  • Today we are starting the tiny home inside our pole barn so that we won't be living in a trailer during our entire build. The goal today is to get the exterior walls framed on this small sized barndominium.

    We built our 4th home in the last 20 feet of our 40x80 shop . We've lived there now 6 years it's a 20x40 2 story,we are completely off grid in Wyoming. 21 solar panels give us all the electricity we need ,lights,refrigeration, welding,etc...we to we're going to build a regular house but decided to keep it in the shop because the cement slab keeps it cool all summer without air conditioning and warm in the winter because it absorbes heat as a heat sink besides it keeps the taxes down

    Great job on the framing, and happy Mother’s Day!
    You might want to ensure there is a jack stud at each end of the window so you’re not counting on the nails to hold the weight of the overhead loft. I know it’s a temporary structure, but the upper plate is normally doubled up!
    You guys are a pleasure to watch working together, and it great that the kids get involved as well..

    • @BlueLakeRV
      @BlueLakeRV Před 4 lety +7

      Mike McLeod I came to the comments to see if anyone mentioned anything about the headers. I like to have each end sitting on a stud so it isn’t being supported solely by the nails. They got a lot done though and it probably won’t be that big of a deal for a temporary living space. Plus having those jack studs under the window sill will help bare some of that load.

    • @nieldcreek2098
      @nieldcreek2098 Před 4 lety +12

      Yeah I know it’s temporary so I don’t want to be too pesky, but I think it would be best to use treated lumber for the bottom plate, as it is touching concrete. Also headers would serve you much better if they were an 1-1/2” longer on each side so that the header could sit on a trimmer to carry the load directly down to the floor. ... not trying to be a know it all, but I’ve been around the trade most of my life. I will say that your quality is very good, as well as your teaching the kids! All the best folks!

    • @keithhogan6997
      @keithhogan6997 Před 4 lety +9

      I came to the Comments for the same reason. The window frame butts up against the King stud and the Jack stud supports the outer edges of the window to carry the load to the Floor plate; which I agree is best if its treated lumber or utilizes an insulating pad to stop moisture in the concrete from wicking up. No Jack stud under the window nailed to the King means that all the header weight is now bearing on the nails from window frame to King stud. Temporary or not it's all about safety. A double top plate is always a good idea with your loft.

    • @alankee1065
      @alankee1065 Před 4 lety

      There is something else to consider. If you properly size a rim joist for the loft floor to be secured to the pole building posts, then the outside framing that was done will be non structural. Nice neat job.

    Jeremy, 2:36 window buck, jack carries load transfer from under header to bottom plate, king goes along side header from bottom plate to top plate. Cripple under window buck will get you by on a temp. Nice progress. Swing that framing hammer, don't choke it, let it fly big guy.

    When nailguns first came out, I made all my crew continue to carry that big framing hammer anyway. The nailgun won't pull a gap together. I wanted to walk around at the end of the day and see zero gaps. So they had better not only carry the hammer, but use it to pull gaps together. Add a hand driven nail, if necessary...

    Great job. A lot of work done in one (?) day. Are you going to use spray foam insulation, closed cell, for the tiny home and ALL of the barn ? If you get an outdoor wood furnace you could heat all of the space and you domestic water. Then after the big home is built you just run a second line to the house. We love our's. No mess inside, wood can be wet, icy, knock off the snow and throw it in. You already plan on using wood for your heat this would do dual duty. Hope your weather is getting warmer. Have you started your seed's yet ?Stay safe and healthy. God bless.

So, if it were me in that situation, I'd build that barndominium space primarily for the four kids and for shared kitchen, dining, and living space for everyone. I'd then turn the camper into an entirely private personal space for getting needed rest, relaxation, and time apart from the kids. Nothing wrong with your plans but just saying its worth considering keeping the camper as your own private retreat.

    I have to let the two of you know a few things. Yes your hubby’s the best and is cute. And I say that with much respect. And I absolutely love you letting your kids in on the build. Most adults don’t have that kind of patience with there kids or any kid. So much respect for that. And I love watching the two of you have fun together while working and not to mention you work good together. Most wives won’t do things you was much respect for getting in there and getting it done. Love your channel and all u do and have done for many. Thanks for being a little for so many and making me smile and my hart grow.

    I just recently found your videos. I love what your doing and it's great for an old timer like me to be able to watch.
    By trade I was a construction engineer but I've also been a school teacher for the past 20 years in Korat Thailand.
    I also like watching red poppy ranch, but it will be great way to be able to watch your videos from the begining.
    Could I ask, like red poppy ranch, can you number your videos as you release them, so I, and others, make sure I/we watch them in order?

    It's so awesome that with home schooling, you can turn anything into a learning experience. I did the same thing with my 2 youngest children. Until they got smarter than me. They are finishing out in school.

    Can’t wait to watch you guys from the beginning! We want to do something very similar, though we are nearing 50 years old and have 3 teenagers.
