In this video, I’m going to show you how to plaster an Aretx ceiling using British Gypsum Bonding.
There are many ways to deal with Artex ceilings but the safest and possibly quickest way is to plaster over the Artex using a backing plaster. This way you're not disturbing the Artex and potentially avoiding any disruption which could release the dreaded Asbestos.
Its a simple process but still worth watching because I cover how to
- Apply the British Gypsum Bonding
- Mixing plaster with some tips on making it set faster
- Prepare your ceiling ready for plastering
- The tools and materials I recommend for the job
- Tips and tricks for working with Bonding.
These are some of the topics we cover in this video with other tips on tricks on plastering ceilings and walls.
This tutorial also covers using a product called Halftime 4 Bonding. This is an accelerator that speeds up the setting time of Bonding. I’m going to test to see whether this little bad boy works or not.
That's what we cover in today's video! If you like this training please like and subscribe to our channel and please feel free to leave any comments. I’d love to hear from you! For more information on plastering please visit our website below:

Great work. Plasterers are in a league of their own!
My plastering is very nearly there now! as I was learning these videos helped me out massively thanks!!👍👍👍
Good man. I'm glad it's worked out for you and thank you for watching! I appreciate it pal 👍
You make this job so easy for everyone. Great videos. Kepp up the good work.
I used to bung a handful of cement in the bonding......it goes off quick then ;) great work as always
This definately works mate! Sometimes too well haha! Thanks mate, I appreciate that. Cheers 👍
Bonding goes off quick anyway
A true master of the art . Another top ( Tuition ) video ,many thanks.👍
Thank you mate. I really appreciate that and thank you for watching 👍
Your welcome dude .I am a bricklayer but do the odd plastering job as plasterers seem in general to not be interested or expecting butler service but not great production or quality ! Your tuition videos are very easy to follow and for the semi skilled man these are essential....Let’s not forget everyone learns something new every day !
Good man - well done for learning another trade mate. Bricklaying is hard enough without plastering as well so good on you. Thank you for watching, it means a lot and I'm glad it's helping you. Keep up the good work and keep learning 😉. Cheers!
Nice finish btw fair play for taking the time to put vids up
Thanks mate I really appreciate that. Cheers!
Hi Blain
I’m also in agreement with Gordon Mackie,it’s great that you are prepared to take your time to impart your knowledge to people and great vids, and I’m in no way criticising you, because no two people work the same, and we can all learn and improve from others.
However on Artexed cielings I’d always hit with a pissed out 50/50 pva mix,and let it pull in to the ceiling, then normal multi finish, and flatten out with a Refina spat on the first coat, then it’s business as normal for the second coat.
Multi finish is just that,it can be the undercoat and the top coat, most people think of multi finish as just a finishing plaster.
The key with all plastering/artexing is controlling the absorption rate of the substrate wall/ceiling,if it’s drawing too quickly you going to work hard.
Keep up the good work👍
I usually do it the same way to be fair mate. I followed the same process which I filmed for the first video I created on Artex ceilings. I just thought I'd show a different method. The video is here is anyone wants to see it:
czcams.com/video/th6IDEWK8p0/video.html
Thanks for your input and it was great hearing from you. I really appreciate it! Cheers pal 👍
Great video, cheers Blain.
No worries mate. Thank you for watching!
No sure why video got in my suggestions box but OK 😘😝..
I must have watched one of your videos fair play to ya fella.. Ive been plastering over 20yrs.
Good on you for passing your knowledge on to the next generation of trade's.. Me personally I'm to much of a moddy arse to stand there and teach others 😂.. When individuals say 'plastering easy' my reply is, can you lay on a 22m2 ceiling single handed, clean up, rough out walls or ceiling for your next hit??
Answers always no..
Also the best to you for future 👍
Being still old school you have made me get my first ox speedskim today lol being 40 I need to make me last another 10 years at least lol love the videos keep up good work👍👍
It definately helps mate!! Haha I hear you - we all need to work! Thank you for watching, I really appreciate it! Cheers pal 👍
I won't do a ceiling without my speedskim and pole these days. Yeah you still have to trowel but for the flattening it reduces the work for you and saves on your neck. Saves so much time looking up
Pva ,,magic mix 60/40 bonding/plaster then normal 2 coat plaster 👍 like the vids keep em coming
Cheers matey, I appreciate it!
Nice one Blaine! 👍
Cheers matey!!
Magic mix. Couple handfuls of bonding in the ski.. let it pull in. Thwn another good coat of skim
Keep up the vids.
