      @EndingBigotry Před rokem +5

      The only thing I can say about the auto-climbing from before is... it was made as a way to get back to a previous location for when you were exploring the opened world and they made it one smooth, swift action to grab the chain and rappel down. I, too, found it a bit annoying when all I wanted was to kick the chain down and continue instead of going back. However, from having dabbled in code and programming, I can also say it makes sense that they would code one specific action, test to make sure it works flawlessly with the animations included... then just copy and paste the code where they were going to use the chain. If you go and watch "Rasing Kratos", which is free on CZcams and is a 2hr documentary on them making the game... they only had two years to complete the rest of the game after the initial E3 showcase in 2016. So... yeah... they cut some corners, but 2018's game was super amazing regardless and such a minor thing can be ignored just because you only encounter it when you're setting things up for backtracking later and finding new shit with the tools you get to explore what you couldn't before.

    • @EndingBigotry
      @EndingBigotry Před rokem +1

      @@emilrogengellschwaner3555 The recalling of the axe was a mechanic thrown in there to make sure you had the axe when you were going to proceed with the story. Probably the same idea as the chains that they copied and pasted if you were going to use the Realm Travel room because it wouldn't make sense if you could call the axe through dimensions... which is basically what we see with this version of the Bifrost. All of the realms were layered on top of one another and were different according to what realm you went to... so you were dimensionally traveling. They probably used the "story progression axe recall" code with talking to Sindri, Brok or Freya because it typically progressed the story... plus when you talked to the Huldra brothers, you'd need your axe with you to upgrade it... so... it just "makes sense"? *shrugs*

    Love the review as always. But I have to disagree with you on Odin’s voice. In this game it’s very clear they were trying to make him appear as a master manipulator, so by giving him a friendlier voice, he comes across as someone to be trusted. It works perfectly considering we already knew Odin was evil, yet the writers were still able to make you second guess yourself just based off of his dialogue, voice and general demeanour. At first I thought Asgard was disappointing until you realize that Asgard from the point of view of the Vikings would have been like that and not the Marvel city of gold towers and wide streets. I was so intrigued to get to understand them more because they are more than their Godhood, they are people with insecurities, emotions, and weaknesses. I compare these characters to what we had in the first two Thor movies. Thor was over the top, and cringe at moments, where in God of War he feels like a person with deep flaws like massive Daddy issues. Almost from the beginning of meeting Thor you can feel a deep resentment he has for his father Odin who favored Baldur over Thor and Thor's children. Then, (SPOILERS) when Atreus and Thor are given a job by Odin, you can feel the tension between Thor and Atreus. Almost like Thor has hatred for him, not because he helped kill his Sons, but because he sees how Odin is favoring Atreus. I love the game but two things could have happened to make the story ascend.
      1. Have Kratos fight with Thor against Odin rather than Atreus. Have Thor die after the first part of the fight.
      2. Have Kratos become his old self before controlling it again. And when that happens, have Rage of Sparta playing in the background. They had a great chance to do this against Heimdall but didn't.

      All these people giving the game top scores forget what god of war is. Joe and most never played the old gow games. You've no idea how lackluster, and boring this game is compared to them.
      The story makes 0 sense, Odin did and does NOTHING wrong. How is he the villain again? Straight out he offers Kratos peace of they stop searching for Tyr. And he only kills brok because they plan to kill him.
      Everybody was done wrong here. Kratos turned to a bitch. Check out gow 2 or 3 and see how brutal and unforgiving he is. Atrejus is annoying and stupid as always, the mythology the real mythology is thrown out the window.
      First off, angroboda IS NOT BLACK. black washing bullshit. A black Viking? More over a black Viking woman, wife to a god? Yeah. Fuck off.
      Story takes ages to find itself. The character including yourself have no idea what to do or what they looking for for at least 6-7 hours into the game. First let's go find some paintings then let's find Tyr oh Tyr didn't work out let's find Freya oh Freya didn't work out let's find angroboda oh she didn't work out let's find Odin oh Odin didn't work out let's go back to father oh wait Odin did work out let's go back to Odin. For 15 hours the whole story is " it's destiny, we can't break it, we will die, you will hold me in your hands son and we will French kiss. And we don't want war. At all cost it must be avoided!
      Then, all of a sudden " general Kratos! Are you ready for war?" Bull fucking shit.
      Most of the gods were portrayed good, heimdallr was overly evil tho, and Odin was done very dirty. He isn't evil in the original mythology.
      Then at the ending they just kill Odin and all these nonsense custcenes 20 hours you spend for what? Nothing happened, you did nothing good, if you didn't go to war, everything would have been fine , atrejus didn't find any redemption, he just figured to go find more giants which could have been done without any killing.
      Gameplay and combat is very lackluster compared to old gow games. I expect a lot more variety in moves, weapons, and enemies. The few bosses there are are good, but again, nothing compared to say gow 3. Repetitive, nonsensical story, lackluster combat, idiotic characters, black washing, and the music???? What happened? 2018 was decent this is ? I can't remember a single song from this.

