75-76 had three sliders for the heater controls, one slider to run the fan speed. 79 cars had the square cyclops clusters, square hole for a round cluster. 1980 mk1 jetta had the best dash of all the cars, IMO. The early bow type headliners will swap into the later cars, the holes are there in the roof for the bows to notch into. 81 was the swap over for the US ATO fuse boxes. The later fuse panels are rebuildable, you can pull the wires out of the back and put on new terminals, and snap them back in.
Glad to see somebody is taking an interest in these cars. I had a 1980 Scirocco and it was one of the best cars I ever owned. I loved how easy it was to work on and the engineering was solid. Enjoy your Rabbit's brotha!
I own a 1982 Rabbit Pickup I bought in in 1990 the first modifications I did was the put power steering from a 1986 Rabbit Cabriolet the rack and pump all the bracket fit with slight modifications along with the center console it is my daily driver and I sill love it!
Great explanation of the differences in model years. I appreciate the info. I have an 81 rabbit with the correct front end. lol I'm planning on filming a lot of the work I do to it. I've been into these early rabbits for a long time, but this is the first time I came across a video like this explaining things so well. Appreciate the video!
Interesting to see how different these cars are in europe. Cause like every mk1 golf has round headlights. Different bumpers. The 80s models have different back lights. Early models are almost identical to models from europe. But the late models from 80s are like 2 different cars even from inside cars compared to cars from europe.
I skipped most lectures and cheated my way through university. I wish this guy were a professor of Wagenology. I would have gone to every class. I LOVE MY RABBIT CADDY
I was working for VW when the Rabbits came out. Lots of carburetor problems, and i remember a recall called Campaign DO where the carbs got redone. There were camshaft problems, and god they did rot.
waiting4aliens wow that’s awesome to hear from someone who was working for them back then. i’ve heard of a few things like that, random recalls and such. the carb thing you mentioned explains why they were phased out so quickly!
As a belgian i must say golf mk1 ,2 and 3's like the corollas from america. Verry reliable and simple. I own a 1982 vw golf mk1 1.6l diesel. And it drivers great. Payed 2200 for it and the car hasn't rust.
Interesting to see the differences between these and the Golf that I'm more familiar with here in the UK. The dashboard of the 80s models in particular is completely different.
Matthew Ferrin well then you’ll be glad to hear i finally got it running properly yesterday which means i can actually give a proper opinion on it haha. should have that up by next week.
I have always owned air cooled VWs. I recently picked up a 1982 Quantum coupe. Interesting car, it’s a challenge to find any trim parts. The early and early ish water cooled VWs have nowhere near the following of the air cooled cars. But it’s a fun project nonetheless.
Michael Converse that’s awesome congrats! i had a quantum syncro wagon with the 10v 5 cylinder for way too short of period. was rear ended 2 months into getting it on the road. definitely tricky getting parts but it was such a cool car. which motor do you have?
79 gas cars were square 79 diesel cars were round when the rabbit manufacturing moved to PA they weren’t ready to make diesels so they were built in germany until 80.... at least i think so haha
I got a 79 round eye , I should dig out the VIN because getting parts once I needed it and the counter guy replied :aah, one of the last of the roundeyes. She's a semi crispy critter that is way too gone to make mint, just fix what structural rust it had and run it.
Just wondering why it's not ok to have round headlights on a later Rabbit. Is it a purist thing? Is a VR6 in a Rabbit ok, but not the headlights? ABA and R1 carbs are ok?
Patrick Todd honestly at the end of the day it’s all personal preference which headlights you put on your rabbit. but i think i went more into detail why round swaps are generally frowned upon in a later video. in short, that front panel is a major structural point and most of the time the front end swap isn’t done right. it’s not cut off and welded on anywhere near as properly as it should be. i’ve seen far more half assed front end swaps than i have ones that are done right.
I have the 1979 US spec RABBIT LS ,very hard to find in Europe, short tail lights, the front end is with no corner light next to the headlights, have the big sidemarkers on sides,is it or not the swalow tail? You can see it on my channel and please let me know if it is German made for US or Mexic? In the paperwork is 1979,thank you!
really depends on how badly you want is VS how readily available they are in your area. i’ve seen clean well taken care of ones sit for months at a time unable to fetch 2k here in the northeast. whats an acceptable amount of rust? in my honest opinion you’re bearing the price point where it should be fairly rust free.
Seth Luke ahhhhhh! alright sweet thanks. i figured they had to be mk1 because of the back seat but you never know. i’ve barely looked at that car since i got it let alone put my hands on it.
when i saw the beef patty i was guessing that you are from new york, but when i saw the ny plates i laughed. I have a 84 gti with round headlights. i swapped them because i thought it was cooler. =*(
hahaha that's too funny , we actually have one of the big store bought beef patty producers not far from here and obviously endless deli's and Caribbean spots that have them. man, you got me craving a beef patty again. all that matters at the end of the day is that your car is built and styled to your liking. the main take away for everyone from the round swap hate should be just to make sure the conversion is done safe and properly so that 1) you don't compromise the cars rigidity/structural integrity and 2) ensure the car doesnt see an untimely death due to rot from improper welds/repaint.

