The World Would Fall Apart Without Him: Hermes

- Alright, folks... Greek Mythology time. Let's talk about Hermes. You know... speedster, sandals with wings on them... that's probably all you know. And that's where I come in. I fill in the blanks on Hermes' troubling tendencies, on his childhood, on the father that abandoned him (Zeus), on his love life... I mean if you watched a Briefed video before, you already know: I'm the Greek God paparazzi. It's funny, because when I started scripting this video, I was like "Oh, Hermes... that's not gonna be a long one. That's easy." Boy, oh boy, was I ever wrong. Hermes is basically THE glue that holds Greek Mythology together. Honestly, Papa Zeus (literally Hermes' dad) would be lost without the guy, so it's only right that I dedicate another episode to the beautiful speedster god:
Episode 10 Of Keeping Up With The Greek Gods - Hermes
Notes:
Ok look... we're talking about a guy that conquered half the known world in his day. There is so much more to Alexander the Great than I could hope to cover in a 40 minute video. Notable things I skipped was Alexander's first battle with Darius the Third, his visit to Jerusalem, and some bits of correspondence between him and the Persian King. I also vastly shortened the Egypt campaign and the Indian campaign, but I do think the story works as a whole and gives you very solid idea of who Alexander the Great was.
Get All My Artwork & Support The Channel:
I get a lot of questions about my artwork and where it’s from or rather who draws it. Well the answer is that I create it - I don’t draw it. I use AI to create the artwork, using specific prompts, specific style influences from 18th and 19th century artists, and I spend about 10 hours per video just on the artwork. Each video has roughly double the artwork of what you actually see in the video, so a lot of it is unused. The good news here though is that you can get all that artwork on my Patreon - the artwork I do use, and the artwork I don’t use. Plus, by subscribing to my Patreon you are making a major contribution to Briefed and helping me to keep this channel going, because this is my full time job and the survival of the channel and quality of the videos greatly depends on said support. In return for supporting, you get more than the artwork though - you also get exclusive videos and producer credit, as well as access to a producer group that gets to vote on thumbnails, gets behind the scenes etc.
If you choose to become a Patron - thank you. I do not take it for granted.

Hold up…
PAAAAUUUSSSEEEEE
Wait what!?!?!
Medusa-as-victim was ENTIRELY an invention of Ovid. In the Greek sources she was never anything but a monster.
I would like to see proof of that, cuz thats very important info
Yes it's in the original stories. Poseidon fell in love with her as the gorgon...he loved the snakes in her hair and thought she was the most beautiful thing ever.
Treasury of Greek Mythology by Donna Jo Napoli.
Or Google it, you'll find the original story if you put it in the search bar.
@@felipecouto1102 It may not have been specifically "an invention of Ovid", likely he did use older stories he heard in when he wrote his Metamorphoses. Still, Ovid is the oldest account we have of this Medusa's backstory and he lived, somewhere around late first century BC, early first century AD.
Earlier versions (such as a mention in Hesoid's theogony in 7th century BC) simply leave it at her being a daughter of Porcys and Ceto, two primordial sea deities also responsible for birthing a bunch of other monsters such as the Echnida, Scylla and the Sirens.
Also, originally, the whole Medusa story is most likely a simple volcano myth: an evil entity living on some mountain, that can literally turn you to stone (as a volcano might if it catches you in it's ashes). Strings of lava would flow from that mountain, reminiscent of hair, and they'd make loud hissing noises, making them seem snake-like.
And then there's the weird detail the video didn't even bother mentioning, but when she's decapitated (ie, when a volcano's peak explodes), two things spring from her neck: one is a golden sword (a possible lava fountain), and the other was the winged horse Pegasus (this one is a bit more confusing. Could be a reference to an ash cloud with a volcanic storm, so full of lighting. Some speculation Pegasus may be connected linguistically to a Luwian - Hetite storm god Pihaššašši. Also, the ash cloud could have just randomly resembled a horse at the time)
Finally, there's the little detail where a bunch of early depictions of medusa on ceramics actually show her with a cauldron with snake shaped handles for a head. Which might suggest something hot brewing in there.
@SirConto Some stories say Golden man. And they name him Chrysoar. Just saying.
Glad to see a narration of Medusa’s story that gives her a little empathy. Great video!
