Lost in New York? Understand the avenues and streets of Manhattan, New York City (NYC). We'll talk about getting around the city, a guide to street signs, and how to walk around New York. Understand directions, addresses, and a little bit of New York City history.
When you’re in New York, you’ll often hear people toss around locations like 34th and 7th, or mention an address as 89 East 42nd Street. Don’t let these seemingly complicated street formulas put you in a panic. Knowing the Manhattan numeric street naming system is actually not that difficult. So let’s begin.

Also, it's just Broadway, not Broadway St. If anything, it would be an avenue anyway
Hi. I just started this channel a couple of months ago. In January, I plan to make more of these explanatory videos that break down the complexities of different NYC systems. If you find this video useful, please subscribe and stay tuned!
NYCTA retired NYC subway conductor, anything you want to know, reply
@@JoseNunez-hh1yr Thanks! I will definitely keep this in mind. 😊
@@JoseNunez-hh1yr Almost all travel videos showing how to use the subway system go way too fast. It's already second nature for native New Yorkers, but for us aging senior citizens and foreign tourists, it can be confusing. I have been to NYC three times in the last 10 years, and still experience a learning curve each time. Metro Card...can you get one card, load it with a 7 day unlimited pass AND load money on it for things that don't fall under the unlimited portion? ie. Airtrain... And how about ferries, and the tram to RI?
@@sharbymj Honestly, unless you are a Station Agent, and even that, no one understands Metrocards. MTA pockets $1.2 M/yr in leftover money. They knew what they were doing.
Just wanted to say that I love your channel so much! I'm a licensed NYC tour guide, and still always find new things from these videos and new clearer ways of replaying information. Thank you for being awesome.
Thanks so much! That means a lot. 🤗
Now I know Houston street is pronounced Houston, not Houston 🤭 excellent video!
Thank you! I was corrected first week I moved to the city. 😂
What?😂
@@roachsmoker2040 yup, I was on the subway reading the signs out loud 😂😂
Such a wonderful resource! This definitely made navigating around New York much easier. Thanks for making this!
In college I was a courier in NYC. This vid brings back memories!
That reminds me of the movie Premium Rush from 2012. I remember really liking that movie.
I am telling you, I know more about the grid of Manhattan /Layout of NYC, than I know my own neighborhood. Your explanations are so seamless and the animations look so neat ! I cant stop at one video...and i am not even from around NYC or anywhere near USA or have any purpose to be there ! But this is so informative. It really helps me to just transport myself there...like the street view in google maps !
P.s I immediately opened google earth and saw all the location/streets you mentioned !
Thanks for sharing! I'm glad that you are enjoying the videos even though you are not in NYC.
Can’t be more thankful for your Avenue and street explaining, it’s such a help to us , being from not the US!
My pleasure! Glad to help out. 😊
Outstanding information. Superb graphics with excellent narration/voiceover. This content should be required viewing for all tourists visiting NYC.
Thank you! That's really nice of you to say.
Your videos are so helpful! Thank you so much.
loved this! i remember years ago wishing there was an explainer like this and here it is finally!
Thank you! I made this cause I thought the same thing.
Very Clear ! Thanks ! Please make more of such videos.
Thank you so much! Yes, I plan on making more of these once the holidays are over. ☺️
Wow! I didn't know half that stuff. Especially on the north side of Manhattan. Thanks for explaining all the details of the street. Big thumbs up 😎👍
Thank you so much!!! Still a bit complicated to me but super helpful!!!
This was the best video explanation I found on this, thank you so much
Thanks for watching!
It'd be really cool to see a video on The Bronx's street grid because its kinda confusing; like the streets sorta follow the Manhattan grid pattern but its a more sporadic and the avenues appear to be placed at almost random intervals
Very informative! Thank u so much!
Simply awesome mapwork superrrrrrr
Thanks for sharing...Very Informative.......Really Enjoyed to learn.....:)
Im bringing my daughter to the city in December. Thank you for your content.
December is such a festive time. Have fun and dress warm!
Wow great plant, good job my friend 👍👍
Thank you!
Thanks for the video great explanation!!!
You're welcome! Thank you for watching.
Great explaination! I miss NYC
Thank you! I miss it too (so much is still shut down).
Great
Very informative
Thank you!
Please make more of such videos.....very Informative/...:)
My home town Sapporo is similar to this. We say North/South before East/West, and there’s also a 0 for both.
Our Houston (house-ton) Street runs east-and-west and is called Ōdōri (literally “the large street”), and our numeric standard is “North/South [number] East/West [number]”, with “Ōdōri” replacing North/South = 0 and “Chūō” (center) replacing East/West = 0.
For example, the center of Sapporo station is at Kita 6-jō Nishi 3-chōme (North 6 West 3).
thank you beautiful!
very helpful ur video
Hello Thea, this is a nice video u made. I know the street grid like a pro and I didn’t watch a video to explain it,but I had to see your video right now,I watched part I of your video, but now I’m watching part II, in part I,you discussed that Manhattan has Avenues, that run from north to south, and Streets that run east to west,my favorite Cross-Street is 34th Street followed along with my favorite Subway Station,34th Street-Herald Square. My mom and I pass that station on the F train every time, that’s all I have to say. I’m going to become a bus driver soon, thank you,Thea,I subscribed to your channel 2 weeks ago,I’m commenting as your subscriber,I hope you reply to my comment,Thanks,Urban Caffeine
Hi! Thanks for watching! Just curious, why is 34th your favorite station? Also, good luck on being a driver! I'm sure you'll know the grid like the back of your hand in no time.
This really awsome. But there/s no way I'gonna remmeber this by heart when I'm there. Is there an app to help?
On the upper west side, 12th Ave is Riverside DRIVE. Riverside BOULEVARD runs only from 59th to 72nd.
Oops, that's right! Thanks for pointing it out. I'm actually going to make a video on the Upper West Side later on. This will be useful to note.
This is so cool! What animation software do you use to make and animate the maps/ symbols/ etc?
Thanks! I used Adobe Illustrator for the graphics then put it all together in Premiere.
Thank you Kiddo
You bet! Thanks for watching. 😀
„it’s not that complicated“😂
Such a big surrounds
very good video. Subbed
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Hello! Just subscribed, saw your layout vid. Good AV use. Just posted to Brighttrip about the urban legend: The Manhattan Street Key. Need to find 1234 Madison Ave? Drop the 4(123), divide by 2(62), the key says add 23(+62=85) 1234 Mad is between 85th and 86th st. Used to be in every NYC phone book for ages. It's a north-South thing, seeing that east- west is mostly covered by the old timey system of 100,200,300, etc. from the middle, whatever it may be.
Thanks for subscribing and thanks for the tip! I remember seeing something like this on a tour guide map something around 15 years ago. lol. I can see why they stopped sharing this, but it's still pretty neat.
Thanks for your reply. I have good news for you. I found my copy of the Manhattan street key. Being a little behind on tech, how can I send a jpg or pic to you to use?
Nice, thanks! My email is in the About section on my channel page.

