  • Welcome to episode #31 of our Franchise Mode series with the Vancouver Canucks on NHL 24! Coming off of our second Stanley Cup through our eight seasons with the Canucks, we enter the 2031 offseason with a goal we didn't have the last time: to see this core take the next step to becoming a dynasty. Leave a comment with any and all of your suggestions and I'll do my best to incorporate them into the next episode! :)
    Canucks Google Sheet: docs.google.co...
    The Vancouver Canucks are a franchise that have been through decades of misfortune, mismanagement, and, really, just pure disappointment. With nothing to show but three Stanley Cup Final losses in their 50+ years in the NHL, the Canucks are on the brink of returning to an all-time low as they have only made the postseason twice in the last decade, have one of the shallowest prospect pools in the league, and are easily in one of the worst salary cap situations. With no where else to turn, Canucks ownership has made a call to GM Data and his team of Assistant GMs to do the impossible: fix the unfixable team.

    Really good draft, lots of good potential players for the future. I agree on all of the re-signings, and although I’m a bit dissapointed we had all that money to spend but no roster spots to fit players, I still like our lineup going into 2031-32. In the end I’m also glad we kept hanifin over a free agent as well, and the jones and pettersson extensions are very fair. This offseason was relatively easy with the players we had to resign but next year will be a puzzle with limited cap space - pettersson and jones are done but, lundqvist, dobson and more will be looking for big money long term. I doubt this team will miss the playoffs but if we are around .500 around the deadline it would be worth considering selling and moving some money to make sure we can keep our core. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. And you remembered to set the draft quality this time 😂
    I think montoya and tyupkin get extended looks on the third line to foster their growth, and I’m excited to see what beaulieu can do, his stats are actually good for an enforcer, and I would love to keep him around if his penalty minutes aren’t too bad. Also, ardvisson might need to see some nhl time this season to see if he’s for real - that 98 passing is wild. Muller should get a look at the backup role but I wouldn’t mind trading him and getting a more experienced 1b since we have the money.
    Excited for the season - start of a dynasty coming up! See you in the preseason and go nucks.

      Thanks Gaben! Glad you enjoyed the offseason and the decisions that were made. Now if only we could've found a way that made sense to spend $10M+ for this next year! 😂 Roger that on our potential direction for the season depending on how things look by the halfway-ish point.
      Agreed on the prospect thoughts. At this point, Sydor probably stays unsigned and Brown/Kelly may never make it while Domingues is up in the air. The ones I'm most confident about/interested in are Montoya and Tyupkin who will get their third line looks, as well as Beaulieu who can enjoy life on the 4th. Muller will get his chance as back-up and possibly be in the conversation to take over from Jones in the future, too. This is a big chance for him with a strong pipeline coming up. Arvidsson is the tough one as we definitely want to use that 98 passing to our advantage! I'd almost try him as the PP2 QB 👀 Thanks as always for all of your thoughts and looking forward to kicking off a true Cup defense! :)

    I think you gotta go long term ASAP with Lundqvist. He's earned it. Dobson I'd maybe wait to sign, I can't see his ask increasing that much, but it could drop. I think it's definitely worth while trying the expirement of Markstrom 1C, and Pettersson 2C with 1pp and 1pk units. Ratu has got to stay winger, he just can't cut it as center with that faceoff stat. Buillon try on the 2nd pair. 15-20 game trial perhaps? I know that's a bit of a longer trial but we just have to know if it'll work

    • @Data782
      @Data782  Před 3 měsíci

      Roger that! The AGMs seem to agree that Lundqvist should be signed now, but the question will be whether we go 4 years to keep him as an RFA, or go 8 years and get a cheaper AAV on him in years 5-8 of the contract. My FM brain says 4 but I think realism tells me 8 after he scored 50 in his sophomore season. And I fully agree on Dobson! I'd be alright signing him around that AAV but no need to rush because I can't see it getting much higher so I think it's worth the gamble to see if it'll come down a little. We need to keep in mind that he's been a 40-50-ish point guy so we can't give him 70+ point money just yet.
      For the lineup, I like the 1C/PP2/PK2 Markstrom v. 2C/PP1/PK1 EP40 idea. We'll give it a go and see what the results look like after 15-20 games. Bouillon is the tough one as Pierro-Zabotel is really calling to me, but JPZ is an RFA who we can wait a liiiiiiittle on if we want to try Bouillon at LD2 to start the season. He's been solid enough for a couple of years so, before we cut him loose due to lack of growth, I wouldn't mind seeing how he does in a larger role. Thanks for all of your thoughts and we'll see you at the starting line for our Cup defense! :)

    @louismallard9811 Před 3 měsíci +2

    You got me back on the Pierro-Zabottel train… so you know ehat I’m about to say… Flip Boullion for JPZ why ? You have 3 offensive defenceman and Boullion’s growth isn’t what you where hoping for even losing is original X-Factor. Thing is you don’t have JPZ fully scouted for is line fit but 3 bars at top 4 D-lines plus all PK lines looks solid but I would try to fully scout him if possible before making any move on him. Be careful tho because he’s asking a lot of money for a 82 overall with Lundqvist expiring, but he does have the potential to grow.

