  • This is the second video in this series. This time it not only shows where I think Ireland differs from my birth country of Britain but shows aspects of Irish culture and infrastructure that may aid someone touring the Irish countryside.
I hope that you enjoy this and then have a look at my other videos which mainly cover hiking, camping and the Irish countryside.
Please leave. A comment, like, subscribe and turn on notifications to be informed when I post new videos.
Note: The video appears to have corrupted at the very end. I have no idea how this has happened as my file is ok. I hope this doesn’t lower your enjoyment. I have now removed the rogue music file but it has left a glitch at the end. Sorry

Anyway 14 years later, Im still here and dont think i would ever move back to London.

I used to have a drink and many more in Mcloughlins pub in Sligo , it was small and had some of the best nights fun that I can remember , I brought a friend from California to it for a drink and he told me the next day it was the best night he ever encountered, people just sang and a band called the rubber band entertained , the instruments was a rubber band , a beer tray and whatever else that made a sound. Definitely the best pub in Ireland as far as I am concerned , that was going back about forty years though .
Another thing I must point out is that you get free travel whether it be bus or train if you’re a pensioner and that covers the whole of Ireland.

Quick note : the Irish name for Dublin is Baile Átha Cliath .. which means town of the hurdle ford. Dubh Linn is where the english name comes from middle irish .. but its no longer used in irish... and yes it means dark/black pool in irish but the gaelgoirí stopped calling it that around 1365 and started to use Baile Átha Cliath which is the official name in Irish now.. . Heartwarming to watch this video. Nowadays it's the most natural thing in the world for a couple from Essex to emmigrate to and integrate in Co. Sligo. When I was growing up in Dublin in the 1950's and 60's there was still a great deal of grudging mistrust of the English and the Irish in Britain were largely seen as hod carrying Micks. The oppressive state religion (of which my innate childhood loathing has since been vindicated) along with the nationalistic propaganda taught in schools were the main reasons for me emmigrating to Germany in 1977. It's a matter of profound joy for me to see such a natural warm reconciliation between these two cultures which have more in common than they are aware of. Enjoy your life in Ireland!

The reason we have alot of ruined churches & monasteries is King Henry's dissolution of the Monasteries beginning in 1536 & the penal laws in Ireland beginning in 1695 in which Catholics were not allowed to practice their religion hence the churches suffered with no income. Many churches had their roofs removed.

A really good video. Well done! It is great that you like Ireland so much. It is the best country in the world to live. But then I am Irish and therefore biased! Two things I think you mentioned: hilly roads in Ireland and, you are from Wales. Wales is a really beautiful country but I think it may be the world champion for hilly roads! I spent a week, many years ago, cycling from Fishguard to Holyhead. The roads were top quality but an unending sequence of long stretches up and down made the cycling really tough. One memorable day was spent travelling from Aberysthwyth to Devil’s Bridge along the Vale of Rheidol narrow gauge railway. Something not to be missed. Enjoy your time in Ireland and I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Yes, Wales is a beautiful country but we were only there for nine months and lived in the town of Neath whilst preparing to move to Ireland . I am originally from London but spent most of my life in the east of England. Suffolk and Norfolk, where I spent a lot of my free time make a billiards table look hilly so it is really lovely to wake up in the morning, open the bedroom curtains and see farmland of rolling hills.

Like you, I am restoring a house
(my mother's former home in County Carlow).
I'm sure I don't need to remind you that a 26 county-wide free bus and rail pass is available to Irish residents over the age of 66 - just about to apply for mine (think you need a current PPS no., which shouldn't be an issue for you).
I know rural public transport is sparse, but a free pass should allow you (I'm being very presumptuous in assuming that you are around my age) to roam at much lower cost than would be incurred in the UK.
Suggest you speak to someone (eg a QFA specialising in Pension Entitlement) regarding your eligibility for age-related State Benefits too, if you haven't already done so.
I'd be interested to hear how you get on, and if you have already had some interaction with State entities regarding this.

