This is my first outing on a hydrofoiling Moth. I'm an old laser sailor, looking for a new challenge and this boat is definitely that. With no static stability, its a lot like learning to ride a bicycle. After tipping this way and that for a couple of minutes though, I was able to (sort-of) find stability, and when you do that, the next gust of wind lifts the boat right up out of the water and accelerates up to speeds illegal in most harbors.
That first lift out of the water is both exhilirating and actually scary. Suddenly you lift several feet up in the air and accelerate to twice the speed of the wind. There is no spray, so the ride is silent. The rudder has no hull between it and the centerboard, so any little tweak and you feel like you're going to be thrown out of the boat.
At least until you crash. Sailboats capsize, Moths crash. Once I was up on the foil, I had a 'Now what do I do?' moment which resulted in hitting the water about 2 seconds later.
Still, how can sailing ever be the same after you've done this? It is a profoundly new experience, qualitatively different from any other sailing I've ever done, and I've sailed my share of dinghys, catamarans windsurfers and keelboats. How to explain? No words here.
I left the water dead tired but hooked, and with sore muscles where I've never experienced sore muscles before.
Huzzah! Good job, man. You are a trooper. When is your next attempt? I would love to see it.
Good job man.
😂 great commentary
When I catch my breath.