You the man, you a beast, you a legend bro! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Learning a lot from these videos! I’m about to buy an 81 four door diesel and I’m super excited!
As always dude I enjoyed the tutorial and learned a lot more then I can in with. Keep it up!!
My Mom worked at VW Westmoreland.
Eyyyy great job man. Thank you for your videos
Great video Brother, very informative! 😎

Great info. Just getting into this. Very very helpful!
Austin great to hear and thank you for the support!
For the later cars you are correct, the AC cars had the vents, the non AC cars had a pocket for storage
awesome thanks for clarifying/confirming!
Great vids thank you! My fx-16 got boosted and thinking about swapping teams

Yo ur the best for vw
I have a 1975 in Norway. 😊💞
Best thing is seatbelts connected to door so you never forget to buckle up!
Thanks for the difference facts...

What is frightening about the rabbit chassis is that it can have severe rot at the seams that is hidden by a pristine outer layer.

what of this video applys to a 1984 vw jetta mk1 diesel
Looking forward to explanation of aba with jh head swap

Most excellent history.
Triffst Du im Walde einen Wolf-
Steige nicht aus Deinem Golf.
(Early VW commercial) 😊
79 gas cars were square
79 diesel cars were round

at least i think so haha
Luke Almquist i knew it was something odd like that, but couldn’t recall so just left it open. thanks for the clarification!

I have a ‘79 Diesel. Made in (West) Germany. Round headlights, small bumpers, euro dash with A/C. Knee bar. Never seen one like it.
I’ve got 78 1.5 diesel 4 speed manual. I’m 3rd owner 140k on clock I have all receipts for everything.

@@mk1rabbithole Thank you. Just wondering. I can understand the hack jobs and safety aspect.

Eddie Michael it does not appear to be swallowtail especially if it’s a 79. what headlights did the car come with? round or square?
That is the correct bumper
Is 1800 dollars for an 82 Rabbit convertible a decent price with good condition factory paint, running, and an a acceptable amount of rust? Worth it?

Yurp as some people mentioned only difference was the diesel continued to have round lights and small tails, because they were made in germany
those seats in your blue car are from an early westy

Did any of the diesels have A/c?
waiting4aliens not sure 🤔
Lots did.
But it makes them extremely slow and the ac is not very good.
Best bet go electric or hot rod aftermarket under dash unit
My ‘79 diesel has AC, as did my ‘81 Caddy
What about the diesel rabbit
what about em?
@@mk1rabbithole how are the motors and trans in them
can you not eat when you film a video?
albert krauss until you’re gonna pay me or sponsor my videos, i will continue to film them any which way i want.
Going for the 1983 euro gti look on my 1983 us spec gti... euro tails, round headlights, gti dash... Etc
Don’t eat and talk it’s gross
