STORYLINE:
Every morning, Tuscan fishermen in the Orbetello Lagoon retrieve nets left in the water to catch sea bream, sea bass and especially eels, but increasingly they are finding thousands of voracious blue crabs, an alien species that has invaded seas all over Italy, causing considerable damage to the marine ecosystem and fishing.
In recent months, perhaps favored by rising sea temperatures, these predators from the western Atlantic, which Italian fishermen call 'sea boars' because of their voracity, has increased considerably in number especially off the coast of North-East Italy, threatening the country’s role as one of the world's top clam producers.
Italy is the largest producer of clams in Europe and the third largest in the world after China and South Korea, according to U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization data from 2021, but the blue crab, a strong and fast swimmer, has put Italy's clam, mussel and oyster producers in crisis, damaging over 50% of their production.
The blue crab is not only fond of mussels and oysters. In the Laguna di Orbetello nature reserve, it is gorging on eels.