Cheers for that and thanks for watching!!
Thats how I do heavy artex ceiling saves waiting around for the bonding few handfuls of bonding in the mix then a heavy 2nd coat of multi
Wicked video thanks
Nice job thanks
Good to see uv upgraded from a bottle crate to a hop up
Plasterers are a special bread of humans 👍 half time personally only use in finish. Bonding 60 is way forward. Personally prefer sbr over pva . Zombie coat on first coat . 80 to 90 percent board finish and 10 to 20 percent Bonding then 100 percent board finish to top off . We all have our ways to get that smooth flat finish . 👍🙈👍. Mad one on super uneven surface I use medi flex to applie but always flaten off with a twister or refina blade. I gave yet to try plastic speedster. Speedskimmer . Hated the plastic trowel so maybe I need to try but not convinced with plastic blades trowels . Weird even my wife doesn't understand that I watch your videos after a day on the trowel 😆. Great vids keep it up 👍
How's it going mate! Sounds like you have it sorted - like the Zombie coat. Never heard of that ha!! It's always tough with an uneven wall/ ceiling but your way sounds legit. I love a plastic mate. Amazing finish!
Hahaha that's funny! Thank you for watching anyway pal...I really appreciate it and thanks for the comments. It's great hearing from you 👍
Also if you are going to bond it try mixing half and half with multi then just lay in a second coat of skim when it goes brown
Good video mate, been watching all of your vids and going to try and plaster a small wall next week, just a quick question, once I've plastered the wall, if I've got any plaster left in the bucket, is it worth starting another wall bearing in mind that there may not be enough to finish the second wall? I'm guessing you dont want to part plaster a wall and have to finish it with a new batch of plaster and try to cover the seam? Keep up the awesome vids as well :)
Thanks mate, I really appreciate that! No... only start a wall that you can finish - finish plaster doesn't patch in like filler. Hope this helps pal 👍
I have a Artex ceiling to cover with cracks all over. Is it worth taping again prior to the Bonding coat?
do you think you could use premixed plaster or does it not matter?
Seen a plasterer who used a mix of half bonding half multi finish called it magimix to cover latex ceiling cant remember his name
Hey Blain, you are bound to get some knocks from the old stagers but I find your tutorials excellent , I am a sparks by trade but nowadays I suppose classed as multi trade.
I am 70 and still keen to learn. Thanks.
Hi Blaine At what point with Artex do you decide to use a bonding coat first? Is it the thickness of the pattern in the artex? About to do a ceiling job but undecided on whether to just skim or bonding then skim. Great series of videos mate!
If you’ll have no chance of remotely covering the pattern with the first coat then that’s when it’s time to bond it, overboard it, or do a magic mix first clay which is bonding in the multi finish, Ie one bag of multi finish with a quarter of a bag of bonding mixed in, gives you more time and its fluffy and nice to spread
Do you need to pva the artic before bonding
3:07 thought you was taking a leak on the floor for a second there!
Another great video mate. Where did you get the wrist strap?
Thanks mate! I got it from a sports store pal - they are very common matey!
Is this just bonding plaster no multi mixed into it?
Is it possible to plaster over all artex?
Hi like your helpful informative videos. I plastered my bathroom today and got multi finish in my eye. Very sore and after 5 different ways of washing it out I am messaging you with tears still streaming from my right eye. How long should I give it before heading to A&E ? What do you do ? I was coming to the end and my plaster was to stiffen and I tried to work it a bit to soften. Any info would be great thanks
Mate I think you need to go A&E - hope you're ok my friend 😭😭😭
Would you ever blue grit the ceiling
Do you pva on the artex before bonding ?
Great videos, could I use a roller to apply pva? Instead of the brush, cheers
Yeah mate... That's a great way to do it!!
Great videos! Quick question if i apply a bonding coat to my ceiling will i need to plaster over it straight away or am i able to leave it and come back to it when ready? I'm gonna be plastering my ceiling and walls. Ill be bonding the ceiling then skimming walls and ceiling with multi finish. Can you expand on what you said about tieing the walls into the ceiling as i don't want it to crack. obviously ill be tackling the ceiling first. then moving onto the walls, complete beginner, any advice for meeting walls and ceiling?
