  • Seiko's SARB series of watches are among the most popular offerings from SEIKO. Although very similar, the SARY series tends to fly a bit under the radar by comparison. For this video we compare two of the most popular watches within each series, Seiko's SARB035 with a cream color dial and the SARY057 with a gorgeous gloss black dial.
Which did we like better? Watch and find out!
If you want more info on the SARY057, check out our last video here, we gave it an in depth look: • Seiko SARY057 Review -...

From a hardware perspective I would say the SARB is definitely the better watch. Higher grade movement with a longer power reserve, better clasp, better finishing on the hands and indices(in my opinion.) But the SARY is definitely a good watch for it's price point. I just think the SARB offers more quality, more value.

The dramatic turndown curve of the lugs makes straps fit better. That’s why these watches are so good with aftermarket straps; the lug holes are closer to the wrist

I just finally got around to picking up a Sarb35. I'm glad I did, it's got something. I agree that a bit larger with screw-down would be cool. I wouldn't mess with the hands though, they're key to the Sarb. I think an MM300 is next on the Seiko map for me, but the new GS SLGH003, with the new movement in steel... that's got me going.

I know that the design of a square clasp head is limiting as far as microadjust but I also think that style is visually the most appealing design. Just a fine square with the branding or logo stamped on it. Even higher end watches like the Grand Seiko or even the Tag Heuer Carrera use this and I think it is simply a trade off you must ask yourself if it is worth it. To me it is because aesthetically it is the best clasp design to me.

Glad you are feeling better. Thanks very much for the comparison. Bought the SARB033 right around the time you did the review of the SARY. The SARB's 38mm case and 20mm tapered bracelet suit my 6.75" wrist perfectly. Running near dead on at a half second per day slow over its first 3 weeks. Love it and cannot recommend enough. Agree with your comments on inadequate microadjust, gap on clasp closure, desire for a slightly more sporty handset allowing increased lume, and desire for a screwdown crown. Those few minor "imperfections" are small prices to pay for such an extremely high value sub $350 watch.

Not sure if someone's mentioned this elsewhere to you in the last two years... but AR coating is often 'clear', meaning no colour. Watches with blue AR coating, where you see that blue colouration, chose that for aesthetics (either that or it's cheaper, I'm not certain!).

The reason for the turned down lugs on the big SARY is that it's a Japan market model -- a large watch designed to fit the slender wrists that are typical of the Japanese. I have really skinny wrists for a White guy, so of course I appreciate it that there's a company manufacturing 40+ mm timepieces for people my size!

I think both are fantastic watches, but the SARY057 wins for me. Day date is nicer to me and on my wrists, anything below 40mm tends to look funny since my forearms are so big lol.

  • @chrishunter9784
    @chrishunter9784 Před 6 lety +13

The SARY is a dress watch. With no lume, more elegant crown, and the better designed and fitting bracelet at the lugs, it states that undeniably. The SARB is a confused piece. Not sporty yet it has lume, supposedly dressy yet the bracelet doesn't fit the shape of the lugs in a refined way. The stepped case of the SARB is more interesting for sure, but for me, the SARY makes no bones about what it is. Wrist presence is a plus for me as well.

Both nice watches. I have the sarb and think it's the cat's meow for what I paid. I considered buying the sary, but the hands seemed too short for me. But I'd happily own and wear either. My experience with the 4r has been excellent, in fact one of my 4rs is the most accurate auto I've ever owned. My sarb is about plus 10 a day, perfectly ok with me. Great comparison.

I like the daydate function but just adore the smaller size of the Sarb. It wear like a Rolex and the quality and finishing made me question my older datejusts. It’s such a great watch it made me get a Marinemaster as I knew if I was that smitten on a £200/$220 Sarb I would be head over hills with the top quality diver. I was right, ended up selling all my watches bar the Sarb, mm300, a 1968 Lord Marvel and a 59 seamaster that has sentimental value.
The Sarb is the best bang for buck watch ever made in my opinion.

I own the Sarb035 and it was my second automatic watch (after a Seiko 5) and the quality is amazing. I purchased in 2015 and really did not know what I was getting into and how much value it was at $293. It really is one of the nicest watches out there for any price but also it sets the bar high for what you could get for your dollar and makes you mad when other watches (from other companies or even Seiko themselves) cut corners and you say, "well theh put that on my Sarb and it cost less." The minor little cons for the Sarb are easily overlooked because of the price and the fact that other watches more expensive has worse cons. I hate stamped clasp arms and normally you say because of price is why they do it but that is not true because Sarb has it. That is huge to me. You really have to climb into the 1k+ range to make sense to buy something over the Sarb.

No, I have them both, the Sary I have is the white dial and blue indices, I can hardly find any reason to put the SARB above the SARY. I would say that the SARY is a more impressive watch, it has very nice case, and the dial produces different tonalities and it's just way more fun to look at. The SARB is a very nice watch, but the lume, the small size and the boring looking dial make it a less attractive piece.

Sounds like people discuss early steam trains and comparing their steam engines, loudness od their manually-operated whistles and polished bronze parts!
These days more and more people are driving Priuses and Teslas and flying Boings and Airbuses.
Staying in yesterday and discussing advantages of one "steam engine" over the other is possessing little value to me.
