This scena from Il Pirata was performed in May 1959 in Hamburg. It is instructive to observe Callas's hands and arms, positions of the head and her telling eyes, all at one with the drama in Bellini's music. In November of that year I was fortunate to hear her as Medea in Dallas and observe her closely only three rows (center) away from the stage. We are fortunate indeed that some precious visual images of her in performance have been preserved.

I wish we had the recording of her singing the full opera at La Scala the previous year with Corelli and Bastianini, instead we have a concert performance from New York which has a rather sub-par supporting cast, I hope that the La Scala performance has been preserved and will be released someday

not sure what you mean...flexible, vibrato not out of control, and some remarkable dynamic control. No spreading either. As for questionable choices in chest timbre and darkened mid-voice exclamations, they were choices. Perhaps not optimal, but eh.....still beats Netrebko, Angela Meade, etc