You are genius

Thanks for the info !!!! Being from Houston , Texas I wouldn't want to sound like a dork telling a cabbie where to find Katz's. As if he wouldn't already know . right ?
Hi there! Yeah, I'm sure cabbies get that a lot. Thank you for watching my videos!
@@UrbanCaffeine I really enjoyed your videos and I subscribed the first time I watched one .you give very timely info . info that people really need to navigate around N Y C without a lot of the clutter and b. s. some of the others give out . they always sound like they are more interested inbtrying to impress you with what a hip New Yorker they are and really don't care if you find their info relevant or not . yours however are really good and informative . Would you do one on where to eat without mentioning " bodegas " ( like I said , I grew up in Texas , and I've had " bodegas " up to here in my life .) where to get a decent hotdog on the street without puking allnight , ect . thanks kiddo !!!!
Thank you so much for subscribing! I try to make videos that I wish I had watched when I first moved to NYC. I would love to do one on places to eat. Right now though, the restaurant situation keeps changing almost every week. As soon as things normalize, it's a video I'd like to do.
@@UrbanCaffeine I get it !! When this crazy stuff is over , become an official N Y C tourist guide ! From what I can see from checking out other " guides " last year , it pays reasonably well and you can set your own hours . just a thought .
If a house is located in the 5th block west side of 5th avenue on 42nd street, then what's the number of it? 500 W 42nd st?!
Are the Avenues typically 2 way traffic or are they one way alternating like the streets?
Off the top of my head, they alternate but Park Ave is 2-way.
I was going to correct her pronunciation of hAWstin, but was then immediately corrected by her.
Cool, but still confusing, you say Av run from north to south, streets run from east to west. The same you say in the video about Queens Street grid, but actually it’s the opposite there…🧐
Driving in Manhattan has significantly changed post 911. For example east west crossing from 1st to 12th Avenues are now only possible at the major thoroughfare i.e. 14th street, 34th street.
Can you please elaborate? You mean there is no way to drive through a street? I never drove when I lived in NYC so never paid attention.
@@Edmond347 prior to 911 every other street below 59th you could drive river to river East to the Hudson. However starting in 2002 the streets were rerouted and emergency lanes were added.
@@jamesstephens9702 Thanks. What do you mean when you say “rerouted”? Trying to picture this.
@@Edmond347 for example you are driving west bound for two blocks, next street over the traffic heading east bound.
@@jamesstephens9702 I see. I’ll be there in a few weeks so will check it out. Thanks.
3:57 oh hey you said my moms job 11 W 42 St
I ❤ U urbancaffeine 😅
I think you meant to say Columbus Avenue not Columbus circle. Columbus circle is,, like the name says, a circle not a street.
Sorry....but there's wrong info....It's Riverside Dr not Riverside BLVD and it's Columbus ave not Columbus circle (as the replacement name for 9th)
Hi there! Thanks. I think someone else commented about this already. I did another video for Upper West Side where the avenues are correct.
can we say 89 East 42 Street is 1st block east 5th Avenue 42 strret
Hi there. Not all the blocks are the same sizes and have the same numbering. The only thing consistent is that 5th avenue is the divider between east and west. So if an address has an "East" on it, at least you know it's going to be on the east side of 5th Ave.
what does 89 mean here?
Hi urban Caffeine
Broadway is a stand alone name.
Doesn't have ST attached to it.
Thanks! I actually just realized this mistake too cause I was putting together a video for Upper West Side. It's posting on Monday if you're interested.
@@UrbanCaffeine if it shows up in the feed, more than likely we'll see it 👍🏾
William houstoun.....they forgot the U and still pronounce it the way his name is pronounced.
I always tell people, take the money you'd blow on a NYC trip and spend 1/5 of that enjoying a smaller town that could probably use the money more. Enough NY videos on YT to satisfy!
Broadway STEEET????!!!
Columbus Circle is just a circle. It doesn't continue.
Jesus this was hard to understand
this is confusing
lmao
The streets in the shity are designed now to make driving as miserable as possible. All these “improvements “ have nothing to do with safety. 5 lane streets melted into 1. Lanes taken away for pedestrian space. Then super sized flower pots are out there so now even pedestrians can’t use the lane. So what does that have to do with safety?! Just taking lanes away to make driving as miserable as possible.
