CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Demonstration on a School Bus

- Pre-Trip inspection demonstrated on a school bus. This is how you should perform your pre-trip inspection on the CDL road test. This would be after you perform the light check with the examiner.
This is based on chapter 11 of the CDL manual. We purposely did not go into excessive detail, as it would be disadvantageous to memorize unnecessary items.

I passed CDL test back in 2002. I think if I had to take the test again today I'd probably fail. The test has changed so much
It is sooo much and I am back cause I let mines lapse through the pandemic and I am beating myself up like ahhhh pray for me 🥺🥺🥺
Did you pass it?
I did the same thing when I was studying for my test !! I watched alot of pre trip and post trip vids to get used to what I had to do for the examination !! It was also helpful to take camera pics and vids from my phone to memorize all the components from left to right and front to back !! It will be two years next month I've been rolling !!! Now im in the process of upgrading my license to a class A !!!
Aaron Porter I’m thinking about upgrading mine too!
@@mallorymontenegro3924 That would be the best thing ever !!!
What is class A used for?
Frosty Locks bigger/heavier vehicles, usually tractor-trailers and tankers.
Mallory Nelson oh I see. I have decided to become a school bus driver and am starting from square one. I know nothing. I got a notebook as big as a dictionary to start taking notes. 😬😬
I watched this video (along with a few others) to get all of the key parts and phrases correct and it really helped. I passed my road skills test on Monday. It felt great to see my CDL show up in my mailbox!
Thank you!
Congratulations! 🎉
I passed my exam last Monday! San Angelo, Texas
This video was the most instrumental tool in my success! Thank you so much for posting this!
TheOriginalTxcharger rfff
did you find any videos for the parking test and RR and pick up and drop off that were good
I agree that this one is the BEST! Got my license yesterday, YAY!! Mallory, You Are Excellent! Thanks :)
Mallory did an excellent Job of clearly indicating all parts and what the examiner will be looking for. Thank you Mallory and all who made this video! God bless!
I took my CDL test yesterday (7/22/2020) in Wichita Falls and passed on my first attempt. All the sweat was happening! OY! This video was key! I essentially memorized it. The only thing I did differently was the order of the airbrakes test. Key in accessory position, wheels chocked, disengage parking brake, Static test, applied test, low pressure test, spring brake test, start engine, unchock wheels, governor cut-in/cut-out, parking brake, and then service brakes. Thank you so much for making this video!!!!
IMPORTANT NOTE: I have had some feedback from others who have gone to DPS recently that the proper procedure of performing the full pre-trip is to inspect the front, then the PASSENGER SIDE, then the back, then the driver side, and then on to the inside. In my video I go the opposite direction (which seems more logical anyway) and it hasn’t been a problem until recently with more strict guidelines from DPS. So I just want to let everyone know, I would hate for anyone to fail or lose points on account of that! Sorry for any confusion.
Mallory Montenegro I just assumed Texas does it differently than VA. I was wondering that when I watched it. Do you have to talk about the ABS light? Also we have to do a lamp check. (Outside lights). Your buses don’t have a cross over gate. It’s interesting to see the difference between States. DMV in Va will not let us put tutorials on You Tube. Other than that I thought you did a great job.
Jennifer Martin thank you! I don’t think our buses have an ABS light to check...? And our district doesn’t have the gates in front, some districts in this area do but it’s not required.
@@jennifermartin4415 Can't put tutorials on CZcams in VA? Thomas Jefferson must be turning over in his grave. But from a practical point of view, how on earth would they even enforce such a ridiculous regulation. Are you sure you've got that right?
Does anyone have the script they go based on when they're fixing to test you, because they did the same to me, they made me check all of the passenger side then the bottom, then they jumped to the inside to do the in cab, took me out to do a overall light check up and I went ahead and did the front of the bus while I was at it then the driver side, then the rear..., then they told me to do my safe star including my air brake test.., and you never guess while I didn't pass.
,and that's cause I called everything out when it came to my dashboard called out and pointed out all my gages, they didnt like the fact that when I said I would make sure they are all also functioning properly they said to be more specific , so they failed me because of that
@@mallorymontenegro3924 hey mallory I commented on one of your videos do you mind telling me what you think about my situation, it's under the school bus video
I want to Thank God n You Very Much for the video. I finally passed my pre-trip inspection, all I have to do is my driving test, parallel n back up straught. I'm just one step away!! Thank You n God Bless You from Freeport, Texas!!! ♡♡♡
Passed my road test yesterday here in NJ and your video was definitely a big part of my pre-trip training! Thanks for making such an excellent and thorough video!
Best pre-trip inspection demonstration I seen so far! Thank you!
Hi Mallory, I went in today to start my skills week of learning. The first thing my bus instructor said was watch this video. It's the best school bus inspection video on CZcams. Thank you for doing such a great job. I'll be watching this video daily until I take my road test. 🙂
Excellent, thorough and well-spoken lesson. You ought to do CDL class A lessons as well.
Great run-through! I haven't driven a school bus for a couple of years and am starting a new job next week. Needed a quick refresher and found your video. Thanks for doing such a thorough job of it! :)
Great video! I will be using your video for study material. I will watch this video over and over until it's time for me to take my driving test!!!
Thank God for this here!!! It was instrumental in my success
Thanks for the vid. Easy to follow. I will have my test eventually this summer. I'm a visual learner.
I take my test May 28th and i plan on watching this over and over to help me out
Just getting started in the process of learning to drive school bus. Class starts in April. This video is very helpful!! Getting as much info as I can.
Im going to take my driving thursday the 24th oct. Im nervous but i have studied and practiced with the bus trainer at the school. You are amazing instructor. Wish me luck. We have the same bus so its all remembering.

