- If your ABS light is on, transmission is slipping, and/or speedometer is inaccurate, your vehicle (or transmission or transfer case) speed sensor may be the culprit. In this video I show you step by step how to replace your speed sensor in a 1988-2005 GM Pickup and SUV.

Had two shops look at my 1994 GMC pickup, one wanted to rebuild transmission, the other had no clue. Saw your youtube and replaced my speed sensor. All is fixed now, thanks
380,00000 miles on my 1995 Chevy 1500 2 wheel drive that I've owned since new. Original Trans and Motor. Been using Castrol full synthetic since new. Change oil every 5000 and Trans fluid every 50,000 Trans started changing funny and slipping and gauges stop working. Change speed sensor, that took care of problem. Thanks for helping me. Kevin.
Same here. Mine has 370,000 at the moment. 98 gmc 1500 2 wheel drive 5.7 L
This guy makes really good videos-he's clear, concise, edits out crap, and his info has saved me hundreds by avoiding the auto shop "trap". Thank you sir!
Correct he is a great communicatir and helped me immensely ‼️
Great job of describing the symptoms and where to find it underneath the truck. It helped me figure out that my problem had a high probability of being a speed sensor issue.
I swapped out the speed sensor and it fixed two of the three problems I was having with my 1995 GMC Sierra 1500: the speedometer moving erratically and the automatic transmission not shifting as smoothly as it should. The only thing it didn't fix was the ABS warning light. But I'll check out your other videos to look for a solution. By the way, the sensor in my truck was a whole lot harder to remove. I had to use a foot and half long, 1/2" ratcheting breaker bar with a 1" socket to get it off. Great video! Four years later and it's still helping people fix their own trucks. Thanks. - Richie
Just installed a new VSS and the erratic speedometer, ABS light, and Brake Light all went away immediately! Thanks for the help!
What I believe is important and appreciated from your informative, non BS video: You educate with details like "this usually won't throw any code" also the different locations for standard and 4x4 applications. Great to the point and helpful. Thank You
Your description of symptoms fit exactly with what I'm seeing on my 1998 1500 with 4 wheel drive. Thanks for taking the time to create this excellent video.
A PERFECT HOW-TO-FIX VIDEO! Thanks so much for making it. Our truck is fixed, and your video gets straight to the point! As thanks, I bought my sensor using your link. Thanks again!
THANK YOU!! IVE been looking for this awesome video for 4 months!! You just don't know how much this 61 year old disabled lady needed to find this video. My 2002 chevy avalanche with 260,000 miles has been parked because of the ABS LIGHT, speedometer and shifting issues. And I've told many that this is the issue. But no one wants to just help replace for me. They're saying $275. Up to $3,500. But I know that my ole RED just needs this $30. Part and I'll be fixing it myself THANKS TO YOU AND THIS AWESOME GREAT VIDEO!! BLESSINGS TO YOU FROM OLE DISABLED 61 YEAR OLD CENTRAL KENTUCKY LADY!! 🙏
Thank you for keeping this plain and simple ..and no music !! The only music I like to hear is my 5.7 cruisin down the street! Thanks again.
Very helpful. I was told at the mechanic shop that there was a leak at the VSS. They wanted $138.61 to fix it. I said to myself, that's a send sensor, I should be able to fix that myself. So I found your video and it couldn't be easier. Thanks for saving me $$. Dawn
Excellent Video!! I overfilled my transmission, on a 1995 K1500. The sensor malfunctioned, no speedometer and not shifting from 2nd. Replaced it drained the excess ATM and back on the road!! Thank you I am now a subscriber!!
Super clear explanation. Just purchased a 94 GMC 1500 4x4 Auto Trans. Service Engine light just came on (less than a week after driving it home). I have also noticed sporadic shifting as you mentioned. I'm going to check the OBD and see what codes pop up but this inexpensive, easy replacement is at the top of the list of troubleshooting.
Thank you so much! my transmission was having trouble changing gears and my speedometer did not work, now both are not a problem!
Mentioning the symptoms of the faulty part at the start was perfect. Thanks.
Your videos are awesome 😎 straight up and straight to the point no bs and pure honesty. Got myself a 1993 Chevy single cab 2500 thanks for all the knowledge you share it really helped me out.Keep posting new and positive videos will be looking for them. TY
Great job on information. Had a non working speedometer, ABS light on, erratic odometer and shifting and check engine light on my 1998 Olds bravada. Replaced VSS and all problems fixed. Perfect video. Thanks.
Codes for the engine light???
As a proud DIY gal, I was so glad to find your very informative and clearly outlined video for replacing the speed sensor in my '05 Chevy Suburban after watching a couple of others that left me frustrated & confused.
Thanks for the information it really helped.
I luv DIY Gals.
first truck bought today, coming from the car scene and this def helped perfectly
Solid video. It's nice to see video being done on these older trucks. With the cost of stuff these days I need to keep my truck alive.