Bus routes, 'Roll Out" are now linking up small towns and Villages with the Hinterland thus allowing people to connect and commute into larger towns throughout the Day to do shopping and to their workplace, this conductivity makes access to do shopping and the like , also as you say Wireless Rural Broadband is a Game changer, with good speeds and even that VOIP Phone you have what mimics a local Landline could be handy for ringing back to Wales without incurring penal International rates ...that are charged on the Mobile Network...Great Upload....

I knew someone who'd lived in Ireland for 40+ years, they were still introduced as the Blow-in. Ireland invented flavoured crisps, Whiskey, and Binaural Stethoscopes, which all Doctors still use! Sadly Tayto Park is no more, they lost the licence to use that name, so from 1st January 2023 its been known as Emerald Park. I grew up in Ireland and moved to Essex, now in Kent.

The old church grounds are pre reformation churches and abbeys, small abbeys in the west that were closed during the Henry 8th period. Since most people didn’t convert, nearly none there was no use for them. After catholic emancipation in the early 1800s from about 1830 Catholic Church’s were allowed again and they were rebuilt in new French neo gothic style, the people having long forgotten the previous styles.

@@OldHikingGeezer-lp7bu And welcome to Ireland of course. Like all english people who move here, they often become more Irish than the Irish. You have to learn to allow for ups and downs and navigate through the blarney at times, especially in business matters in the west in particular, you might find it very odd at times, but be yourself and everyone will understand. It's ok to demand precision and asking people to get to the point, trades men and the like will not be precise about time and cost at times, but it is a type of patter in the language and culture and you have to search for the point. And you will be believing in the fairies in no time, they were here before us, no question.

My deer old english friend . Where you not taught way back in your youth in your home country of centuries of oppression by our neighbours? Does ..for example..the name Oliver Cromwell not ring a bell with you ?
It was not only under his rule, that worship by catholic rule was severely punished and on top of it churches , cathedrals and chapples preaching the catholic faith got ransacked by the invaders from the other side of the Irish sea ... Your love for Ireland 🇮🇪 is highly appreciated, but please educate yourself about our never trouble free history .

I am well aware of the troubled history between my country of birth and Ireland. I am not proud of what was inflicted on this lovely country. A few things to bear in mind - I didn’t choose where I was born and was a great supporter of Mo Moslem and her tremendous selfless efforts to bring peace. Also, I was twice a victim of the troubles. Once when I was in Kings Cross underground station when it was bombed and later in the Bishopsgate bombing. Do I feel any animosity? No, just understanding. For most of the troubles I was too young to have a say. I love Ireland and its people but I can no more be held responsible for what happened than my German wife can be responsible for the London blitz. We have to live as peacefully as possible and, yes, I don’t know everything about the persecutions but I am trying to learn. Let us look to the future whilst learning lessons from the past and not let such terrible time happen again

My "dear english friend " was in no way ment disrespectful ..the opposite is what I had in mind ...I just wanted to clarify ,that ransacked monasteries, friaries, nunneries or other violently tumbled sacral structures are not connected to the the horrendous pain and suffering the famine brought over this country . My request to you to make yourself aware of the consequences of 700 years of occupational rule is aswell is not ment in a derogatory way . I think it is a normal procedure ,that anybody who settles in a new country, should have the courtesy to get familiar with the history of the country( and the people )he or she chose to be their new home( and neighbours ).
On top of it : in no way would I think, that you or your dear wife could be or should be held responsible for the wrong doings of the governments of the countries of your origin .
My wish for you is , that you might be able to build a happy life in Ireland 🇮🇪.

What an awesome video. I’m so glad that you love our country so much. I hope also that you found the much vaunted hatred of the Irish for England is purely for their national sports teams. It’s mostly jealousy. There’s not much difference between us. I’ve never met an English person I didn’t really like.