I think a lot more ppl are learning Medusa's real backstory. Unfortunately, thats why a lot of young women get Medusa tattoos😢
I really appreciate what Medusa ended up symbolizing for women in the past and present. I’ve seen a lot of discourse recently mostly from men not seeing the value in this version of her story since its not the original so I’m beyond pleased to see this narration as well as the guys in the comments also seeing value and appreciating this version.
Hell yeah. This channel is so awesome. You have a gift for telling these stories in the most efficient way possible. Production value is top notch. This channel is going to blow up with subs. Love the artwork, the hdr, and the humor too! I have no nitpicks whatsoever. Keep going buddy! I am sharing your videos with my family and friends too.
thank you, thank you for these beautiful words. means a lot.
I love this channel but idk if you can call using almost exclusively AI generated art"high production value" anyone can do it in 5mins but like I said I really do love this channel and there's nothing wrong with using AI art. It's very efficient!👍
That “beef” line was clean. I did the DiCaprio, pointing at the screen meme! Bars!!! No cap I love your channel. You remind me of my brother. Working on some clothes focused around the pantheon of many different cultures. Your videos inspire. Would love to send you some merchandise when we’re done. Peace and love.
thank you man, thank you. the DiCaprio thing made me laugh haha. yh send me an email about the merch when ready briefed@mediacrax.com
@@Briefed_Mythology I absolutely will. Would love to share ideas with you brother. Looking forward to the next video.
I’M LITERALLY OBSESSED WITH YOUR VIDEOS, HUMOR, NARRATIVE STYLE, TOPICS AND VOICE, LIKE I DISCOVERED YOUR CHANNEL 3 DAYS AGO AND BEEN BINGEWATCHING THE ENTIRE SET, YOU’RE AMAZING LOVE YA
thank you, thank you, thank you. such kind words. and the all caps makes me feel them even more haha
You are quickly becoming my new favorite mythology channel
awww thanks, thanks Tia. that makes me happy to hear
Stumbled on your channel a few days ago, watched all the videos and I enjoy your narrative style... the jokes make otherwise dark stories lighthearted and memorable... I'm never forgetting when you first called Zeus "Sparky" and Poseidon "Aquaman"
I really enjoyed the Napoleon story too, it was cinematic... all your videos are cinematic... from the art, to your voicing, the texts, and the background music... superb work
thank you for the flowers. wow that comment makes me very happy and makes me feel appreciated. thanks 🥹
Your dog is sooooo cute!! I love how expressive his eyes are. ❤ he is so sweet pupper
Tell that PAN story at BAND CAMP!! LOL
GOAT Story teller. I’d watch planet earth if you narrated it
Cool flute story: "This one time, at band camp..."
Briefed: *explaining his obvious puns*
Dog:"I guess it's one of those videos again."
my dog is done with me explaining my dad jokes to him. too bad, he shall keep suffering through it
@@Briefed_Mythology 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 fricking hilarious! Nah bro just hope you don't take it offensive, please. Apologies for not remembering his name 🤣
Dude your channel is awesome it’s gonna blow up enough to attract the attention of Zeus for sure. Let’s just hope he doesn’t think you cute.
bro I get a lot of funny comment, but I hardly ever laugh out loud. this one made me laugh out loud hahaha
@@Briefed_Mythology lol hell yeah the mouth is finally paying off and not in the way I always worried about in my nightmares
In the original story Medusa was never a mortal, she was actually worshipping in what is modern day Turkey.
Rest in peace Medusa you deserve better 😢😢
Someone should have given Hermes and Zeus a Snickers 😂
Checking this channel everyday like the morning newspaper, your love for what you do really shines through your content ‼️ keep up the good work
thank you 😊🥹
So I think it's really ironic that nobody wanted to worship Hades because they feared him even though he was literally the god of wealth but greedy people would pray and worship Hermes so they could be cunning. It always sounds really good in my head and then I can never put it into words but I hope you kind of understand where I was going with that
hmmmmm..... now that you mentioned it. never thought about it this way, and... it absolutely makes sense
Also, of all the Greek gods, Hades was, by far, the least vengeful, hateful, violent and nefarious. Except for the whole Persephone thing, there aren't many stories about Hades doing dirty deeds.
Love to see another briefed video 😌 been watching these past few days
Oh my God I was looking forward to this video soooo much! Thank you for your exceptional narration as always.