      It definently felt like they rushed things. I mean, you fight both Thor and Odin back to back in the same tiny, bland arena.. compare that to the incredibly climactic boss fight with Baldur in the last game with several phases and grand cinematic sequences. Whereas in this game, the most "exciting" part is when Odin divides his little arena circle into pizza slices. Like, the introduction fight with Thor was more impressive than what we ended up with at the end.
      Not to mention that the entire event of ragnarok is way shorter than the Angrboda "sidemission" section where you just aimlessly wander from point A to B and doing boring tasks like.. picking fruit..
      The phasing is all over the place. You go from super-slow phasing into full-on ragnarok in 5 seconds. We go from having no army to suddenly having the entire elven population fighting for us in one day (the same elves that has been at war with each other for thousands of years), just because they "like" freyr so much

    [Spoiler] The ragnarok invasion was the only let down for me. We had spent 2 games with Mimir drilling our ears about the end of times, the war to end all wars, and they foreshadowed how Kratos would have to pick up his general's banner in the end but did so little with it.
    I would have had Kratos take charge of the Raganrok army at the start of the final act and then have the player do the tour of the relms to rally everyone and then have a huge war room meeting planning the assault only for the final mission to play out kindof like medeval strategy warfare but without actual troops management on the player's part.
    Maybe even have Kratos not be on the front line right away but instead you play as Atreus carrying out the general's orders along with everyone else. Only for Ktratos to jump in as the much needed reinforcment showing Odin "the god he once was".
    So utimatly the ending was rushed a litttle after having such a slow pace. Another option would've been to have this game be called something else and end with a failed invasion where Surtr doesn't show up. And then have a third game that's all about the Ragnarok war which could be a long term battle split accross the realms (kinda like Mass Effect 3)

    I loved everything in the game EXCEPT the convuluted UI and ODIN'S BOSS FIGHT. Odin is supposed to be a master manipulator, the dark hand in the background but his boss fight does not reflect that personality. I had hoped that he would trap us in illusions of our ideal, happy worlds: Kratos having Feye and Freya having her son back, Atreus free from the burden of preventing ragnarok. Or perhaps, transporting us to different dimensions/worlds. Or perhaps throwing us back in time (as an illusion) in a way that forces us to kill our loved ones to escape (perhaps connecting Feye's death to our return to the original timeline) - ODIN'S favorite machinations. Anything besides the Brawler-like boss fight we were given. Odin has been built as this master strategist since GOD OF WAR 2018 but his boss fight was bland. ALL OTHER boss fights reflected the personality of the bosses we were fighting and THOSE ARE AWESOME! 9/10. Odin kinda makes sense given how he is talked about in the previous game. Odin in an opportunistic brute that thinks himself a mentor and teacher. He call pour on the charm, but will betray and destroy you once he had what he wants or you're no longer worthwhile. Odin has this mob boss act because we've already seen the big boistrous King of Gods act from Zeus in the OG GOW Trilogy.