    • @Data782
      @Data782  Před 3 měsíci +2

      I thought you might be! 👀 Part of me doesn't feel right to think about giving up on Bouillon after just two seasons, but another part of me knows that him ever growing to 85+ OVR might be impossible. I think we could swing the money as he'd replace the $$ value of Hanifin next season when money will be tighter, but the bigger question may be the line fit. I'm confident that he'd fit well enough or at least better than Bouillon who doesn't fit in the top 4, but it's always a concern. Thanks Louis, we'll see what we can do in the next one! ;)

    17:43 never understood how the auto pins are always about 5 players above of where you are picking.. if you have 27 they pin 23 24 25 ... it's fine for the first round, easy to double check, but gets very annoying when it's higher picks and you can't just check easily where you actually pick😊

    • @Data782

  • @CheatingHeel
    @CheatingHeel Před 3 měsíci +2

    We should really try to have Markstrom as 1C is we want to push his overall higher. Lundqvist is a lock on the 1st line so I'd try Raty, Lekky and Tippett as the 3rd player on the line and see what mix is best for chemistry on the the 2 lines.
    At this point, we might as well trade Bouillon for a center prospect. We have a lot of options to take his spot and we need to see growth from our prospects if we are to replace Hanifin, Hronek and maybe Dobson soon. Bouillon is only slowing someone else's development by taking top minutes and not doing any growth himself. I'd try Arvidsson with Dobson and keep the 3rd pair as is. We should give Lebedev a couple of games here and there, rotating him with Arvidsson and Wallace. If the later 2 can play 65 to 70 games each, it would give Lebedev 20 to 30 games and, hopefully, they all see a bit of growth prior to next season. Nurturing our prospects and giving them the chance to grow is going to be a must, especially with dmen $ being so crazy going forward.
    As for the AHL goalies, might as well trade the oldest of them as he's the one with less room/time to grow.
    We have a very talented team and we could win it all again but we also need to keep an eye on the future and start to manage the icetime of the older players so the next generation can florish.
    Go 'Nucks

    • @Data782
      @Data782  Před 3 měsíci

      Agreed. As great as EP40 has been at different moments in our FM (especially coming off of the Conn Smythe), we need to at least take a look at getting Markstrom at 1C to push for 20:00+ TOI per night. A 1C/PP2/4PP1/PK2/etc. kind of mix to bump the TOI but still keep EP40 happy might be how we start the season before we reevaluate.
      Now for the defense.. Trading Bouillon wouldn't be the craziest thing to do, and yes we need more C in our pipeline, but I'm not sure if I like any of our other defensemen to play in the top 4 right now unless Hanifin goes back to that spot permanently for this season. And we do have Perezhogin at C in our system which is better than nothing. I gotta say that Pierro-Zabotel replacing Bouillon at LD2 is a tempting option. However, it would add to the mini-logjam on the blue line right now. Tough call.
      Well said! Coming off of a Cup, we're still as strong as ever BUT, as you said, to truly flourish (and become a dynasty), we need to keep an eye on growing the players who will be here the longest. Thanks for all of your thoughts on this upcoming season and we'll see you at the starting line!

    First of all, SPOILERS...
    Secondly, I'd like to think Podkolzin has earned the letter. Dare I even say the Captaincy. If you'd allow me to argument for just a moment. When you think of a Captain you think of leading the team to a win, performing in clutch moments, maintaining control all while being the model of excellence. But like most things, there are deeper layers to it. I call it the 3 C's of Captain-Cy; Caring, Courageous and Consistent.
    CARING - With an undeniable passion for the game, competing and their teammates, great captains put the success of the team over their own needs while caring for the well-being of each teammate.
    COURAGEOUS - Putting trust in your teammates and coaches while willing to hold those accountable to continue their hard work and preparation.
    CONSISTENT - This doesn't strictly pertain to point-scoring; you need to give all of yourself all the time. Giving all you have means not taking the shortcuts and being a good communicator! [Unlocked hidden 4th C] Whether it's through your actions or your vocal chords, always be communicating with your team.
    Once a Captain has done all of these seamlessly you get the final C, credibility.
    Podkolzin is there every night in mind, body and spirit. No matter what line he plays on, he plays his heart out. He's certainly a fan-favourite and I think the fans would be thrilled for Pod when the time comes.
    Wow. And that was just the first few minutes of the episode...
    I like the lines as is and I'm excited for the year to begin! Lundy on the 1st line at a 90, Montoya's 94 stick-checking is nothing to gloss over, and Pod's Born Leader X-Factor. I bow *bows* to you, sir. Please see above for a few reasons why Podkolzin should wear the "C" instead of an "A", although an "A" is certainly welcomed and wouldn't be turned down. And maybe the next time a "C" is announced (no matter the player) would be at puck-drop by none other than Little Timmy, at preferrably the home-opener.
    I vote signing Lundqvist sooner rather than later. If he has a great year, like a career-high, he could ask $13m if not more.
    And lastly, we should also have a look at P. Dorofeyev in Toronto as an 83 Top 9 as possibly someone to keep an eye on and target later if need be.
    Until next time, Mighty Joe Maple ... signing off!

