Lies sounds like a Beatles song without sounding like any specific Beatles song. They didn't just make a few changes to I Want to Hold Your Hand, or I'm Down, or She Loves You or Can't Buy Me Love. Lies was a new song that just sounded as if it was written and sung by Lennon.
I have been in bands since the early 60's and remember hearing "lies" on the radio around mid 60's and immediately thought it was another Beatles tune !
The Knickerbockers were a garage band out of a small town in New Jersey. " Lies " was released in Nov. of 65, a month before Rubber Soul. It's a good rocker,😊 obviously heavily influenced by the Fab Four.
Karl Buckholtz supposedly their label was inept and failed to effectively promote/distribute a few other Knickerbocker tracks that could have been hits. Stream some of their stuff - I think you’ll like it. They were a legitimate band that was formed in 1962 and made some waves in various styles of their era. Sadly they ended up on the trash heap of musical history like so many other talented musical groups that just didn’t get the breaks.
I first heard this song sung by Linda Ronstadt on her "Get Closer" album from 1982. I later heard The Knickerbocker's version on one of the "Nuggets" CD's from Rhino Records, I can't remember which volume it was. ha! But yes, this really does sound a lot like The Beatles. I think The Dave Clark Five have a few Beatles sounding songs to explore.
Outstanding work here, TJR. I loved "Lies" then and now, but I remember being confused in 1965 as to why The Knickerbockers sounded like The Beatles, but looked like The Four Seasons onstage. It took them a year or so to figure out that The British Invasion look was not a passing fad. The Sir Douglas Quintet at this same time borrowed the instrumental groove of The Beatles "She's a Woman" for their first hit song "She's About a Mover."
For my fellow Beatle-freaks: "Listen Listen" by The Merry-Go-Round. Emmitt Rhoads from The Merry-Go-Round went on to do several solo albums on which he played all the instruments. His "The Mirror" album, in particular, is very Beatlesque and well worth checking out. Very catchy.
This is a great idea for a series! Keep 'em coming! Can't wait to hear you cover Klaatu, specifically "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" and especially "Sub-Rose Subway."
Thanks for this insightful video. I'd just heard "Lies" while listening to an overnight radio program. The host, used it as bumper music coming back from a commercial break but failed to make mention of what his audience had just heard because he was in a rush to correct some factual error he'd made during a previous segment. So I immediately Google the song and found this video
A very curious one is Jellyfish's She Still Loves Him from 1991 . The band got a lot of industry buzz for their melodic sensibilities and the songwriters ended up writing material for Ringo's Time take Time a year later, so the connection is there. When the remake of Free as a Bird was done in 1993 the production and the arrangement, tempo, and harmonies sounds like it was hugely influenced by the aforementioned Jellyfish song, almost as if they used that as a template to 'update the beatles sound for the times'. A Beatles influenced group influencing the Beatles as it were, worth a listen.
I saw them ‘perform’ Lies on the old Lloyd Thaxton syndicated dance party show in the 60s. Their 2nd single “ One Track Mind” didn’t chart well (#45) due to their label’s inability to distribute it. The only other memory I had of the band is I recognized the drummer, who later replaced Bill Medley in the Righteous Brothers.
I understand your rule about no Beatle covers, but you should still consider Badfinger’s “No Matter What”. This was a good vid, I appreciate the musical analysis.
I always thought that Go All The Way by The Raspberries was kind of Beatles-like. You could compare the "come on, come on, come on" part to Please Please Me.
I am offended that The Rutles were derided here. The Beatles started out as a Rutles copy band. Just ask Paul McCartney or Pete Best- they will fess up. That's like saying Star Wars wasn't influenced by Spaceballs.
Its funny I never connected the two songs and I've been listening to for 55yrs, I said this similarity 15 yrs ago on You tube! Great Job Buddy! I think Hold your head up sounds like Paul!
I have a few. 1.Your turn to cry - The Dave Clark five 2.Birdie told me - The Bee gees 3.Stuck in the middle with you - Stealers wheel 4.Hourglass - Squeeze 5.Please don't feel too bad - The Hollies 6.Midnight sun - Bad finger 7.I don't remember your name - The records 8.Every little thing - Jeff Lynne 9.So you are a star - Hudson brothers 10.Midnight blue - Electric light orchestra 11.Saltwater - Julian Lennon 12.All by myself - Eric Carmen 13.The kids are alright - The Who 14.All good things - Klaatu 15.Saturday night out - The Searchers 16.Take it or leave it - The Rolling Stones 17.No myth - Michael Penn 18.Busy Line - Herman's Hermits 19.Hippy hippy shake - The Swinging bluejeans 20.She's leaving home - Barnaby Bye
Do you know It's gonna be alright by Smyle from the Netherlands, 1973-era? The song is composed by George Kooymans from the Golden Earring and it's sung by a very Lennon-esk Bas Muijs who later became the main voice in the Stars on 45 Beatles medley.
I just did. A lot of interesting similarities. It would appear that "Too Much Talk" was released in late 1967 and the Beatles released Paperback Writer in 1966. I wonder if the Beatles ever heard it? Maybe they did and just didn't care. I personally don't think it's close enough to cry copyright though. Thanks for pointing this out.
@@TJRtheOriginal I agree with you that it's not close enough to cry copyright. It's not as blatant as "Lies." I don't recall if the Beatles ever went after any artist for copyright claims. So many Bands were influenced by the Beatles. Thanks for replying.
When I started to listen to this song I was like... If this song was written today we would expect a lawsuit! Some songs that sounds a bit like the Beatles that I can suggest: All BeTthere For You - The Rembrandts In My Own Time - Bee Gees Strawberryfire - Apples In Stereo Daddy's Car - AI (Sony CSL research laboratory)

When that song came out I thought it was a new Beatles song. I really love hearing that song “Lies”.👍👍😎
When I was young I assumed it was the Beatles. Still sounds great to me.

I've never heard of The Knickerbockers, but this was good.
@E.A.D.G Groove I just listened to it. I've never heard the song before, but I like it.
I've only just heard this song, and could not think of anything but the Beatles!
Lies is a great song in it's own right ! I remember dj'ing at a gig and when I played this someone came up and asked if it was Beatles :)
I'm old enough to remember when that song first came out.....definitely a one hit wonder

Even more obvious, "Lies" sounds like the song they used as the template for the title song to the movie "That Thing You Do."

Coming to this video late but really enjoyed it and would love to see more episodes in this series.

The Beau Brummels "Laugh, Laugh". ELP's "Lucky Man" sounds like a prog Rubber Soul track.
The Knickerbockers are when you order the Beatles from wish
The singer of Lies even uses a Liverpudlian accent pronouncing "girl."
John plays NO CHORDS on IWTHYH until the bridge . Lennon plays two note intervals for the rhythm. It’s an uncanny rhythm until the bridge …
This is great
Thanks!
A few of the early Bee Gees material sounds beatlesque

John Lennon heard this song and ask Paul is is this one of our songs, I don't remember doing this song.
“Itchycoo Park” by The Small Faces is another one.

You should do one on Van Morrison and Them and compare it with Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones. A lot of simularity.
Would you consider doing something similar with Colours' "Love Heals" from 1968? Another great "sounds like The Beatles" tune!
I need to check it out! Thanks for the suggestion!

I’ll Be The One by Badfinger always reminded me of a lost Beatles track
I'm late to the party and it sounds just like Paperback Writer.

Rock Of Ages by Badfinger. Ever hear that one?
And to think that when you watch 'Bohemian Rhapsody' your friends will think that your Queen Funkos are the Beatles.....
More please
Hippy Hippy Shake