Thank you for making this clear video. Are checking front:back turn signals, hi/low beam, flashers and running and brake lights part of a different inspection?
I have my CDL now! Working on that with a busy schedule of band directing. This video was instrumental in passing the Pretrip! Thank you!!
Travis Peters congrats!
Good job. I am in New York and now bus drivers are supposed to be mechanics. I am glad I took the road test before these new under the hood requirements were put into effect. It is making the driver shortage here even worse as new prospects do not want to deal with all of this.
must be nice to have a/c on bus ! lol......not so lucky here in upstate NY.
Exactly, same problem here in Florida! It's funny because the same line she says over & over, I would not even know if there was a missing part!
Right?! Becomes a little sweat box. I'm just learning to be a driver now, and there is so much to remember! On top of also being the first to go through my garage with the new requirements. It's a little nerve wracking.
I’m glad I got my CDL before the new requirement as well. But, I had to learn it anyway in order to train people. I said the same thing when they changed it-all the schools are already hurting for drivers as it is. Now it’s even more difficult. The whole thing is way too excessive but what can you do? We’re just trying to roll with the punches.
George Caldes oh and by the way, we only just recently started getting air conditioned buses about 8 years ago. Before that it was pretty dang miserable-Texas heat is no joke, let me tell ya! Especially when we start school in August!
Great training video I am scheduled for B license test in two weeks.
Your video was a tremendous help, Mallory! Of the sections I passed, the pretrip was one of them!
Alfred Segovia congrats!
Thank you. I take my test in 2 weeks and am very nervous still but I’ll keep rewatching this til I get it.
Thank you for this video. I got my class C/P a few years ago (just trying to study the manual caused me to fail miserably the first time) by watching a shuttle bus video. Now I am going for my class B school bus license and watching more videos to hammer the list back into my head. Watching someone ACTUALLY do it is hands down the best way to do it. If you just read the manual, you're almost guaranteed to fail pre-trip unless you have a photographic memory.
Good luck everybody. This is very helpful . I have been a school bus driver in Ohio for 28 years. I still get nervous when doing 6 year cert. just knowing phrases is a big help. I just did one today and passed. So good luck again.
I start training in a few weeks! Thanks for this thorough inspection. You empowered me to feel I can do this.
Going for my proficiency test after 4 years on sep 11 and this is deff a great refresher! Gonna come back as needed until I feel ready
Do you sell video of this pretrip inspection
Thanks, Mallory - hope to take my test in a few weeks for School Bus.
This Pre-Trip inspection video is going to help the In-Training bus drivers to learn about checking the bus before AM and PM routes
Good video, continue with the school bus training videos, good job!
This was a good tutorial right up until the end.
The air brake test was wrong.
And
You should never start the bus and go outside it. Take the key.
Plus, never chock the front wheels! Chock the rear only.
I guess I'm a big expert with my Google diploma, lol, but only pointing out the wrong items for clarity.
I thought it was a very good instruction.
Gave it a thumbs up.
Just passed... this helped so much! Thanks!
I used your video to help me study and passed the pretrip with no problem today!!! Thanks so much!

