Wonderful. I grew up in the bush in Tanzania, & this song was always around, being sung by watu & Wazungu alike. Makes you long for Africa. Great rendition.
I'm just bummed out that there's no actual music video that goes with this song. I think it would've been really cool!!!! These guys are really talented. I wish that my group and I sounded this good.
I just loooooove these guys, they are strictly awesome! And the sweetest, nicest guys, always natural and friendly, no big head starmania attitude, in one word, THEBEST, lol!
I heard that this is a South African folk song used to pass the msg that Shaka Zulu had died. "The Lion" refers to Shaka Zulu and "sleeps" mean died. So "in" the village sounds more accurate to me.
I love how he plays with the microphone. Like, you can hear as he pulls it away as the pitch bends upwards. From what I know about flute, it's pretty difficult to decrease volume going up a scale. Just wow at this :P
Wow the note leading into the next part of the verse at 0:37 and 1:08 was really great! It almost sounds like there is an echo effect.. probably because he was pulling the mic away from his face giving the illusion that it's quieter..
1952/53, Billy Williams Quartet, semi-regulars on Sid Caesar's, Your Show of Shows; Live , B&W TV did this several times. It was exceptional and repeated by requests. Have been searching for a copy a long time.... This version close except for some "hot dogging" !
People who don't like Rockapella can do whatever they want. Who are you to not allow people to comment their opinion on the internet? I don't have a problem with the singers, but cmon, it's not like disliking them means you're doing something wrong. =/
@Snylor THANK YOUUUUUU!!!!! :D, yea thanks, I myself needed to be reminded of that, as I wouldn't respond HARSHLY, but I just wouldn't understand WHY people wouldn't think this sounds good.
I think they are just singing it in a key that is a couple steps lower than you're used to hearing it. So the high note (you know which one I'm talking about) is what you're hearing lower, and that's the easiest means of comparison.
@cork2255 Though the pictures show George Baldi (bass) and John K. Brown (tenor), neither of them are in this version. Barry Carl was the bass on this (he has his own website if you're interested). Barry has a deeper bass than George, but his upper range isn't as clean as George. Though he doesn't shake the walls like Barry, I think George is a bit more versatile when it comes to what he can sing lead on.
@Jetfan44 yeah i know for sure. i have the video (that's right VHS - because that's how long ago this was recorded) and i synced them up exactly. you can't miss barry carl's voice anyway.. it's so distinct.
I miss Elliot Kerman. The new baritone (John Brown) is great, don't get me wrong! I guess I'm just wistful and nostalgic for the old "Carmen Sandiego" Rockapella crew. ^_^
George is actually a baritone which is why he has a better upper register then Barry but can still hit those low notes. He also has a great falsetto and he is so hot to look at. I have seen them many times, just last week as a matter of fact, and I will never stop seeing them no matter how many member changes they make (although I hope they never get rid of George).
@braducsb2 ... also. the lyrics you are 'ah wimoweh' but they weren't the original lyrics. the song was originially called 'mbube' when written by solomon linda which meant 'lion' in 'zulu'. when sung some years later by a group called the weavers, they titled it 'wimoweh' after mishearing the original songs chorus of 'uyimbube' which in zulu meant 'you're a lion'. new lyrics were written by the group with arguable the most popular version, the tokens.
Actually, Barry and Elliot are in this. It's from their "In Concert" CD. The pictures in the video aren't the correct lineup. I forget when Kevin left. I miss all three of them, but the new guys (George, John and Steven) are good.
Kinda weird that this is a concert performance (from album & DVD "In Concert") from before George Baldi III & John K. Brown, yet they're in all of the images.
@lilomimi94 they left the group years ago. barry carl is doing his own thing and casually singing with the other 3 original rockapella members. they are called XRP (ex-rockapella i assume?). elliott has taken up a jazz career i think? don't quote me on that though..
love this song. too bad this version is back when barry carl and elliott kerman were still in rockapella.. might want to get the pictures with the right band members in it next time FLORENCOM.
i love rockapella. my favourite group in the world. what annoys me is when people dont do their research. FLORENCOM, this version was from their live stage show when barry carl and elliot kerman were still in the group. the pictures you are showing during the video are of the new rockapella with george baldi and john k brown (the two black dudes). please get it right dude in respect to the great ex-rockapellians.