It's totally up to you mate. As long as you PVA the Bonding then it doesn't matter how long you wait - but apply 2 coats of PVA if you're going to plaster it the next day. Use Scrim tape on all your edges and your walls will be tied in pal. Hope this helps mate 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners Hi Blaine, if I come back to it the next day, for the two coats of PVA, how long between each coat is applied? Spoke to British Gypsum also, and they said just wet it and they’re dead against PVA on the bonding. Thanks for the videos btw. They’re a big help
Brilliant videos, but don't most people try to get rid of artex?
How long after I bond up can I scim on to it. I always wait till day after but ppl say wait an hour!! But I don't want to chance it. But some times it's a bit of bond but not worth waiting until the next day. Hope this makes sense lol many thanks John
Hi mate! An hour should be enough pal. As long as it's hard then there really shouldn't be a problem 👍
When you knocked up that bonding in your decent bucket 😂😂 haha we’ve all done it, defo need to get a few sachets of these you used them for skimming? I know people say use dirty water but not a fan tbh
Ha yeah I should've known better I suppose ha! Yeah mate you get Halftime for Bonding and a separate one for finish plaster 👍
Hi, im about to plaster my first artex ceiling, is the bonding the best method or knocking the high spots off and plastering?
Knock off high spots then bond 👍🏻
Lol bonding fxcks wrecks everything another good vlog fella
Haha it does pal! Cheers mate I appreciate it!
What would you recommend for a artex ceiling that's very thick?, I reckon a inch in most places. I was going to just overboard but when iv got on the job, iv never seen anything like it.
I think I would overboard if it's that bad my friend 👍
so you put bonding on first on a artexed ceiling and the pva before the multi ,is that the right way? thanks Allan
That's correct pal 👍
i got an advert for you on your own video!
Did you use same mix or a fresh mix for second coat?
I used the same mix of multi for this video but I usually do seperate
mixs to be fair pal!
Hi Blaine, i have a house built in the 70s with artex on the ceilings everywhere with the low dimples style(tested positive for asbestos). Would this process you used to here be applicable in my case or not really? Good video to watch btw
Yes definately my friend. Unless you want to pay for someone to dispose of it - otherwise this is the best way. Hope this helps mate 👍
Plastering For Beginners your some guy for replying cheers 👌
Explained well good video. Just one question though I e-mailed British gypsum about bonding plaster on ceilings because I need to bond a ceiling 8mm bag says 8mm on ceilings, British gypsum technical support says no 8mm can't work on ceilings? You look like you're putting on bonding quite thin just to level things out, what your experience Blaine?
Well laths and plaster were a lot thicker than 8mm so it all depends on the surface your plastering onto! I'm guessing they're worried about the weight!! It would be a lot of extra plaster!
@@PlasteringForBeginners technical support e-mailed back today saying 5mm to 8mm is fine on ceilings, they said ignore the previous e-mail. They certainly know how to confuse you. Keep vids coming blain.
hi blain, what's the best course of action with a quite heavy artexed ceiling? same procedure with a thicker coverage of bonding?
Over board to save any hassle if artex is thick and uneven . Artex as no guarntee of been reskimmable and can and does fail . The more weight added to a celing is always depending on the original bond of the artex you are covering
@@andrewmacdonald7090 thank you mate, overboard it is then, bloody artex looks so 70's
Good point Andrew - good man!
artex should never be plastered over because its not technically a plaster its a air drying compound ,it doesn't set, it dries out, unlike plaster where a chemical reaction takes place, that why u can mix a bucket of artex and use it next day once u cover the bucket ,what happens is the water in the new coat softens the artex and thats why the ceilings fail ,so overboard it ,its a much better job, ive been a spread since 1991👍
Hi there Blain, why did you not PVA the textured ceiling first before coating it with bonding??
Hi mate! I did PVA the ceiling but it was prepped when I plastered the walls weeks previously. Sorry I should have stated that in the video. My bad 👍
Pre grit?
Was just gonna ask same thing ha
Nice job by the way
@@PlasteringForBeginners you MUST coat over PVA when tacky unless you mix PVA & sand. Why didn't you scrim the angles when skimming walls? Also push them wires for spots up in out the road so it's handier & quicker👍
@@dbgers784 no you mustn’t. I always go over my neat pva when it’s dry and have never had any problems
Hi Blaine, That ceiling height looked as awkward as hell never liked confined spaces like that but you do what you got to do, I always use the gorilla buckets etc for bonding easier to clean like others have said I use the bonding and plaster mix but everyone is different... Enjoyed the video as always mate 👍
Haha it was a bit of a nightmare to be honest but I got through it! Yeah I should have use a Gorilla tub - Hopefully I'll learn for next time ha! Thanks for watching and it was great hearing from you. Cheers pal 👍
How long do you leave bounding before you plaster over it?
