  • I'm starting a new little series this month on "New Classics", featuring some great contemporary tunes that fit into the oldtime or bluegrass repertoire. In this first installment we're looking at a super fun tune by my bandmate and super-talent the 19 year old Gus Tritsch (who I guess wrote this tune when he was 15 or 16...). You'll get to hear Gus play the tune with me, he's playing Banjo-Ukelele and also hear him play his tune on the fiddle at the end, so stay tuned! I think you're going to love this one, it's a great tune.

What key do I tune the banjo for this? Also, what chords is Gus playing here? I don't know why this tune has stumped me so badly ~ I've been trying to figure it out since I first heard it a few years ago at Clifftop. (And Gus lives in the same area as I do!) Help!

Hi! It’s an A tune so you’d likely tune the banjo to A (aEAC#E) or G with capo at two. I have the music notation with chords on my Patreon. But basically it’s a combo of F#m A E and D chords. As for how to play it on a banjo, I don’t know seen as I haven’t learned it on banjo, but maybe @bradkolodner can help.

It is possible to play this tune in standard tuning, by modifying some fingerings. But, that’s not how it’s intended to be played, and it won’t sound the same. If you don’t want to tune your fiddle up to AEAE you can tune the A and E strings down to make the tuning GDGD which takes away the risk of breaking strings. Hope you’ll give retuning the fiddle a go, it’s a lot of fun.
