Man your videos are really helpful! I am just about to get a Marimba one, Basso Bravo w/ enhanced keyboard. So excited to watch all of your videos and learn :)
Thanks so much for doing a video on this. I have a friend who REALLY messed up her wrist working on those independent rolls and ended up wearing a brace when playing Chameleon. Exercise looks great, I'm gonna give it a go first thing!!!
Sure is! It's used in about every grip. You can check out Pius Cheung for burton grip rolls, Keiko Abe for traditional grip rolls, or Stevens for Stevens grip rolls. They are all doing 1 handed rolls, although slightly differently.
Thanks for the video! I was having the "mallet in line with the arm" hindering my progress. Thanks for helping me clear that up! And that words unspoken piece is great!
The independent roll's main drawbacks are having a small dynamic range and being a very tiring technique. Heavy mallets sort of make this problem worse. For short spurts it's fine but if you have a lot of them I tend to stick to light mallets.
Just getting my chops back, Struggling with 4-mallet positioning in the palms of my hands. I think I’m choking on ‘em. You’ve probably covered this already, I’ll dig around a bit. Thanks.
Well, using non-glossy handles is a must if you have sweaty hands. (Many IP mallets have gloss) Other than that, there isn't much you can do for sweaty hands besides wrap your mallets with a tape of some kind. This could lead to fluidity problems, but some pros do just find with wrapped mallets.
the mallets i use for 4 mallets are the same IP setup from your Mallet comparison video. my 275s are non-glossy. but my 200s and 300s i accidentally ordered them Laquered. i do have mallet tape, but i am still on the fence if i should use the tape all the time for just the outside mallets or all 4 of them. I also own a pair of Vic Firth M183s that are non glossed.
Sí, pero es más difícil. Funciona bien para un intervalo de una octava a una cuarta. Pero para los pequeños intervalos, es mucho más difícil. Mira videos de Pius Cheung!
I know right :) When you move 5 times in 5 years with 5 different gigs, it makes it hard to make some quality vids :) Luckily things are calming down :)
so, i am learning Steven's grip currently. And i keep running into a recurring problem, my outside mallets tend to move out of their normal place. It's because of my fingers getting sweaty. Do you have any advice on how to solve the problem i am having?
I'm not sure :) I'm on the DVD of course, but back then they didn't show much of the front ensemble. Nowadays you can find everyone's pit on youtube, but back then people only posted drumlins vids :)
🔥🙌🏾 very useful info on positioning and torque …from a Caribbean steelpan player… give thanks 😎💫

You're welcome! Yes life is calming down a bit now :)
Thanks for the video! Have you thought about reviewing the Kevin Bobo mallets?

Are you doing Stevens grip? The first Stevens video addressed some common mallet placement issues
That's great!!! If you have any requests, shoot them my way!

Thanks for this video!!! I have one question; does it make a lot difference with heavier or lighter mallets? What do you recommed to practice?
nice i usually use the ls15l's or the ls20's

That's great! Wish I knew about that when I was starting out, Could have saved me a lot of poorly performed pieces :)

THIS
I NEED THE ANSWERTO THIS
Is it normal to have your hands hurt after practicing a long time, or is it a technique issue?
Tyler Beasley it's normal
It's a technique issue. It's also normal, unfortunately. Anything that hurts should be immediately eliminated from your playing, as it's unhealthy.
Do you by any chance tutor ? In California, or naw
I can do an online skype/FaceTime lesson, but I’m quite a ways from Cali :)
Do you have any footage of yourself when you were in the Crossmen?
I'm not sure :) I'm on the DVD of course, but back then they didn't show much of the front ensemble. Nowadays you can find everyone's pit on youtube, but back then people only posted drumlins vids :)
Crossmen is San Antonio right?
what song is at the end?sound great
I made it up with my marimba and ableton live!
I know this is hella old, but that was Dr. Gradus
Well in general, paid is bad, burn and perhaps some soreness is good. If you're getting sharp pain, you probably overdid it or were too tense!!!