@koobra87 i'm not 'trolling' this dude for posting the song.. the song is great, i was just disappointed that he the stills accompanying the audio is not a true image of the group that recorded this version of the song. and florencom doesn't look like someone that would put a spoof video over this song.. as he has posted like a million other versions of 'the lion sleeps tonight'.
Wonderful. I grew up in the bush in Tanzania, & this song was always around, being sung by watu & Wazungu alike. Makes you long for Africa. Great rendition.
pure talent.. rock hard talent... it wil take me 1000 years just to be like this good... praise rockapella!
grew up watching where in the world is carmen sandiego just to hear these guys sing....lol! Kewls thanx for posting this. : D
These guys are absolutely SPECTACULAR!!! I wish that my friend and I sounded this good. This is one of their best ones!! Way to go, fellas!!
I'm just bummed out that there's no actual music video that goes with this song. I think it would've been really cool!!!! These guys are really talented. I wish that my group and I sounded this good.
this is fun to hear on a Thursday after noon getting read to take a nap.
starts to sing along.
rockapella will always be good, but i miss the older ones from the carmen sandiego show, they were the best
I feel ya, but it is the way of things. Teach them well, pass the torch, step aside, and pray you got it right.
I love this song! The harmonies are amazing!
Why the fuck am i tearing up hearing this? Wtf
u weren't the only one, I asked myself the same question
I love how he plays with the microphone. Like, you can hear as he pulls it away as the pitch bends upwards. From what I know about flute, it's pretty difficult to decrease volume going up a scale. Just wow at this :P
FABULOUS STILL SHOTS!! Enjoyed very much! thanks!!!
....a nearly perfect performation....! Sounds really superb!!!
Wow the note leading into the next part of the verse at 0:37 and 1:08 was really great! It almost sounds like there is an echo effect.. probably because he was pulling the mic away from his face giving the illusion that it's quieter..
THIS IS SOOOOOOO TIGHT! I LOVE THIS.!
Magnifico !!!!!
1952/53, Billy Williams Quartet, semi-regulars on Sid Caesar's, Your Show of Shows; Live , B&W TV did this several times. It was exceptional and repeated by requests. Have been searching for a copy a long time.... This version close except for some "hot dogging" !
This makes me absurdly pleased.
wow that soloist voice is great and he can sing so high! he can sing stuff in full voice that i can only sing in falsetto, damn! mad props!
love this song .....
one of the best rockapella
The best cover i averd heard the man ho's singing is just awesome!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic!!!!!
rockapella i thnk has been my favoite group since the been on the tv show
Beautiful
it doesn't matter if it's the carmen Sandiego era or the current line up rock-apeller keeps this wonderful style of music so alive
Rockapella is awesome!
Great Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, well done!!
this sounds awesomeee!!!
The quote 'Do it, Rockapella' came from that game show Where In the World is Carmen Diego
even with the clapping, it only adds to the legacy that the band and their songs have.
Love it I was also looking 4 this
^_^ Rockapella is amazing. FYI guys: People that don't like this kinda music should probably keep there ignorance out of the comment box
loved it :)
oh my god!!!!!!!!!!!! awesome!!!!
i love themmmmm
As much as I miss Elliot and Barry, this lineup is still very good. I understand Kevin left sometime within the last couple of years as well.
People who don't like Rockapella can do whatever they want. Who are you to not allow people to comment their opinion on the internet? I don't have a problem with the singers, but cmon, it's not like disliking them means you're doing something wrong. =/
this is really good
Rockapella's awesum
yes its the guy that sings the high notes, Scott leonard
best acapella
Que bonitoo!:)
@Snylor THANK YOUUUUUU!!!!! :D, yea thanks, I myself needed to be reminded of that, as I wouldn't respond HARSHLY, but I just wouldn't understand WHY people wouldn't think this sounds good.

I live for a capella.
I just saw them live today at NJPAC they doing another show tomorow At NJPAC
Omnomnomnomnom I love Rockapella.

