  • Learn how to make a ruler marking gauge from a few pieces of leftover materials you might have around your shop. This simple shop built tool will come in very handy without costing too much to build.
I have a number of marking gauges in the workshop but sometimes on a complex woodworking project you will have them all set to measurements. In this situation and additional marking gauge is great making this ruler stop a useful project to pass a couple of hours.
I used a scrap of Walnut from my box of interesting wood, a small piece of maple veneer and a brass thumbscrew available from your favourite online auction site for about a pound and with the help of Jimbob the shop dog finished this project in a couple of days. The longest part of the whole job was applying the six coats off finishing oil that needs about six hours between coats.
All in all I’m happy with the outcome and look forward to using it in years to come.

    Hello again Patrick,
This particular video kept bouncing up into my feeds ( obviously because I enjoy your channel ) so I finally decided to check it out here 😊. Funny thing is I don’t have a ruler with a stopper like this and I have a bunch of extra pieces of ebony, rosewood, maple etc…
Now that you’ve planted a seed into my head here I’m going to have to make one as well ahah! Great little ( and as always informative! ) video, thank you once again for sharing your thoughts and ideas.
    Tommy~

Hi, I’ve just come across your site, nice little build. Where do you source the small brass screw?

Hi, It’s a piece of maple veneer. Purely decorative, it isn’t needed for the gauge to work.

Very good looking. What is the name of the screw used?
Won't the screw scratch the ruler over time?
