  • Our friends at Wouxun and Buy Two Way Radios recently rolled out a new radio, the KG-S72C that is one of the first to take advantage of the FCC's recent rules change to allow FM use on Citizens Band radio. While this radio features the quality and value that Wouxun has been known for, is it enough to change my mind about CB?

    I own the president Randy handheld cb as well as other cb radios. Legally cb has always been 4 watts on am. But legally you're not supposed to speed but most people do.
    Getting a good antenna makes the biggest difference though. I upgraded my cb antenna to a Stryker sr-a10 and have went from getting out 10 miles to over 30 in hilly Missouri no line of sight.
    Handhelds with little rubber ducky antennas I only her like half a mile to 2 miles. HT to HT. Antenna is everything though.

    Truckers ignore their CB’s or have them off. However, if the SHTF, it will transform to the #1 communications means within hours with literally millions deployed in trucks.
    Your neighbor might have a GMRS, but countless strangers near you will have CB radios when it counts.
    Also…old school guys do keep them on so as a car emergency radio you will be heard before too long….GMRS, no.

    Sadly we don't have license-free GMRS here in europe, we are stuck to CB (4 Watt 27 MHz and custom antennas) or PMR (0,5 Watt 446 MHz no custom antennas) or in germany maybe freenet (1 Watt 149 MHz and custom antennas).

    My son in law has a CB in his truck, so I recently bought one of those old “emergency CB car kits” that were popular back in the 80s so that we could communicate more easily on trips. After watching your video I started wondering how far it would reach out. So I pulled my wife’s old CB out of our storage shed (it is so old that it still has her FCC license call sign labeled on it), hooked it up to an old mag mount antenna, and had my daughter monitor it while I drove around with my “emergency” unit. I was surprised to discover that it was good up to 2-3 miles, depending on which direction I traveled.
    My two CBs (which could be found at a yard sale for next to nothing), mounted to cheap lousy antennas, are far more practical in “The Real World” than the expensive new Wouxon! Not really surprising, but it just goes to show how useless a hand held CB FM radio without a long whip really is.

    • @redfonzie21
      @redfonzie21 Před rokem

      That's the thing. A good antenna is the #1 most important part of the setup. Granted as limited as the Wouxon is it would be difficult to do, but putting on a decent antenna and operating with a full 4 watts on AM or FM would probably at least pull out a decent signal - even a Wal-Mart mag-mount one on top of a car roof or trunk lid.
      But mobile to mobile, solid power, solid antenna setup, proper mic for good modulation clarity, it's going to be much better for SO much less money!

      T hat "antenna" on the hand help is worse than a stubby duckie on GMRS. It's a rubber coated dummy load. That's 90% of the issue. A 1/4 wave on 2 meters is 19 inches, on GMRS it's 6.3 inches. 1/4 wave on CB (27Mhz) is 108 inches

  • @jeffdwyer6105
    @jeffdwyer6105 Před rokem +4

    The primary reason you have so poor range is the antenna . A 1/4 wave antenna on GMRS is only 8 inches , 2M ham is 20 inches . A 1/4 wave antenna for CB is 8 FEET . If you tested an old school metal cased CB from the 1970's with a 4 ft antenna , you will get your 2 miles even on AM . Ive worked with tunable 'Centurian' brand Low band antennas in the commercial radio business and they kinda suck too . These chinese junk antennas are not even tuned and could not cover even 20khz bandwidth . Just remember , 4 watts is 4 watts , if you connected that portable to a base antenna you would get 10 to 20 miles easily .

    • @stevenemert837
      @stevenemert837 Před rokem +1

      @Jeff Dwyer - You beat me to it. Exactly correct. I remember as a teenager using a 100 mw handheld CB with a long 3 or 4 ft whip antenna and making contact many miles away. With a 4W mobile base unit and a 1/4 wave vertical antenna on the roof, I talked to people more than 20 to 30 miles away.

    • @minarchisttrucker2775
      @minarchisttrucker2775 Před rokem

      Yeah exactly. Antenna is everything in cb. I mean running illegal power can help but the biggest improvement I've ever got was from upgrading from a 30ish inch wilson lil will to see Stryker magnetic antenna (basically a wilson 5000) which is like 62 inch. I went from talking 10 miles in a hilly area (no direct line of sight mind you) to 30+ miles

  • @billcurtis7855
    @billcurtis7855 Před 6 měsíci

    Yeah. If you really want to wake this portable up, connect a 100 inch wire to the ground connection. That will create a radial. It will make the 2 watts AM perform better than 10 watts on its current antenna system. Granted, it will look funny. But that portable isn't large enough to give the radio a good ground system due to the size of wavelength. 1/4 wave at GMRS is near 6 inches, so that makes GMRS much more efficient using a small antenna on a portable. I bet if you put this portable on a mobile mount antenna or a base antenna, it'll do quite well. It has a super heterodyne receiver which is very good, and the receiver sensitivity specs on paper are better than any CB I've seen before.

  • @Sui778
    @Sui778 Před měsícem

    The SMA connector is very weak and comes loose very easily. Modulation is terrible on this thing in AM mode - maybe 40% on a good day. FM mode does have better modulation, but isn't all that great either. There doesn't seem to be any service menus either to adjust modulation on this radio. Don't waste your money - just get a President Randy II FCC. Or a President Randy III. Those are much better handheld radios for CB.

      Yes, but unless you dial back the power to use it within the legal limits of FRS and MURS frequencies or you have a GMRS license or HAM Radio license, it's still illegal to use on those frequencies.
      And then there is the issue of type acceptance for each service you intend to use it on, AND spurious emissions, and again licensing.