Thanks so much for this. My speedo would occasionally stop working and then later start up again and then today the ABS started flashing a code 9 (Open Circuit to Speed Signal) so this all ties in to what you are suggesting should be an easy fix. Great video that gets straight to the point.
I have a 93, 95 suburban, and my daughter's 94 pickup that i work on. Your video is the first no beating around the bush. Thanks.
Absolutely helped-My 1995 2WD 227,000 sierra had the same issue. This is the only sensor I hadn't replaced..Thanks brother.
THANK YOU!!! This was the one video where it didn't look like you needed all the special mechanic tools to fix it!!!
Rebuilt my trans 7000k ago and it started shifting funny and slipping. Changed the shift solenoids and then it wouldn't shift past 2nd and the speedo stopped working. Almost had a heart attack thinking I had to pull it back out and disassemble to figure out what went wrong! Watched your video, changed the vss and now it shifts perfect again and the speedo works! Can't thank you enough! You saved my sanity
Own a 2004 z71 avalanche and I am sitting in my truck watching how to replace speed sensor..Great video and easy to understand..thanks
Thanks brother great video simple and to the point no b.s., Awesome that you showed 4x4 and also talked about the difference with 2 wheel drive. Gave you a thumbs up and subscribed.
I really have to say thank you I just now subscribed I just got this truck I'm flipping out sensors left and right already got the cooling temperature switches changed out
Thank you very much, people like you with deep knowledge in the diagnostic are super helpful. God bless you. 👏
Thanks, I appreciate you talking about 2WD vehicle like mine. It makes sense to the problem.
I was about to pay to get a rebuild and I went down to autozone and bought the part installed it and it relieved so much stress thanks this helped very much
Replacing this sensor fixed my transmission that would shift usually from first to second then would slip in 3rd and was shifting all over the place.
Thanks for showing me how the hardest part was getting under the truck.
I'm going to try this in the morning. Everything you described is actually what I'm experiencing. Thank a lot!
Arizona
I like it when commenters say that and “9months later” still no comment “if it fixed their problem”… lol usually not otherwise they’ll be excited to come back and say “thanks so much, it fixed my problem!” Lmao
I ran into your video and I think that just might be my problem with my Chevy. I'll give it a go tomorrow. I appreciate it. 👍
I love that i found this video. I have somethings to change out in my 91 that has never been replaced and this is one of them. I have subscribed and will be looking to see if i can find more on what i need to change. Thank you!
Thanks! Our 2001 GMC Jimmy has a failing speed sensor and your video has helped greatly.
This sounds like the exact issue my 2000 k2500 ls is having. Looks like a simple fix thankfully. Gonna do this first, and then clean the abs wheel speed sensor if the problem isnt resolved. Thanks man
You put the location of the sensor on the thumbnail. How great. That's such a headache saver. Thanks!
Thanks for the good information, I've been working on my 2000 chevy z71, i have conection plug & cluster issues. Thanks for reminding me about the speed sincor... Currently using a phone for the Speedometer....
This was the most helpfull hint on the VSS. I am an all the above with this particular issue. Thanks JGM.
Gonna do both my speed sensors tomorrow! Hopefully this cures the problem. About 50,000 miles ago, the dealership replaced the one on the tranny...but I'm just gonna do both to be safe! Thanks for the great video!
Excellent video. Definitely a help! Easy to follow and good video so you can see what to do Thank you!
This video is really helpful. I'm 14 and this helped me change it
I just bought my 1990 Chevy 1500...
So this was very helpful....
Very helpful . Going through all sensors & what ails a problem . . . this explains alot that I wasn't aware of . Thanks much ! Never knew part existed .
Thank you your information is very helpful I have had the transmission out two times now so this may be just what it take to fix it
Thanks! Thislooks quick and easy. I'm getting a new speed sensor this weekend.
Easy and simple! Thank you
My next project. Hope this helps Thanks for the vid.
Thank you for the knowledge
I appreciate you for making this video to help people
Omg, yes you're video was super helpful. Saved me a lot of money and you were so easy to understand... I will be looking forward to more helpful tips since I hit the subscribe button! Thank you so much!
Extremely professional concise video! Is the input speed sensor different from the one you replaced? Thanks!
Thanks for the info and I will be replacing the speed sensor on my Blazer this week and see how it works!!!
I found your video after spending 100s of $$$ and here you are with the solution I have been looking for. My 04 Trailblazer has all the symptoms you mentioned in the beginning and no codes for this issue. So accurate man.
Thanks for the comment man! It sucks you had to spend a bunch of cash before finding the solution though, but now you know where to find me!
DID THIS TAKE CARE OF YOUR ISSUES???
@@juelzgdo2660 yes almost immediately.
That was it thanks my brother
Much happiness and blessings to you and your family from Las Vegas
Speedometer stopped working and then the transmission stopped shifting properly. Figured it was a senor of some sort and figured it would be a pain to get to but this video cleared it up pretty good
This video is so helpful! I have a 1993 Sierra that I had the transmission rebuilt in after I bought it (it wouldn’t shift past second, so a needed rebuild) and the speedometer has always been inaccurate in it. I’m going to try replacing this sensor to see if that helps.
