  • “Pioneer Girl: The Revised Texts” was written by Laura Ingalls Wilder and annotated by Nancy Tystad Koupal. Wilder completed her autobiography, “Pioneer Girl,” in 1930, when she was 63 years old. She turned over her manuscript to her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, already a well-known reporter and writer, who sent the manuscript to her agent, Carl Brandt of the Brandt & Brandt literary agency in New York City. The manuscript was not published, and Wilder and Lane continued to revise it. The manuscript later became the basis for the “Little House” books for young readers.
Wilder and Lane’s working relationship is explored in this book about the writing and legacy of Wilder. It represents the first stages in the evolution of Wilder’s story from memoir to the ‘Little House’ books.
Tystad Koupal is from Pierre and is the director and editor-in-chief of the Pioneer Girl Project. “Pioneer Girl: The Revised Texts” is sold at the Heritage Stores. www.sdhsf.org

We are pleased to report that Pioneer Girl: The Path into Fiction is almost finished. This fourth book from the Pioneer Girl Project concentrates on the writing and editing of Wilder’s first novel, Little House in the Big Woods (1932). If all goes well, it will be released in the late spring/early summer of 2023. Learn more about the Pioneer Girl Project and books. pioneergirlproject.org

I'm curious to know if any of these books will end up as ebooks? Or in Large Print?

What is the difference between Pioneer girl Annotated Autobiography and Pioneer girl revised edition? Which is better?

Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography is a typed out version of Wilder’s original 1930 “Pioneer Girl” manuscript, with lots of annotations. Pioneer Girl: The Revised Texts is three different versions of that original text, created by Wilder’s daughter Rose Wilder Lane as she tried rather desperately to sell the manuscript to a New York publisher in 1930. Lane “ran it through her typewriter” three times. The book has the three versions lined up side by side, so that the reader can see what Lane deleted and altered. There is a fourth column of annotations, which follow up on what happened to the deleted parts. Wilder ended up putting most of them back in. The next volume, Pioneer Girl: The Path into Fiction (to be released on May 30, 2023) focuses on a short children’s story that Lane pulled from the “Pioneer Girl” manuscript and tried to sell to New York publishers. This one met with success and became Little House in the Big Woods.