Man, you had me in tears with your interpretation of Hermes and Shaggy. Keep up the good work.
Love this channel ❤️
I hardly ever comment on CZcams videos, but your content is outstanding. Your casual style, I believe, masks diligent, extensive research and genuine love for the subject matter. Further, your modern references and vernacular, not to say sensitivity and nuance, makes stories from the the deep past so relatable and accessible. And that's the really important bit. The dreams, dilemas, triumphs, failures and shortcomings of heroes, real or mythical, are relevant to all of us in our daily lives, no matter how humble or ordinary we may believe ourselves to be. What more can I say? Just... keep going.
what a beautiful comment. thank you nick. comments like these motivate me more than people know - so truly, thanks.
The dog's reactions are priceless.. He's like just get on with the story please
he's so done with my crap haha
honestly this guy's face looks like a mythology god.
My favorite CZcams channel rn! Hha this guy rules. Need his autograph.

Dude are you ex forces cause your sense of humour says infantry😂 either way I love your vids man.
The beef bar 😂🔥🔥🔥
Your presentations are so good, I'm surprised that you haven't been offered a major media contract of some sort. Your takes on history are very personalizing and informative at the same time. Keep it up 👍 THX. ✌️
thank you John 😊🥹 and thank you for watching and supporting
This is my top 3 channel on CZcams. Been watching since TikTok
Hermes as the Messenger God is actually the lord of the internet, as it is just a communications tool. In fact one might argue that as the god of communications he is the key god of the entire information age.
Excellent video!
man i just wanna say that i approve your videos really much, they’re really enjoyable and funny AND you incorporate so much information ❤️❤️
thank you Philip 😊
Beautiful art and music!
Thank you for this.
thank you for watching
i swear to god in my life i never commented for any other youtuber but u make my day man. Tnx man keep it up. wagwan
ah man thanks. that genuinely means a lot. really, really appreciate that brother. hope you keep watching 🫡
The difference between watching your videos versus other platforms, with Briefed I'm required to do so providing full uninterrupted attention.
Why?
Your intros are compelling, drawing us all into a story enriched with exemplary visuals and audio, delving us further and further into a blissful abyss.
Your videos are an experience - like summarized versions of one's cherished audio books.
I'm not sure if this is what you were going for, but you've succeeded.
man that comment made me super happy and super super proud haha thanks Jon. comments like this are really motivating. I really appreciate your kind words and the support
Favorite mythology channel
thank you 🥹
❤ these videos!
The “Regulators” reference too!! You’re a beast!! 😂
I love this channel
Athena was a goddess of wisdom, which i dont think really helps the case when it came to Medusa
Merry Christmas sir always love your mythology content hahaha see you next week thank you as always ⛄⛄⛄
merry Christmas Arnie ❤️
4:48 Lol. The 48 ox that buddy stole 😂😂😂😂
5:04 was in the middle of writing how i got this clever pun and then you explained it 😂😂😂

I always look forward to watching your videos every week, they reignite my love of mythology. I love supporting you on this platform and on Patreon. I am excited to see what the new year holds for this channel and Patreon as well 😊 One thing your artwork for more of your recent content for both CZcams and Patreon is not available. I can imagine that it is a lot of work to manage especially with each platform, so no rush but I just wanted to let you know just in case.

Great videos, great art, great story telling! Can you make a video about Atlas?
atlas will feature heavily in some upcoming greek mythology videos 🫡
The random Warren G lines made me giggle
I love the video. I was wondering if you can do a video on Loki. Loki is one my fave Norse Gods.
He has it on the channel
not hermes being all shaggy it-wasn't-me-ing it at apollo tho "and also abandon his mother in her cave alone..." 😂😂😂
American Dream line - ouch
Yes. It also describes just about EVERY civilization, tribe, nation, and people there's ever been...🤔
America may have done some bad things (like every nation on earth has) but we have also done more good things for the world than any nation in history. I honestly am debating about unsubscribing from this channel following that comment. I like your videos, but that was uncalled for.
Warren G got me. Good vid!