    I actually loved the story mainly because of the character development, the twists were all unpredictable (main thing I hate is when I can see twists coming from a mile away movies or games ) and the combat was challenging and knowing the full story of Kratos game got me chalked up a few times especially near the end . also the PS5 performance with a 4k 120hz Vrr TV is probably the best I have played on console it runs 1440p 70-100 fps and maybe its my TVs upscaling to 4k but I didn't really notice the quality drop much from resolution mode

I really like seeing this side of Kratos compared to the older games, it a nice change seeing Kratos more soft spoken even compared to God of War but can still go full God of War when someone is threatening his son. Loved your review Joe! I don't think it would happen but I would love to see in the next game where it's just Kratos and Freyja, I would like to see where their story goes.

    I still think the first one dominated in storytelling, this one doesn't really compare especially with a lot of the more interesting story paths that just get deleted by cutscenes. They could've made this game a 10/10 if they had just followed the same play-by-play style of the 2018 version. Instead I felt this was more akin to AC Odyssey with it's lack of meaningful encounters because they wanted to give us a bunch of content. (Not complaining about a bunch of content, just could be about 25% more focused on the fact that the every realm is about to perish) It wouldve aided the story had we skipped the Thor and Odin fights to postpone them later as a duo fight because of the fact that Odin has put a bind curse on Thor's literal brain to assist him in battle until death. We could've had Thruds arc come full circle, we could've had a beautifully touching death scene with thrud/sif/Thor only for Thor to make Kratos promise to "end his madness" like we eventually accomplished. So many things could've been done to turn this into a 10 but they lacked proper focus.

      I found the storytelling to be a step down in general. I don't think there was much uniqueness to this game, either. It felt too close to 2018 in terms of settings. We went to mostly the same places, dealt with the same people, covered a lot of the same ground character-wise.
      Some of the mechanics were improved, but nothing too crazy. I still think the variety of enemies kinda sucks in terms of how we are meant to deal with them. They pretty much do the same things over and over and there's still the issue of having only a small handful of enemies going at a time so you don't get a sense of really kicking ass since you're taking on only a couple things at a time.
      It's not a bad game at all, still really enjoyable overall, but I don't really get the affinity for it.

    • @ReGo001

      This game has a ton of great moment that are unfortunately tied together with too many macguffins and elements that go absolutely nowhere and only serve to have characters either end up some place inorganically or quickly moved to a place so they can experience something they otherwise cannot where they exist at certain moments in time.
      Pacing in general is a huge issue about half way in and it never really recovers once it starts having these issues bringing all its elements together
      The big moments are all there, it’s connecting them together that they seemed to struggle with here.

    For me i loved the game, but it lacked the large set pieces and epic boss battles gow are known for. I wanted these large set piece puzzles that change the landscape to open paths. The whale island in svartelfeim is as close as it gets. Boss battles just kind of stay in one place side from the opening thor fight. It never reaches that level again. And yes i agree asgard needed to be grander. Not necessarily like the mcu but more fitting to all the legends weve been hearing from mimir.

    I did miss some of the healing mechanics the 2018 had. It's like they thought O well this is too useful, but they should have replaced it with something. I played on PS4 and if I have a boss battle in which I can only tank 3 hits til I'm dead but I don't do much damage as you mentioned I am only constantly dodging and blocking and waiting for an opportunity to get 3 hits in as many of the bosses are quite immune to stuns as well. I just feel like I'm underusing many of the abilities and skills you can unlock because they leave me way too vulnerable to damage which I can't recover. Some kind of health steal mechanic would be nice to have earlier on in the game so that aggresive playstyles become more of a thing. Defense is a good thing but it's far too present in especially some of the boss fights too really make it fun to use any of your offensive capabilities. Maybe some defensive abilities would be good to have as option.

    Thanks for a very fair review! I felt same that Spartan rage was too nerfed in 4&5. It should be a battle skipper and takes more time to fill regardless the difficulty so that we can built some strategies which battle we skip or not, especially in the hardest difficulty, as we did in GOW 1-3. At the very end of the game, Rage only works to make some invincibility frames ...(the last two hidden bosses after the story).
