems really lie. If one side believes killing the unborn is moral (even to be celebrated according to the latest narrative I heard) and the other side believes it is murdering the unborn, how are you going to reconcile? Simple - you cannot. It’s not possible. So in New Zealand, we let the liberals win, the Christian’s say nothing, and we all get on with loving and accepting each other. Meanwhile 16000 unborn babies per year are killed. In summary: David’s talk was next to useless. We learned some sophisticated academic phrases, wowed ourselves with his Harvard brilliance, and left with a message to get on with each other, which cannot happen while each side holds firmly to their views about, per my example, of abortion. That’s the problem. Our worldview are simply incompatible, fundamentally.

Well said. Jesus will spit the “lukewarm” out. He also stated that He didn’t come to “unify”
Mankind. He came to reconcile individuals to God Full stop. “Getting along” with ungodly wasn’t His teaching at all. Dealing with the sin in the human heart was

Also, I’ve never voted for a man or trust man. I vote for the party that upholds my values the best. Republican platforms still upholds the ideas of Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (pursue your dreams, job etc)

I don't believe it's about "who's for or against 'it'," but rather what being involved in "it" means accepting, and what accepting what being involved in "it" means accepting causes to society. It's not a football game. It doesn't end when the clock runs out. It doesn't get forgotten when the season's over. It's about the embrace or rejection of fundamental values one finds potentially repulsive, ungodly, unholy, and also antithetical to the gifts God has bestowed on America. It is fundamental to the core, and has ramifications that will last for centuries.
But yes, we should love our enemies, and also be open to correction ourselves.

@Grandfather_Din_Racket I guess the assumption, then, is that we all agree on what "rational" or "irrational" is, but I don't believe that's the case. I think those words are to be defined based on what one values the most, and thus on what one believes is the ultimate reality. If one's ultimate reality says "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you," then it would be perfectly rational for one to love their own enemies. Or if one's ultimate reality says "while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of his son," then it would be perfectly rational to be willing to be reconciled to our enemies, even at loss to ourselves.
I would say, however, that love is not always what one thinks it might be. In an extreme case, such as Hitler, killing him may have been the most loving thing to do for him. Had someone killed him after he had killed only say, 10,000 people, he wouldn't be facing the judgment he now is facing for having murdered 12 million.

He's confusing feelings with reality. He's appealing to people who want to feel like they're safe and nothing is wrong. The Bible doesn't say to fear because actually nothing is happening and you're being alarmist. It says fear not because God is with you come hell or highwater or whatever the phrase is. It says "Shit could be hitting the fan all around you, but despite that, fear not because I'm with you." NOT, "nothing is happening, don't worry about it."

Probably the irony of a guy who makes a living criticizing everyone to the left or right of his tiny clique of elite conservative Christian political centrist talking about unity.

Thank you, David for a well-reasoned take on a growing problem.
I disagree with and dislike almost every position the Democratic party takes, but that opposition does not give me sanction to hate those who hold that position. I know how important it is to engage with ideas instead of attacking people: I used to believe many of those same Democratic ideas. If someone hadn't taken the time to engage with me intellectually, I would not have questioned them and started looking for the truth.

I am no longer a Democrat, but have never been a Republican and I’m an atheist. I haven’t voted for a Dem POTUS since 2012, and that was a mistake! 🤬I agree with everything David said. We are too divided over some dumb 💩. The only reason I’ve heard of David was because of my uncle and I want to understand how everyone thinks! 😉

It's a bit more nuanced that french is letting on, for instance you had Trump advocating vaccines and masks despite most of his voting block being against those measures, based on the merit and efficacy of those measures it wasn't just blind partisanship