    • @Data782
      @Data782  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I love the Podkolzin love!! 🤩🤩 His case is kind of like a Gallagher at one time in Montreal. Although he continues to show incredible leadership, the one wearing the C is the one who previous management saw as the greatest investment and, although Podkolzin makes a great case for himself year after year, it'd be hard to strip Hughes of what he's had for close to a decade now. That being said, it's still great to think that he has an A and the Born Leader X-Factor!
      Roger that on Lundqvist. I know he might end of wanting more if we wait, but having him as an RFA is also a plus as we could wait him out a little. At the same time, is that what we want for our top goal scorer? Probably not so getting the contract done ASAP probably makes the most sense. And noted on Dorofeyev! Thanks as always for the detail in your thoughts, much love, and see you at the starting line for our Cup defense! :)

    • @MightyJoeMaple
      @MightyJoeMaple Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@Data782 I completely agree on not just stripping Hughes of the C. I just meant when the time comes. Hughes is our C through and through. The Pod Captaincy is more like “Hey, Hughes is retiring/gone, and we know you’re getting up there in age so we’d like to give you the C in your final 1-2 seasons” kind of thing. Hughes is 2 years older.

    39:53 I don't think that is the glitch, it's that whole.. I don't wanna sign with you thing.. I think that is more of the glitch, that eventually no one EVER wants to resign.. even for a 3 time Stanley cup team..

    • @Data782
      @Data782  Před 3 měsíci

      I think this one comes down to a glitch or just a bad system, whatever you wanna call it. It can't be that EVERY RFA wants 1x$1.2M but 2x$0.8M at a certain age/level of experience

  • @GenZMcKenzie
    @GenZMcKenzie Před 3 měsíci

    I think the defense could look like this:
    1st D: Hughes-Dobson
    2nd D: Bouillon-Hronek
    3rd D: Hanifin-Wallace
    Depth D: Arvidsson and Lebedev
    I think Dobson should play with Hughes because Dobson was elite last season and could be potentially more elite with more ice time. Also, Hronek is regressing and could settle nicely into a 2nd pair role like years past. Also, Hughes and Dobson have a +4 chemsistry boost together, which could positively affect their play, while Hughes with Hronek has 0. Bouillon has had good stats despite his relatively low overall and is still young enough to grow with enough ice time, unlike Arvidsson and Lebedev.
    For the AHL, I think you should trade McIsaac and Zubov, sign unsigned prospects Alexandrov (for top 4 D) and Arcobello (for 3rd line), and move Bhowmik to 1st line. I think these moves could help the prospects put up good production, which would lead to their overall increasing. Hickman from the Kings is an interesting possibility for a trade acquisition. Maybe we could trade some permutation of Brown, Kelly, future picks, and the aforementioned McIsaac and Zubov to get him.
    I think you should sign Lundqvist NOW to a $9.775M X 4 deal because I think he will have a great year and want even more money as the season goes on.

    • @Data782
      @Data782  Před 3 měsíci

      I hear what you're saying! I think Hughes/Dobson will have to be a pair that we eventually explore as Hronek ages, but I gotta say I think the season has to start with Hughes and Dobson separated. With the numbers that they put up last year and the track record of how Hughes struggles when paired with another offensive-type defenseman, I think we want to leave it as is until we're forced into further exploration. That being said, your logic is sound and I'm sure we'll try out that pair soon - but to start the year I think we continue from where we left off.
      The AHL trades make sense but I'll have to double check what positions are available in the lineup if we sign any of our currently unsigned prospects. And, I'll check what our outgoing value could equal and if that'd be enough to consider Hickman! For Lundqvist, I think we sign him now but we'll need to figure out what makes the most sense - 4 years to stay as an RFA or 8 years to try and get him at a lower AAV in years 5-8. I'll go back over the numbers. Thanks for all of your thoughts and we'll see you at the start of season! :)