@@diegoo.9370 thanks. Were they strict? Because the one I went to, I did it like this video, but for the front engine compartment they wanted exact verbage from the manual.
@@MrWbc0002 The guy I got was not too strict. I used mostly the verbiage on this video and it was enough to pass. He did mention I got the minimum points to pass but hey I ain’t complaining
@@diegoo.9370 thanks for your help. I’ve been memorizing Ch 11 word for word verbatim
You are awesome mallory!!!
Thank you for the rundown and detailed information.
Really enjoyed this video, just retaking my test after about 15 years away from school bus driving. One thing I think you might have got wrong is while the steeping pump is gear driven, as is the air compressor, the steering box applies the pressurised fluild
Mallory's video has helped me a lot! I feel confident that I will pass!
😍😍😍 Good job !! Love your demo. I wish all districts tested the same way tho. Some districts demand abit more thorough information on parts of busses and air brake test and behind the wheel test also 😱😱😱😱😱
Thank you! Im going for my written tests today but I know in 2 weeks I'll have to be able to do a pretrip and explain it so this was helpful!

I have a test coming in August, n I just hope I can remember everything I need to know by watching your video.. it's simple n easy just straight to point. Thanks!! I'll keep you posted if I pass it!!!
Fidela Soto please do!
The only problem is that.. I'm driving a School bus but not for the school district. It's for a construction worker. I still have to learn everything as if I'm going to take kids to school, which I'm not just "passenger"... You have a video for that?
Fidela Soto no videos for that part of the test yet, but when I get a chance I’ll work on it!
I didn't pass it because the examiner said that I didn't pass the engine start up when I know I did it. Anyway, my next text is September 17, I just pray to God I pass it...
Thank you for the video! I’m preparing for my test, and we’ve been having trouble with failures because the agents are asking specific mechanical questions during the pre-trip, such as “What is the brake chamber’s function?” and “How does the compressor charge the air system?” You may benefit from making a companion video that describes the functions of basic components, in case that info. becomes a standard part of the testing. Thanks again! This video has been extremely helpful.
That’s wild! It’s already difficult enough learning the names of all the parts! Where do you live? We haven’t run into that in our area in Texas, hopefully they won’t start doing the same. I’ll keep that in mind for future videos.
Those questions are NOT part of the test. Anything along those lines that the examiner asks is simply to rattle you. If its not in the book, it's not on the test. Remember that. Its not exactly just to be a dick (although I'm sure being a masochist is a prerequisite to being a DMV examiner lol), its to ensure that you can keep your train of thought in spite of the distraction and continue the inspection without forgetting anything. Bus drivers - especially school bus drivers - are held to higher standards than other CDL drivers due to the irreplaceable nature of our cargo. Just say "I'm not sure how it works" and move on. You can't be penalized.
I've run into that issue three times now in Florida with inspectors asking for stuff that isn't on the exam. Our other issue is that many of these inspectors are straight up assholes that don't want to pass anyone but complain at the same time that they have to drive kids every morning because we're critically short drivers. An example would be having to say the following about the front crossing mirror: "I will check to ensure the glass mirror is not cracked, broken, distorted, or have any hazing, and that it is clean. The mirror needs to be properly adjusted and properly affixed to its mount with all hardware and free of rust. The mirror's mount must not be bent, cracked, broken, or damaged, and must be properly mounted to the bus with all of its hardware and must be free of rust." And God forbid you say you'll check the other mirror the same as the first one. If you don't say all that verbiage for both you get dinged. You can't just say that you're looking for damage. You have to say cracked, bent, broken, rusted, pitted, frayed, etc... Its ridiculous.
thank you , that was really a detailed demonstration , very helpful
I loved your video! I have my road test tomorrow and your video clarified all my doubts! thanks for sharing your knowledge! I hope to pass it! you're the best! :)

thank you for posting this. I just started with Tomball ISD and so I am having to learn all this. They teach it slightly different but that is to be expected. If anything, they want you to go even more in depth than you did but makes for a better chance of passing.
pcguy that’s great! I try not to go overboard because the pre-trip already takes long enough as it is and on the test you are given a time limit. We’ve had several drivers perform the inspection exactly like I did and they passed with a perfect score.
@@mallorymontenegro3924 Well I just took my first drive and sat down in the seat where I promptly split my forehead open on the sun visor. Great way to embarass myself

pcguy good rule of thumb is you want to be able to see the other vehicle’s rear tires touching the ground in front of you. If you can’t, you’re too close.
Cheers from Archuleta School District. Love your vids.
