I love aviation as well but I was really interested to be a pilot but due to the coronavirus crisis the airlines have been severely affected and most pilot trainees are paying for their hours even after training and job vacancies have shrunken but I’m doing an ATC career because I love to be around with aircraft and i love them a lot

what is the upper age limit? is 40 yrs too old to be a trainee?

No upper limit in the UK/NATS, but other European countries it's usually 25 years, 31 years in the US.