Is the guy that look alike Owen Wilson the lead singer?
nice.. good base..
WIN!!!!
@Jetfan44 yeah i know for sure. i have the video (that's right VHS - because that's how long ago this was recorded) and i synced them up exactly. you can't miss barry carl's voice anyway.. it's so distinct.
Is that David Guetta in the middle?
I miss Elliot Kerman. The new baritone (John Brown) is great, don't get me wrong!
I guess I'm just wistful and nostalgic for the old "Carmen Sandiego" Rockapella crew. ^_^

IN the village rather than NEAR the village. This version is scary.
@thebuckrogers22 im glad someone remembers that besides me.
Barry Carl is his name.
There is no such thing as too many performances of this song a capella on city street in the US.
why barry carl and elliot kerman arent in the group anymore?
@braducsb2 ... also. the lyrics you are 'ah wimoweh' but they weren't the original lyrics. the song was originially called 'mbube' when written by solomon linda which meant 'lion' in 'zulu'. when sung some years later by a group called the weavers, they titled it 'wimoweh' after mishearing the original songs chorus of 'uyimbube' which in zulu meant 'you're a lion'. new lyrics were written by the group with arguable the most popular version, the tokens.
@drstrap
It's on YT, my friend - just type in "The Tokens"! Enjoy!
Actually, Barry and Elliot are in this. It's from their "In Concert" CD. The pictures in the video aren't the correct lineup. I forget when Kevin left. I miss all three of them, but the new guys (George, John and Steven) are good.
19 people want vocal's like rockapella
This is a folk song, and in folk music there are no 'definitive' versions.
I'd like vocals like that too, but I liked the vid...
Where in the world is Carmen San Diego ? Do it, Rockapella.
@ljeptircic, it's live.
@moondogz10 I did not know that - thanks for the info. Very interesting!
hehe świetne:)
they are great :)
@GaGe701 Jeff Thacher is still in the group. Were you thinking of Elliott or Kevin?
@assaultu lol there's only ten of them but i see what you mean. I think both groups are fantastic!!! they both rule a capella music :D
Kinda weird that this is a concert performance (from album & DVD "In Concert") from before George Baldi III & John K. Brown, yet they're in all of the images.
Ani nevím kdo zpívá co :D LIKE D8VÁM JÁ :D
@armegedinox I get to see them and the coats on Friday! :D
*mind blown*
@lilomimi94 they left the group years ago. barry carl is doing his own thing and casually singing with the other 3 original rockapella members. they are called XRP (ex-rockapella i assume?). elliott has taken up a jazz career i think? don't quote me on that though..
🦁!!! x
love this song. too bad this version is back when barry carl and elliott kerman were still in rockapella.. might want to get the pictures with the right band members in it next time FLORENCOM.
Facts
@chadvvvickable I think its a toss up. SnC is good, but theres like 15 of them. I like the fact that they have fun with it. Theyre both fantastic.
after the first 15 seconds its the beat boxer
@ljeptircic, it's building up on it like an album version can't, I guess.
Where's Barry?!
He's not on the picture, but I think I hear him?
Am I wrong?
BAS wrrrr :)) super
This reminds me of the Lion king and the end of Cars
Unfortunatly, Barry quit a few years ago :(
Not quit, retired. He felt he did his part in the group and was time to move on
Its really hard to tell if this is old or new, someone know for sure?
@ljeptircic I do not think that "oxymoron" means what you think it means.
i love rockapella. my favourite group in the world. what annoys me is when people dont do their research. FLORENCOM, this version was from their live stage show when barry carl and elliot kerman were still in the group. the pictures you are showing during the video are of the new rockapella with george baldi and john k brown (the two black dudes). please get it right dude in respect to the great ex-rockapellians.
lmao well you realize that, thats respect. unlike tons of ppl on american idol
@Wellch I'm afraid I don't understand. Are you implying that Rockapella should cover Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?!?! They wrote it!
@gpalyi definitly...
haha.. good one!
1:50 and beyond is sick. In a good way.
He's peaceful... after filling himself up on a tasty snack of delicious villagers...!
