Jaguar XK 4.2 - Could this be the best GT car you can buy for under 10K? - BEARDS n CARS

  • The Jaguar XK is a car which I have talked about at length here in Beards 'n Cars, and this 4.2 XK base model with 300 bhp is the best of them all for someone on a budget. For 10k or sometimes even less you can pick up a legitimately gorgeous 4.2 V8 GT car with a stunning design, lovely soundtrack and great driving feel as a modern day classic esque tourer.

    I’ve owned XKs for more than 12 years and currently drive an XKR convertible. Fantastic tourers, great looks, powerful and still classy. The XK is a very docile car but can be sporty if you want to. The XKR has much more power, but the fuel consumption is higher. The gearbox is very good, responsive, proper gearing, and you can go manual with the flippers behind the stearing wheel. The XK and XKR are great cars to drive, great to own and still stunning looking, a future classic, for sure!

      @@marcos1669 I have no complaints about reliability. But then again it all depends on how a car is treated. Engine; no problems, gearbox; no problems, electrical systems; no problems, apart from a new battery every now and then, suspension; no problems. But be aware that service and maintenance cost will be higher than for an average car, like a VW Golf. I have always had the services interval done at a regular Jaguar dealer.

    @sjm5482 Před 2 lety

    Great review and I agree re base versions concerning most modern makes and models, the XK particularly, given it was clearly intended as a GT and one never offered with a manual transmission. If you desire a “sports car”, skip the R version and purchase something analogue-ish that is equipped with a manual transmission so to enjoy shifting through the gears on a winding road without reaching 70 MPH in first gear (personally, my choice to fill that void was a S2 FHC E Type).
    Two years ago I purchased an 07 XK coupe BRG/Caramel, 58K miles, replacing my venerable 09 VW 2-door Rabbit as a daily driver. I do not have a work commute, but that noted, the car has been reliable, comfortable, has plenty of power, and bonus, has stunning looks - the Maserati GT is certainly flashier (not my style personally), but ridiculously priced and reliability is abominable. An Aston Martin? All models are elegant for sure, but the price of entry is too high for what you’re getting and akin to the Maserati, poor reliability. The Jaguar XK is the clear winner in the category as this video demonstrates
    A few additional comments - Gas milage is definitely very meh on the XK compared to the 5 cyl VW and the need to drink high octgas doesn’t help the pocketbook. A Trickle Charger is a must for any digitally based car using an AGM battery - all the incorporated doodads eat power like nobody’s business. Little things I did - replaced the needlessly overpriced and underwhelming original tires with All-Season Vredestein tires from Tire Rack, half the price of the original equipment with superior performance and a winter rating (I live in the Philly region, occasional snow, manageable with no commute. If, however, I had to drive consistently in bad winter weather using as a daily driver, I’d definitely secure a set of winter tires on rims given the car is RWD. Regarding experience in winter driving, I grew up in central NY where snow was on the ground from October-April, I can drive RWD in snow and am well versed re a car’s limits). I use an Indy mechanic shop for routine maintenance and don’t ignore my car’s needs, i.e., a lower control arm is bad, I replace both sides preemptively and purchase all my own parts online - parts prices vary from the same as for a VW Rabbit to eye popping. For example, a seat module can run $800 USD, that’s a lot of cash in my frugal opinion. Finally, concerning pricing, one would be hard pressed to find a well kept specimen for less than $15K USD, though there are plenty of abused, high mileage examples offered for a song and a dance (I know, I saw them in my search and was horrified - ripped head liners, torn seats, interior buttons devoid of paint, and never mind mechanical issues). Happy Motoring!

      Eric Doersch Nice one. Most surprising thing to me was how much better this 4.2 sounds than the Supercharged 2014 5.0 R. The XFR still takes the cake for me, but between XK’s I’d definitely go for this over the R

      @@HSGAutomotive I appreciate what you're saying and understand the reasons you provided in the vid, but having had my XK as long as I have, I really wish it had more power. Unfortunately, it's not simply a matter of bolting on the S/C scavenged from an R, there are so many upgrades to do that one might as well just get an R and be done with it. You're right about the XFR, it's a great sedan but there are few to be had here in the States, I suppose for that very reason. A suitable substitution would be a C63 AMG, another fine car, IMO.

    You are almost touching the roof with your head. How tall are you?

      6'3, 190cm. I own an XKR now and can confirm the space is excellent despite how it looks.

      @@rassanelasso9558 Yeah it’s better than the video would make you think. There’s a good two or three inches above my head without even reclining the seat as far as it can go. Best way to see for yourself is to drive one.

      @@HSGAutomotive you never seem to rest your neck against it. I had a Cadillac escalade with similar seats , had to buy a neck cushion. It's the neck that bothers me. Other than that,.I'm kind of sold on either the 4.2 XKR or a 5.0 N/A

    Small correction of course. I said 'X180' generation. I meant to say 'X150'. Also, you can take a peek through the catalogue of other cars which I've featured in Beards 'n Cars here: czcams.com/play/PLli-l3TTlwDO_6yAJuczuC7IDDcTr6L9m.html