Until it's set dry to touch and doesn't move
After plastering over artex what can you do if some of the lines come throw.
You can either sand it down or re-plaster it my friend 👍
All depends on how heavy the artex is if it's over 6mm I will coat it out with a bonding/finish mix or just bonding but I get away with doing alot of artex ceiling with just using multi I will try and upload my method when I get a chance In no way am I criticising your work nice job m8 👍only thing I never heard in vid or saw in description was did you pva the artex ceiling after scraping it its imperative that you do this not knocking u bud
Me too pal. My first video on Artex ceilings, (which is on my channel), I tackled the same way - I just wanted to provide another method. However, I usually do it the way you said. I didn't actually scrape this one which is why I bonded it but the ceiling was PVA'd prior. Great hearing from you and I look forward to seeing your next video pal. Cheers 👍
Here's the video if anyone is interested 👍 czcams.com/video/th6IDEWK8p0/video.html
@@PlasteringForBeginners good old artex keeps us busy👍
Ha it does matey!
Same here mate. My old gaffer once used straight bonding on an artex ceiling, and because it stayed wet for ages it soaked through the pva and through artex and fell down. He heard a little creek when he was toweling up, suspected it might come down, so told customer to empty kitchen, sheet up and it dropped at 2.30am. Literally came off in one sheet and brought the artex with it. He then just pva'd it and skimmed it. I've never trusted neat bonding over artex, usually just use multi and when needed 2/3 finish 1/3 bonding.
Hey Blaine. Is it normal for the wires to be flapping about in the breeze like that.. If it was me I would've shoved them into the void and the sparkie would fish them down when they come to 2nd fix.
Haha it unfortunately is my friend. I find a lot of sparkies leave their cables like that to be honest. It never helps but you are right. I should just poke them through and let them deal with it afterwards haha 😂
@@PlasteringForBeginners serious. I follow a couple of them on here and they set them into the back boxes and recesses afterwards. Maybe only CZcams sparkies do this 😂
What trowel do you use for laying on ?
I use the Marshalltown Permashape pal!
Do u always pva before bonding even on plaster board please repl y
Hi mate! You don't need to on plasterboard but any other backgrounds are essential pal.
Im no expert but I’ve been told that extra time is just cream of tartar with the added price tag. What are your thoughts?
Hello pal! I've never actually used it but I have friends in our plastering group that swear by cream of Tartar. They say it's a brilliant plaster retardant so yes..you could be right mate 👍
12 sachets of cream of tartar for the price of one extra time. 🤔
That's madness mate!! If you test it out let me know how it goes. Cheers 👍
Will do 👍🏻
Good video, I've got a similar job for my mum to do , would you need to PVA the textured cieling first or is bonding good enough, not had much dealings with bonding.
Bonding is for low suction surfaces
Love your videos Blaine! Where are you based?
Thank you mate. I'm based in Hastings my friend 👍
Is there any reviews on the Nela Edge Black Edition Spatula 600mm...1,200mm
Cant find an independent review anywhere!
I haven't yet but I'll look into it soon pal 👍
Plastering For Beginners
Would really appreciate it! Lads at the shop gave it a bad review because there is no pole or the handle can be uncomfortable on the fingers! But they have never used it only held it from off the shelf!
P.S really enjoy your vids! 👍🏻💪
That's very interesting!! I'm surprised by that mate - I'll have to give it a go. Brilliant, thank you for watching mate. I really appreciate it pal!
Plastering For Beginners your content is creative, confident and easy to listen/watch!
P.s i’m going to TW Tool Superstores in Burton to see if the OX or Refina pole+ attachment will fit the Nela Edge.
Good luck with your channel and career pal.
😇💪👏👏
First move electric wire in ceiling holes....then you doing easy an nice job lol 😄
Is bonding the same thing as browning?
Kind of - British Gypsum have stopped producing Browning so you won't see it anyone. It's a shame really, I like using it when I was in Manchester
This isn't really relevant and I'm a plumber who has an interest in all building stuff so i like to learn and trying to get half decent at plastering but it got me wondering I've seen like fibre glass scrim tape thats a fair bit more expensive than normal scrim. Does it make any difference?
Hi mate - don't worry, all questions are welcome! I actually prefer the dearer products because they actually sick. The cheap stuff is always falling off the walls - the expensive mesh is a lot better to work with mate!