Funnily Enough, in the original greek myth, medusa was not a priestess of Athena, but a monstrosity since birth. She and her two sisters were gorgons. It was Ovid that wrote the victim of the sea god version because basically he wanted to stick it to authority. Love the videos, btw, my dude
I named my first rabbit Hermie after Hermes. I thought it was the perfect name considering.
that is legit a perfect name for a rabbit
Dude. A lot of things have been taken from us or maybe shared with us.
Like zeus and indra are similar.
Haphaestus and vishwakarma .
Hades and Yamraj.
Moreover, its just facinating to see a lot of cultures having similarities.
Watched this video with my girl and all she took from it was your voice 😂❤. Anyways, can't wait for the next vid ❤
aww bless I love that you're watching the video together 🥹❤️
Happy Holidays All 🎉🎉🎄🎄🎅🏾🎅🏾🎅🏾 thanks you Briefed for this beautiful present ❤️❤️
Ummm… i wanted to ask. Is it possible if maybe one day you’ll ever cover Prometheus?? 👀
hello, hello happy holidays to you too 😊❤️ yes, in fact the video next Saturday will be Julius Caesar, and then it's Prometheus after that 😊
YES!!! MY FAVOURITE GREEK GOD!!! SO UNDERRATED
Bro I can't wait for your video on Odysseus. I would think you're gonna do one on Achilles too, yea?
yup, the plan roughly is - argonauts, achilles, trojan war, odyssey... unless I'm forgetting something right now
I got the beef pun the first time. Much appreciated.
I was just gonna ask u to do an Odysseus video right when u said that. 👊
Hermes is like our Loki (we still say “leugen” -lögen- for a lie) This episode is hilarious! Thanks
Hail Hermes 💖
One of my favourite writtings about hermes comes from Lucius' dialogue of the gods where hes just complaining to his mother Maia how hard his life is.
15:17 Literaly 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@Briefed_Mythology Never knew Odysseus was related to Hermes!
People say Hermes was the messenger of the gods, but he was the herald of Zeus. Hermes was so badass that he would go alone into enemy camps and talk using Zeus' authority to threaten or negotiate.
When are you going to do julias Caesar? Also it would be cool if you did Gilgamesh too
caesar is next Saturday, so the next video basically. Gilgamesh is planned, but I don't know when exactly yet
Love the video. But one question is the dog also on camera. I'm blind so I don't know.
I Love the videos, just wanted to add a perspective, that Athena May have "cursed" Medusa, to protect her. Since even Gods and Titans were susceptible to her accursed glare..
though there are many ancient versions to medusas tale, that version really I just a modern - very modern - take that unfortunately doesn't make sense, since it completely ignores the fact that Athena then literally helps perseus kill medusa 🥹
You should do one about atlas, Anubis, or ratatoskr
anubis video is definitely incoming 😊
Ah j’ai ri, merci 🙏
Thank you for the puns
So what happened to his mother?
she's still about that cave life
Best channel 🪽🐄
thanks artemis 🫡 also did you watch my artemis video yet
@@Briefed_Mythology Of course, savage but fair 🏹 😅
Who's the better trickers
Hermes or loki
Oh shit another one ☝🏾!
Can you do African/Caribbean mythologies
soon 🫡
Eill you also make videos about the Anunaki?
7 or 8 videos now in one day 😂😂
haha I love it. sounds like a good way to spend a Sunday to me
Could you do one on Orpheus and Eurydice?
Absolutely planned. it's still ways away, but it's penciled into my schedule already
25:01 Got it ! ... 😊👍
hi uncle handsome. again!!!
Hermes, the god of merchants but also the god of thieves... Oh my!
Shit like this makes Me appreciate what Kratos did to the Greek pantheon even more.
I am into anime, and the animated clips you show is interesting. What is the name of it?
that is blood of zeus - it's on Netflix and the second season is releasing in may
Rolls eyes
Ever since Apollo and hermes became not only bffs but bbfs as well (best Brothers forever) which is whe even to this day mercury is the closest planet to the sun.
Hermes had the gift of gab
Playing holes 😭😭😭
You should cover the ancient Egyptian, Celtic, Greek and Norse crossover series with Thoth, Loki lugha and Hermes oh and maybe add ancient Sumerian in there and the book of genesis based after the events of ragnarok from lokis perspective bla blah blah, think you might be interested in that
Bro. The first guy you showed isn't even Hermes. Its Zeus.
Hermes will always remind me of the og god of war games lol
The look on your dogs face was rich.
the true star
