The Vrod Has One Simple Trick For All Power Upgrades

  • Vrod motorcycles make power but trying to add more can be money spent for no gain if you miss one little detail. Even doing everything right with a tune can cost you power if you don't go topless. The air box on the Vrod is a major choke point for these engines, going topless can mean the difference between money wasted or well spent. It really doesn't take much to get some very nice gains on a Vrod, in a lot of cases exhaust, tuner, and some air box modification is the ticket.

    Do you think a set of cams is worth the money or just exhaust and tuner is more than enough?

    • @parkeslife4323
      @parkeslife4323 Před 2 lety +9

      Exhaust, tuner AND pulley gearing upgrade. Doing a pulley upgrade like 2 teeth up on rear and 2 teeth down on front keeps the wheel in the same spot, gives incredible bang for buck and you don't have to enter the engine. Sure it means a few more rpm, but the torque increase is awesome. This goes for ANY bike.

    • @vernlochtefeld1626
      @vernlochtefeld1626 Před 2 lety

      HD went tall on the M8 softails for emissions. 2.79 final drive ratio. Next rear tire change go to a plus 4 ie 70 tooth pulley. This changes your final drive ratio to 3.00-1. Acceleration AND top speed will improve no other changes. That’s Assuming a tuner has removed your speed limiter and raised your rpm limit.

    Thank you for the awesome advice I recently bought a 2006 1130 v-Rod for my 65th birthday I haven't had a bike in 40 years and all I can say is the V-Rod is one AWESOME MACHINE and if you have a need for speed it will put a smile on your face every time you twist the throttle and you can't putt around on a bike like that you crave that grin again and again,

  • @jamessouthworth1699
    @jamessouthworth1699 Před 2 lety +11

    I remember when the V-Rod came out and I actually liked the look of the bike and didn't mind the water cooling. It was the little tank under the seat with a fuel pump and how complicated the service is on this bike that turned me off to them. They're probably great for the guy who lets the dealer do all his service but for a guy like me who does his own it's not the bike for me. Hats off to you for tackling the service on one of these. You're a good son.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  Před 2 lety +5

      They aren't hard to work on it's just the tear down to get to everything which can be a pain. Valve adjustments aren't too bad, you just have to lower the motor down, that gets expensive if you're paying to have it done.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  Před 2 lety +2

      Not yet lol, dealers will still work on them. Most dealers won't work on a Evo and in some cases a TC 88 anymore. Some dealers have a 10 year policy and they won't work on anything over 10 years old.

    Thanks, I've never heard that mentioned anywhere else, surprisingly. Some bikes you leave a clip off the lid and it dogs out. So I wouldn't have probably made that a consideration in getting her to open up. I think I haven't sought to make performance upgrades yet because of that whole futility thing, "the thousand you spend for the few extra horses," really isn't that noticeable. And I would have been right because I would have done it lid on. Seeing you're dyno numbers affected like that gives me that "ah haa" moment where i'm simultaneously exited that there's a key to getting hp, and pissed this is the first I'm hearing of it. Good info bro, had considered selling mine l8ly, for this very reason. Always did think the way that lid was shaped didn't get air to it. Especially after you stuff it a box packed full of wires You want to believe HD knows what they're doing building bikes and would never intentionally steal HP from its faithful followers. That would be a.........awwwe, GDHD!

    Another trick concerning the airbox mod (besides a Screaming Eagle air filter), I did more than just losing the top: I cut & trimmed the lower to the filter lip, relocated the ATI sensor to the filter lid, made a battery terminal quick release (simular to forklifts), and replaced the 10 side cover screws (Muscle) with quick release pins and JB Welded brass collors in the airbox cover to solve the 20 minute

    What i did on Vrod cvo 2006: race ported heads, stage II cams, destroyer throttebody, destroyer injectors, 5bar fuel pump, 5bar fuel regulator, destroyer headbolts(13mm), screamin eagle racetuner(dynotuned by an expert), kn airfilter, removed top of airfilter box(topless), engine brace kit, slipper clutch, VH 2 into one exhaust , raise speedlimit from 9000 to 10500. That did pump the bike up from 125hp to 165hp, on rear wheel 138,5hp. there is a lot of power hidden in the screamin eagle 1250 motor , you just have to know where and how to release them. Important: USE stock velocitystacks drilled out to 58mm(make sure its smooth between VC and TB , short velocitystaks dont work well. So over to the cost in $$ , is it worth it in my book its not, but anyway if you who reads this still thinking about it Fitzgerald Motorsports in Ohio (Scott Fitzgerald) is the man to ask. I’ve been riding Vrods nearly 20 years and my first one was a 04B. I just got a 08D last month. I’ve done all sorts of things to and with these bikes, I even put a turbo on a couple of them. I have a 13F that I traded my 12F for simply because my MOS in the army was 13F. I put one of those 26T pulleys on it and it is hands down one of my favorite performance mods for the price. We lose a smidge on the top, but acceleration from 0-100mph is wicked. Dropping a gear and banging past traffic has never been more fun.

    NGK Iridium plugs & hotter coils almost as much. Tab Performance slipons without baffles; no noticeable difference.
    But one inexpensive upgrade made a HUGE difference from mid-high rpm was a $15.00 Catch Can I bought off ebay (w/vacuum lines, zipties & special clamp) to bypass that hot oily gas away from the intake: I must have gained at least 5 hp! (plus my Bike runs smoother now)

    Happy Thanksgiving Foo! Destroyer upgrades aren’t beneficial to a street driven Vrod simply because it lacks the stroke and compression, let alone lighter flywheel which puts 14.0:1 Compression ratio right at home with the Destroyer. Heads, cylinder liners, cylinders even the engine cases were altered for this beast. The transmission was also built differently. As close as they are they couldn’t be further apart. Any scoot engineered including the Buell, Eric did his best to give you an engine that has been built to its most efficient potential. The power vision tuner is a pain in the ass. Apparently the spark coils in the Vrod give off so much electromagnetic feedback that they actually interfere with the tuning process causing the power vision to experience software errors and freezes. Needs to constantly be reset which is not something you want to do while riding. Maybe mine is just more sensitive than others but it seems to be a fairly common issue from things I’ve seen on forums.
    Edit: it is still usable and still works even with the freezing. Will just take you a bit longer. Just be prepared to pull over any time it freezes to reset the unit. When it does freeze the progress is at least not lost. After you reset the auto tune it will continue where it left off. I’m riding a 2016 Vrod Muscle.

      The Power Vision is the best one out there other than a Thunder Max for the Vrod. For the Vrod a K&N air filter in the air box and a Power Vision is about the best it gets for the Vrod. You can run the air box topless and pick up some more power there. Best deal on a Power Vision out there is Fuel Moto, you tell them your setup on the bike when you order and they preload a map based on your specs to the unit. All you have to do is flash it and you're good to go, maybe run some auto tune sessions to dial it in if need be.

      That's one of the quickest way to spend 5 grand, but if you think about it you spend that much getting into the motor. A turbo is basically bolt on and you get as much if not more power and reliably too.