Do you mix PVA in multi finish plaster?
No... It probably doesn't do it harm but I've never done it before mate!
It’s just I’ve seen some plasterers mix PVA in multifinish and they would say if you don’t then the plaster will crack🤔
Did you Pva this before bonding?
I did matey!
Why not do the ceiling first? And why not scrim the internals?
Did you not watch the video?
Why not devils float your bonding for a key
How many inches this trowel
14" pal!
Is that a wrist support your wearing ?
Yeah mate. My wrists are buggered ha!
I’ve just copped a couple, takes the strain off the joints a bit don’t it!!
It does matey!
I would just skim on to the artex after plenty of pva b4hand
That's the way I usually do it pal. I was just showing another method.
Have another one on way myself man its not easy work but we got to fix these horrible ceilings when we can :):) sorry to those who like them LOL
Hello mate how are you doing? Haha I totally agree, they can be a nightmare but it pays the bills! Great hearing from you pal, cheers 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners Doing great man for sure if we could only do a patch a day would be nice but we got to follow that $£$ :)
Haha to true my friend!!!
Do you PVA before bonding??
Yeah my friend 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners cheers brother 👊🏼
💯👍👍
Hey Brian,I’ve seen your other vid about skimming over artex ,you said 2/1 mix with ova first, but other plasterers have told me 5/1?
PVA!!!
It sounds very weak to me matey - I'd never use a mix of 5:1 but that's just me my friend 👍
Don’t you put bonding on tacky pva ?
You can do mate but it didn't matter if it dry 👍
This guide will end my nightmare of artex ceilings, walls and pretty much artex anything. Curse those last tenants!
Haha the dreaded Artex! Hope it goes well my friend!
You haven't use pva after bonding on other artex plastering videos why use now ?
It's because the Bonding set so fast with the accelerator - I needed to PVA the set Bonding to prime it again 👍
Why don’t you use a whales tail fitting to suck all that dust?
I've used a gorilla bucket for mixing bonding and its good to wack out and you can get it all out easier than a plastering mixing bucket :)
They are great for Bonding,I must admit!!
shouldn't you be going from the left to right rather than right to left
Yeah...but I mix it up mate - keep it exciting 😂
Hydrated lime through undercoats sets it of dead quick
Thanks for that pal!! I'll give that a go 😉
Oh blain be careful with it you be only got 10 to 15 mins to get it on so turbo plaster 😂
I NEVER plaster over artex anymore. Always Always overboard. Artex deteriorates when wet and has to carry the weight of all that Bonding and skim.youll get away with it most times but you'll get one come down on you believe me .and the amount of effort Bonding first is about the same as tacking it .nice job though
Fair point matey! It's not happened to me yet but never say never. Great hearing from you. Cheers 👍
17 years in and never happened to me either, had distemper but never had an artex not hold
I'm with you mate once bitten
Am I to old at52 train to be a plasterer
At 52 am i to old to be a plasterer retrained
It's hard work sometimes but I don't think so mate!
Great video mate that looks like a real awkward ceiling right pain in the bum 👍
Haha it was a bit painful to be fair but it was ok in the end pal. Thanks for watching mate, you're a legend!
You're awesome watch all your videos and brought the blueprint mate it's awesome
Thank you mate I really appreciate that and I'm glad you're finding it useful! Cheers pal, keep up the good work 👍
Thank you mate I really appreciate that and I'm glad you're finding it useful! Cheers pal, keep up the good work 👍
Nice video bud ,need to wear saftey specs nothing more painful than plaster in your pork pies. Your knees or hop up needs some grease too😉.
You are right my friend - I really need to start doing that!!
Iv always done a thick first coat and troweled it an let it fill out the artic texture then lay on and skim as normal. Never had an issue with any artex
There's nothing wrong with that matey 👍
I always overboard artex better to be safe than sorry
should have polly bonded existing
I did pal 👍
Ha ha yes your should use a separate bucket for bonding and skim never mind you’ll learn from your mistakes 😀😀😀
Hopefully pal haha!
Thistle bond the celine. Far better than pva
Save your money just put some cement in the bonding does the same job
Good shout mate!
Cement not good, better with dirty water if got any. If I done a private job I'd fill a couple of 5 gallon drums with dirty skim water from previous job 👌
if u didn't use accelerator u wouldnt have needed unibond
Fair enough!
Were a mask wen using bonding and HALT TIME..m8..
This video is delightful with headphones....NOT!
Cool!
