    Johnson Controls makes most of the batteries , one important thing to check when buying a new battery is how long it sat on the shelf before you bought it ,if it is older than 3 months tell them you want a newer one or go someplace else as lead acid batteries age faster unused on the shelf than when in use ,if it sat for longer it will still work fine but will not last nearly as long as one that has a newer date code. With the date code the first number is the month then the year but sometimes they use a letter instead of a number with A for January to L for December and it is on the side of the battery not the sticker sometimes on the top where they mark off when you got it.

    I love the “glazed” line! I’m pretty sure every serpentine belt that runs it’s back side over an idler or tensioner (which would be all of them) has that shiny (glazed) look. I love to sit in the waiting room and listen to dealership service writers come out and sell people insanely unnecessary and expensive repairs. I was at the Honda dealership for the airbag recall on my wife’s CRV and an older retired couple with a two year old Honda minivan was sold a $1500 brake job with new rotors all the way around an new calipers. I really wanted to jump up and yell bull**** but I stayed out of it because I hadn’t seen the vehicle but it is pretty unlikely that type of customer could have driven that thing enough to need that much work in such a short time.

    The "in-tank additive" is made by 3M and is literally just gasoline with a tiny bit of extra detergent. Totally worthless. However, the pressurized "fuel injector cleaner" absolutely works as it was formulated and patented by Toyota for Toyota. I recommend it as a diy job. The cans are cheap but the fuel rail kit is expensive but it's a one time expense. Batteries are supplied by interstate but manufactured by Johnson Controls. They make 80% of all lead acid batteries. However, the batteries are made to the manufacture's specs. In the case of Toyota, JC uses the same external case and bus bars as all the other batteries, however, JC uses Toyota's patented lead plate design that gives slightly higher reliability and real CCAs.

    First of all, your channel is a Godsend! I just discovered it and wish I had subscribed much sooner!
    I just bought a 2014 Avalon Hybrid after falling in love with the Toyota hybrid system on my wife’s 2009 Highlander Hybrid. Both cars are high miles (over 200k on the Highlander and 160k on the Avalon). I’m doing most of my own maintenance and the Highlander has been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned so far. My 04 Acura TL that just got traded for the Avalon paled in comparison.
    I just finished this 5 part series and found it so helpful in putting together a maintenance plan for both cars! One suggestion I had would be a video on timing belt service. I know that’s not as DIY as some other things but it’s something I think a lot of people aren’t aware of as a maintenance item in V6 engines.
    Thanks for all the work you put into these videos, you’ve earned a subscriber for life here!

      As is so often the case for so many once you realize/learn that most Toyota Dealerships are absolutely horrific ripoffs and Liars.
      When I bought my brand new 06 Tundra DC Ltd 09/2005, I had already experienced their unsavory ways from my previous Lemon 2002 Ltd.
      The new one wasn't a total lemon but over the 1st few years I learned it also was built with much inferiority.
      But doing my own maintenance and larger repairs at least assured me I was not getting ripped off and the jobs were done right.

    When considering how long to keep your battery and serpentine belt, I always factor in the typical cost of a tow, the likelihood that you're going to get stranded somewhere, and other inconvenience costs. When you add all that up, it usually makes sense to replace your battery and serpentine belt before the end of their useful life. A lot of people think I'm crazy for replacing stuff that isn't broke, but there is a lot to be said for scheduling stuff like this when it is convenient to you, and you're not in an emergency situation where you have little choice.
    Some of those pro-rated battery guarantees aren't as good as they seem, so you need to factor that into your decision as to when to replace an old battery. Some places will give you the pro-rated refund with no questions asked, while others are required to put it on their charging/discharging test system to make sure the problem isn't with your alternator. That can be rather inconvenient in an emergency situation.
    Another problem with pro-rated battery refunds, is that some places will indeed give you what you're owed, but only toward the cost of one of their new batteries, and they'll only warranty the new battery for as long as the remaining warranty on your old battery. For example, suppose your 3 year pro-rated battery that cost you $150 dies after 2 and a half years. So after running a full charge/discharge test, the seller gives you $25 credit to buy a new battery. No big surprise there, and on the surface it seems like you should take the offer. But if that new battery dies after six months, depending on the store policy, you could be left with no warranty whatsoever on your (almost) NEW six month old replacement battery. That kind of thing doesn't happen often, but when it does, a lot of customers get furious.

