yes sir! I was massive Rodney Mullen fan. I'm an engineer now all grown up, but saw him at a coffee shop between meetings once...typically I stay stoic and professional but that went out the window when I saw Mullen. No one knew who he was sadly. I miss 2000

Im glad to be born in 89. Started skating in 99. The golden era of demos and skating. Indoor skateparks everywhere. The skate cutlure wasnt about hucking tricks it was about being with friends and spot hunting, having fun. I miss it.

All the cool things I've done have been in something that will rip when you catch it on barbed wire, has no space for tools or smokes, needs to be washed at special settings, is too tight to allow freedom of movement in any situation other than brunch, and costs twice as much as cargo shorts. My cool shorts are soft, delicate, pantone purple shorts that are cut above the knee and have one very subtle pocket. My man puts his hand in the pocket to show people he's mine.

The first Tony hawk game was getting close to being shipped out at this point and tony called the devs not long after this and asked the devs if it was possible to put the 900 as another of his special moves and the devs replied don't worry we already on top of it.

Apparantly some were a bit pissed off that he was allowed to do this though. Each skater has a set time to achieve their Trick and Tony Hawk got given extra to do his then won the prize because of it.

The hype around this trick and the late 90's revival of skateboarding sparked entire industries of clothing to video games and in part helped fund todays "street fashion"

Started in late 70s and then the first 'commercial'/'competitive wave was in the 80s and then went back to a really underground status in the early 90s. Then around mid/late 90s became big again, all the way up to what it is now. You should check out the documentaries 'Lords of Dogtown' and 'Bones Brigade'. Cheers!
I hate how people just dismiss the skating culture of the 90s. People just assume hip hop is responsible for the trends to day when in reality it was skating .supreme was a skating brand.

Um, no. Don't get me wrong, this added to his legacy, however, he was a legend WAY before this 900.
SuburbanHobbyist I think his point is that Tony Hawk wouldn’t be the most iconic Skateboarder in the world if it wasn’t for the 900. That being said, no one knows. The thing is, Tony Hawk already was working on Tony Hawk Pro Skater and would likely had similar success either way. The original commenter probably isn’t aware that Tony Hawk landed plenty of 900s before this, as well as having a huge reputation for his childhood vert days. He might not know about Tony Hawks Hollywood successes from his childhood. I mean, Bam Margera and others didnt suddenly lookup to Hawk once he landed a 900, haha, it was years on years of inspiring dedication to the sport that made Hawk so inspiring. But his continued contribution is definitely making that carving in our mind deeper and deeper every year.

Tony Hawk would have been considered one of the "godfathers" of vert and overall skating regardless of if he landed this 900 that day. His rep and status were already well known and assured before this. All this did was add to it and possibly expand his amazing cred into even another generation of skaters.

@@jeremyrhansen6637 they were not protesting it at all. every skater from that competition who has been asked about it spoke on how they all wanted him to finally land it because he had come the closest. They were a family even though they were competing.
When I watched this a a kid, I got so hyped. And I'm proud of my achievement on that day. Because on that day, I managed to have 22 stitches, the record in my town.
The most impressive thing to me is him surviving all the fails, I can't even get out of the couch without banging in to the coffee table
It also helps that Tony always wore good gear. I can’t think of many times I’ve seen him skate without helmet, and knee and elbow pads.
He was very skilled indeed. Didn't fight gravity and just let the impact spread, thus minimizing injuries and trauma.
Learning to fall safely is one of the first things a skateboarder learns.

I'm a year older than Tony. My wife, sons, and myself watched this live. The whole family was rooting for him to stick it. When he did, the whole family erupted in cheers. He's a forever legend because of his innovation, humanity, and because he is just a good dude.
I remember watching this live. To this day it is still one of the most inspiring and beautiful moments I’ve ever experienced. I still tear up every time.

I saw a random Tony Hawk video that came out of nowhere, watched this, and now CZcams will assume I'm a big fan of his.
Had to come rewatch this classic after seeing that 9 yo kid hit 3 900s back to back, humans have a crazy way of pushing the bar with sports but it's thanks to moments like this that them doors open
I still remember that night like it was yesterday. I remember the feeling of anxiousness my big brother and I had sitting in front of the TV. We were all the way in Michigan but it’s like I could feel the energy of that place. When he finally landed we were jumping up and down screaming and even as a 10 year old realizing how big of a deal it was for skateboarding. I’m 27 now and I still skate because of Tony, and much because of this night! I’m rambling now but man, what a moment in sports history!

The Tarzan team actually did a lot of research with skaters to try and get his tree surfing scenes as accurate as they could've. Makes sense that they're advertising it here, pretty rad.

Tony Hawk was my skateboard hero when I was 12 and beyond. I was 22 going on 23 when I saw this happen on live TV (or at least the initial broadcast) and cheering and crying at the same time. He's a nice dude and a talented skater, and to see him accomplish this feat was nothing short of wonderful for me. ROCK ON, TONY.
When I saw Tony Hawk hit the 900 live I went insane with excitement. This changed the X games forever.
What's most impressive is he did it at a height of 6'3''. How many good skaters or snowboarders are that tall and can pull tricks that..

New or non skaters tend to forget this isnt his only great achievement, but it was the climax indeed. Thank you for introducing us to skating Tony, and for inventing half the tricks done on Vert. Undisputed Vert GOAT, and most important skater alongside Rodney and Gonz IMO.
I didn't grow up bring into skateboarding, but I just love how much Tony Hawk has done for the skating community, and how they, in turn, seem to always support him. It's awesome to see!!
This brings back crazy memories of my dad and I watching this, we had just got cable for 1st time and were glued to the X Games. I was like in 5th or 6th grade, this was one of the most epic moments in TV history. It was a best trick contest, and as you can see and hear, the other contestants couldn't care less about winning, we needed Tony to make history that day, and he did. Sure, other people were doing their runs, but they gave Tony like over 10 tries to pull it off and would not let him stop until he made it. Such a unique moment.
They even bought up extra tv time so the world could watch him do it live.

I remember sitting in my living room on my couch with my then 2 year old son (who is now 26) watching this live on TV. It was probably one of the greatest sports moments I have ever witnessed.
Because of this and all my tony hawks games. I enjoy this sport, I also love BMX because of dave mirra RIP you two will always be that face of that sport.

I'm not a skateboarder but I felt inspired when I watched this live. It was amazing.
Saw this live at crazy am in the UK. The other skaters and croud support was unreal. The guys had a beat going with their boards giving him good vibes. He was at it for almost 10mins after time. I was a blader at the time and seriously considered switching. Just incredible. They asked him what's next, he shrugged and said 1080 and grinned.
God, I still LOVE that entire thing.
Not EVEN so much the landed 900... but that he had *so* much love, dedication, support, family, fans, friends, training, hard work and more behind him on it.
I only *WISH* I had ever had such a volume of (consistent) support over the years in my own endeavors. 😎 Instead, there were many who wanted to see me fail, and... they had some level of influence, that's for certain! 💪😎🤟

Loved being there to watch him do it, by far the nest experience of my life. Makes it a little better because it was on my 9th birthday, ended up picking up a new board that day too. Got home and started trying, took me a couple years to get a 540 down. Then a skate park opened up in my city, first day I went i started trying again, unfortunately I bailed at the worst possible time and landed on my back on the rail. Now I get to roll everywhere.
