    The One Ring is a wonderful, immersive RPG experience by Cubicle7 that I recommend even if it's only for a little lonely fun.

    I've been looking into The One Ring for a while now. It looks like a really well-built ttrpg that remains faithful to Tolkien's original works and their themes. Hell, the Power of Friendship is pretty much a game mechanic. I can't wait to run a game of this for my group of RPG friends. (please have mercy, schedule gods). Thanks for the video! Learning a game system from scratch is intimidating so thanks for breaking it down for us.

      @@MichaelPoley Please do. Watched this today and really enjoyed your style, also. It's a good day when I find the right mix of LotR, RPG, and a maker with a mature, calm style.

    Another idea, that can also utilize the game's system and scenario information, as a sort of alternative story that happens during the Lord of the Rings book trilogy.
    Instead of making a true "spin-off", you can make campaigns that happens while Frodo is carrying the One Ring (with the full fellowship with him) and play out events that doesn't intervene with the Fellowship's main quest.
    One campaign idea would be the PCs helping a Durin's descendant and his fellows to retake of the mines of Moria, which would take place after the Fellowship went through there. Not a full combat mission, it would also involve a lot of exploration and some investigation on shadowy things that lurk in the depths of Moria.
    Another would be of a similar design, but with Mirkwood elves that want to retake Mirkwood from the Naz-gul of Dol Guldur and his army. Also something that can't be taken head on, so explorations, investigations and also some social struggle because most of the elves there (on the southern border) would be bent on keeping an eye on the enemy from afar and only some NPCs would be hopeful to actually take their forest back.
    Another would be about a nomadic tribe that flew from Angmar and are now conquering and spreading through the northern regions of Middle-Earth. The Rangers of the North would be in a moral dilemma of how to deal with these invaders since they know they are in a way victims of Sauron's forces in Angmar. The PCs would at some point discover that there is a former Sauron's disciple at Angmar who is using his learnt Dark Arts to poison the minds of the tribes that still reside in southern Angmar. He is a far descendant of a cult of numenorians who practiced the "Dark Arts" in secret during the 2nd Age and inherited their knowledge. By the final part of the campaign, they'd discover that this villain resides in a hideout where he conducts his sorcery. The place would be somewhat deep in western Angmar, but not cross the middle-upper Angmar, so they wouldn't get too close to the Witch King's castle or any of his fortresses.

    I was first introduced to this game as a player in 2013-2014. The game reignited my passion for Middle-Earth. Now I am running my own set of players through the Darkening of Mirkwood, going on for about half a year since last fall. It's been a great ride, and with the new announcement of a 2nd Edition I hope for more great things from C7.

    I thiiink that this happens to be a success video, and I would really appreciate more One Ring RPG content. You are bound to receive more attention as Lord of the Rings becomes more relevant again with the new Amazon show.

    I have about the same experience. I haven't played RPGs since my teens, but I had a number of games. The problem with games based on a book, movie or similar was that you were constantly hampered by the world and the story that was already written. "Now I have a great idea for an adventure, but does it fit into Tolkien's world? Where in the timeline might this fit or where in Middle-earth might this plot fit. Uh, I don't care, we'll play D&D instead". But this game has already done the background check, makes it easier for the gamemaster.

    Great Video! The One Ring is a fantastic game the 2nd edition is on KS right now which is good since all the Cubicle 7 books are out of print. I started running two campaigns that fell apart years ago, but the latest, started summer of 2019 is going great. It was with a group that does one-shots but they loved the game so much it is a recurring game we play. I even started co-GMing the Darkening of the Mirkwood. Like you mentioned all the books are very well done. The art is fantastic and the writing very well done. The good thing about having a Co-GM is that I get to play, and my go GM is a great GM. I read the LOTR books right before the Movies came out and I am glad I did. My family re-watch the Extended Special editions every 6 months and we love watching them every time. Great Game I am looking forward to the 2nd edition. Seems like they streamlined the rules and glad that new people to the game can actually get a hold of the rulebooks. Great Job!!!

    Very good video with a quite unique style, you should do some more on others rpg.
    And yes, I have discovered this game 3 months ago, and realised that the rpg universe had to wait almost 40 years to have a game which really gives the exact flavour of Tolkien's books. This game is a master piece.

    11:00+ section here roughly is really cool, along with the theater of the mind as well.
    D&D Hexcrawling is like what you're saying in this section, but most D&D adventures or campaigns simply do away with that and that's a real shame.
    Great vid. Seems like a system though that would be quite a hard entry for players coming from other systems for sure.

    How are you getting on with the game? I ran a few sessions a couple of years ago and I'm preparing to start a campaign next month at the moment.

  • @Carpetslipper
    @Carpetslipper Před 4 lety +1

    It’s funny the intimidation thing. The rule book does try to encourage not to be bound by the books and to deviate from canon if you wish. As it states, The histories may be wrong. I know what you mean though, I love Tolkien and have good familiarity with it and there can be a bit of that feeling of worrying about being consistent with the histories!
    That said, the system is immersive. I also find it rules pretty easy. I say this compared with d and 5e which I play and enjoy as a player not the LM/GM. I think years of familiarity of d and d help folks get over the learning curves.
    It is a very narrative driven game. Not a hack and slash. I have seen some people who love the combat some who hate it. I think you will like it if you get on with a more narrative nature but not so if you play combat with grids etc. It may the. Seem a bit light. Again, it suites us though and provides good flavour and yomps on nicely.
    Excellent assessment and overview this. Well done and thanks.

    Nice video. Many of the unique game qualities of TOR are ported into the D&D basics through the product Adventures in Middle-earth. I would be curious how much of the Tolkien book feel present in TOR translates to D&D 5e using Adventures...

    Looking at getting into TOR for Middle-Earth but seriously, how hard are the TOR rules to learn as a brand new Loremaster that has NEVER played anything similar to these rules?

    • @MRdaBakkle
      @MRdaBakkle Před 5 lety +1

      The system is pretty rules lite but there are enough subsytems and knobs and bits that require the LM to have read through the Core Book and understand the rules. In my opinion the rules are quite simple to understand once read. An LM can run a session with just the Core Book although other books will be very helpful.

    Ty for the vid,I just recently ordered one ring 2e. For my 111yth b-day😂😂😂.I think the reason that nothing has been reconned is due to the Tolkien estate hasn't sold out.hope they never will.if there was ever a Tolkien god,not of the Tolkien estate,that started dictating what I can and cannot do in my game.i would likely do what I want ANYWAY.im actually switching to one ring for this reason.there was a d&d god that was not gygax,telling me how to run my games.the same one that screwed up star wars by the way,Darth Mickey can take a long walk off a short pier.well I've decided to go back to the source,there would never have been a d&d ,if not for Tolkien. and,the last straw for me was "half races are racist"that's a real thing from wizards of the coast now.i won't have it.i would play in middle earth until the end of time.than spend one more second in some sanitized rules lawyered propaganda.what ever happened to just playing the game,used to get into RPGs to get AWAY from agendas.hope your campaign is going good.later.