    • @williamfrench9973
      @williamfrench9973 Před rokem +2

      I 100% agree with you. I always replace my battery at or slightly before the warranty period is up. A single tow can easily cost more than the battery. Same with drive belts. I go one step further… at 10ish years (yes, I keep my cars a long time) I replace every belt and clamp in the cooling system, along with the thermostat and, depending upon the model maybe even the water pump. I drive my car for work and I simply cannot afford break-downs so I follow the model of airplane maintenance. Since I do the work myself, I can get all the parts for that for ~200-300$ including fluids. Money well spent in my book.

    Hey love your channel and your experienced advice, I've learned a good amount. I got to see a tour of a battery factory and learned this:
    Yes many automotive batteries may be made at the same factory but to very different specifications and levels of quality! According to the brand's specifications there are good ones and not so good. So for example, a Walmart "Ever Start" battery is a much lower quality than a Interstate, Delco or Motorcraft . There are many others with levels of quality.

    Thanks for the throttle body cleaning interval AMD... was thinking of going on a 50k TB cleaning interval as my Honda finally would start for a sec and then die at around 139k (TB was never cleaned previously). It put out a P2101 code shortly afterward - TB actuator malfunction. Initially thought the TB actuator motor went bad, but took it out and cleaned out the gunk, and no issues for over a year now.

      Thank you! I’m glad I could help! The 130k mile service is essentially a 10,000 mile service so you shouldn’t expect more than an oil change and tire rotation and a general inspection. If it needs anything else that’s not making sense you’re welcome to ask any questions you have. It’s my pleasure to help my viewers with any way I can.

    I took my car to my dealer for 160km (100K mi) service. They recommended replacing the sparks plugs, injection cleaning, and throttle body cleaning. All never been done before. Going in, my car drove fine and mileage was as good as day one. I thought I was scammed but now I feel better after watching your video. They were good preventive maintenance. I do drive in extreme cold half of the year, short trips and very few highway trips. Your comment about Toyota battery is true. I owned several Toyota over the years and the batteries rarely lasted beyond 5 years. Thank you for making this video.

    I actually had a good experience with "Cataclean" which is an additive that got rid of a P0420 CEL I had. I don't know if the EFI Toyota additive is supposed to do the same, but it sure beats replacing the catalytic converter.

    9:40 Batteries - I had bought a Interstate Mega-Tron for my 2011 Toyota Camry LE . And I believe it was still 5 years later that it was in very good condition . As I had tested it with a battery tester you connect to the terminals . Though I had added distilled water twice during this time . Car was declared total in Sept of last year . I have no bought a 2020 Toyota Camry LE from Avis Car Sales .

    Thank you very much for a very assuring and good insight on how we can keep our cars last. I have always been a Toyota nut, until recently when I decided to do with the newer Hondas. I have owned both brands and others and these are the only 2 brands I would consider to own. I only find Toyota dealerships anywhere take advantage of the loyal Toyota owners by over pricing or not willing to negotiate price. But, maybe, my next purchase will be back to Toyota. We still have a 2014 Toyota Venza and a 2011 Camry left in the family that I have passed on to our youngest daughter and the Camry to a niece.

    Great videos man, thank you for making them. Questions, dual-port injection in some Toyotas and Lexus, will it require the so-called "Italian tune-up" and or the dealer service? Correct me if I'm wrong, I was under the impression that as long as you use "top tier" types of gasoline, it'll clean up the valves and all that. Thanks in advance.

    • @TheCarCareNut
      @TheCarCareNut  Před 3 lety +4

      Thank you for watching! The dual injection system Toyota used also called D4S will not carbon up the valves like direct injection only engines. An Italian tune up every once in a while isn’t a bad idea. The dealer service could work and is beneficial if you drive short trips very frequently.

      On a whole different brand... When Volvo rolled out the 5 cylinder engines on the 850 model, the valve stem clearances were pretty close. It was very common for people who never went on the freeway to experience misfires, hard starting, and similar problems. (I had a Volvo at the time [shudder] and saw a lot of this on the Volvo forums.) An Italian tune-up would fix them right up.

    I checked out test results on tires, and the closest tires to the Michelin fuel savers turned out to be the GeneralAltima’s R43v tires. I used them all summer and noticed no change of gas mileage, and the traction is equivalent to the Michelins. Great tires, and affordable!

    Toyota is one of the four founding members of the Top Tier consortium. I only use non-top tier brands if there is literally nothing else available in the remaining range. There are lots of low-price top tier brands: see www.toptiergas.com/licensed-brands/
    I had a Nissan 300ZX manual transmission that developed a horrible clutch judder. I monkeyed with it for months and decided to give a top tier brand a try. Within a hundred miles it was smooth as could be. I've recommended top tier gas to friends who had clutch judder and in all but one case that fixed it. In the remaining case the springs in the clutch disk were trying to pop out (a common Honda problem).