Thank you for the super helpful and clear video!
Did it work
Did it work??
I think you just saved me a ton of troubleshooting time. The symptoms you describe match my problem, with the exception that I hear a bit of a grinding noise when I drive the truck. i'm hoping when I remove my speed sensor it is still intact and is not in pieces floating in the transfer case!
This sounds like my issue. Did the speed sensor fix the issue?
Thanks for a quick, to the point, very helpful video. Saved me some bucks!!!
Thank you so much for this video!!! Saved me having to replace my transmission as I first thought. Made my year!
You just earned a new subscriber! Awesome video man you got the job done and explained it good 💯
Installed on my 2005 Chev Silverado 4WD, it had a C0300 Rear Propshaft Error Code. With the new sensor, it shifts to Auto, 4 Hi, 4 Low & 2 Hi with no issues. The sensor was on the Transfer Case on the passenger side, it took about 10 minutes to do and saved me $200 that the Shop wanted! The old sensor and electrical connector had some corrosion on it from the salty Canadian winters. Cleaned the connector with a small wire brush and covered it with die electrical grease to keep the water out.
This helped me alot man. Thanks. Going to change it now.
Thanks man! Easiest understanding video on this truck I've seen.
Good, concise information video! Thank you.
Thanks i been looking all day for a video on the truck with this problem
Awesome, I'm glad you found it and it was able to help you out!
Thanks for the information on how simple the speed sensor is to change and other problems don't show up.
I've been watching his videos for year's now and he always comes through and never let me down
You are a real pro..thanks for being so nice. .this helps the average joe..
Was about to tear apart trans when I saw ur video save a ton thank u
Thanks for posting. You give me hope : My 1994 AstroVan only has 1 & R & the speedo sits at O. Tomorrow I will buy a sensor.
Great host and your a genuine dude. I’ll be back for more videos. Keep up the hard work.
You just saved me from a heart attack man! I hope this works on my 98 jimmy. 🤞
Love the video short sweet to the point perfect I will definitely watch more
Great video...straight forward and to the point. My son's trans will only operate in 2nd and Reverse. The PRNDL indicator doesn't show what gear he's in. We've replaced the NSBU and the Ignition Switch as well as an inspection of the TCM connectors...still no luck. Any chance the speed sensor could be the cause?
About to go pick up the speed sensor for my ‘96 4x4 Silverado! Awesome video! Will let you know how it goes.
Thank you for sharing this information
Thanks for the valuable information. Very helpful
Thanks man, I'm glad this video helped. Thank you for the comment!
Thank you Midwest Garage. I have a 95 Suburban that was having shifting issues from time to time. Got an OBD1 code reader for my Suburban and it gave me the "morse code" for left rear wheel speed sensor? I'm going to remove this sensor and replace it. Hopefully it solves the issue. Thank you for posting easy and articulate videos to work on these trucks.
Same issues I am having with my 94 K1500 Suburban. I am gonna swap it out. Thanks man!
This video was a huge help I was having a issue we’re sometimes my truck would shift horribly for no reason when taking off from a light a code would come on and it would sometimes stay on or sometimes it would shut off. It was this sensor my plug has trans fluid in it so not only the Sensor but my plug as well fixed it and been mint ever since
I have a 2006 Silverado 1500 2 wheel drive and your video was very helpful and informative. Thank you very much. I also have all of the symptoms that you described.
Sweet, I'm glad this helped man! And thank you for the comment, it's good to know that it's a common issue and the symptoms aren't just something that we experience in the 90's pickups!
@@MidwestGarage No GM made sure that the problem kept being reborn in later models too 😆
@@jameswebb3932 Hahaha, For some reason that doesn't surprise me lol.
WOULD THIS ALSO CAUSE A NO MOVEMENT WHILE IN GEAR ??? I HAD SAME ISSUES (EXCEPT ABS / BRAKE LIGHT )
BUT NOW IT WONT MOVE
That was so helpful you explained that very well it was so easy for me to change the speed sensor thank you so much great video
thank you a lot this helped me fix my problem
Huge help! Thank you for the affiliate link as well, just ordered one.
Clicked because I misread title and thought it was wheel speed sensor and watched whole thing anyway xD thanks for being quick and too the point! feel prepared if my speed sensor ever does go now ;D
Thanks for the video. I changed mine in about 10 minutes. A shop told me the reason my dashboard brake light was blinking. Took my truck home and changed it, but it’s still blinking. Not sure what to do next. Maybe your next video will cover that.
This actually help me a lot thanks.
DUDE you saved a lot of time and money!
THanks!
Thanks for mentioning this.. made the diagnostic easy for a beater truck I picked up that now runs awesome’
Thanks for the video it was a good video I appreciate you very much. Needed to know this
