  • In this video, I will show you how to bypass the GEM module in a 1998 Ford F-150. You will know the GEM module is bad when the window starts to randomly roll itself down. After a while, the window will cease to roll down until the GEM module is replaced or bypassed. You can bypass it by taking the wire that comes from the down switch and connecting it to the wire that goes to the motor from the GEM module. this will effectively bypass the GEM module and the wire will run from the switch straight to the motor. This comes at a price however, you will not be able to access the one-touch down feature.

    Worked on my 2001 Ford F150. The two tan wires are a bit different. One is thicker than the other. For me the thinner tan cable worked perfectly to fix the issue.

    This is exactly what happened to me when I got into my truck this morning. I have a 1998 f150 3 door XLT 4.6L model. I had no windows , wipers or inside dome light. Bought a relay switch that did not solve the problem. I would purchase a GEM module until I seen a few video`s on the horror of removing it. So this video is right up my alley and will give it a go tomorrow. Thanks for the vid and I will reply after my attempt.

    So for the orange and white wire coming out of the white connector you splice it with the correct tan and blue wire going down the door
    Do you also also connect the orange and white and tan and blue spliced wires with the orange and white wire going up the wiring harness?

    • @TheMileHighMechanic
      @TheMileHighMechanic  Před 10 měsíci

      no, you just connect the orange and white from the connector to the tan and blue...leave the rest of the orange wire unconnected.

    Gem module sits on the backside of the fuse junction block. If the Windshield leaks, like most 99-2003 models do, it will leak into the dash onto the module and short it out eventually. Gem module is the middle man to all the accessories in the truck. Uts also not cheap to replace and is a pain the ass. Also, it could be the fuse junction block it self if it has leaked passed the Gem module.

      When I was researching the GEM module I knew it was a PITA so I decided to do a work around like this.

    I know this is old, but any idea what color the wire might be if there is only 1 tan/blue wire? The tan/blue wire is definitely for the passenger side, but I went through every wire in the bundle multiple times and there are no other tan/blue wires.

      @@TheMileHighMechanic it is a 2003 f150 xlt. the door panel is different, the door handle is higher. But everything I read like 97-2003 are almost the same.

    great but mine neither window moves so if i do this both windows will work again or is there something else i have to do?

    • @TheMileHighMechanic
      @TheMileHighMechanic  Před 2 lety

      Yes, as long as the passenger side rolls down with the passenger switch. In other words, if they don't work on the driver's side and they do on the passenger, this fix will work.

    If the passenger window still works but the driver side doesn't, is it the GEM module? I can here a relay or something click when I try the driver side button.

    • @TheMileHighMechanic
      @TheMileHighMechanic  Před rokem +1

      It is definitely a possibility if you have the one touch down feature. You can replace the module and if it does not work I would look into the window motor. The fact that a relay is clicking could mean that power is being sent to the window, but if the motor is shot it will not open and it will give you the symptoms that you are facing. A invaluable tool in diagnosing electrical issues is a multimeter. I recommend testing the voltages/continuity from the switch to the GEM module and from the GEM module to the motor; this will give the the answer that you are looking for.

      @@TheMileHighMechanic Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I have a 97 XLT with the one touch down thing. FWIW, I drove my truck this morning, and it worked. Then on my way home...it stopped working again. Then, I sorta pulled up on the panel that holds all the switches and wiggled it, tried it again, and it worked again. So maybe it's the switch itself, or the wire that connects to the the GEM is loose. I'm not sure if the relay clicks when I press the down side...it might have only done it when I pressed the up side of the switch.

    Got a question what if it doesn't roll up but the other windows go up and down would it be the motor or is it just out alignment?

      @@aprilmeadows1007 Sounds like a GEM module issue, if you follow the steps shown in the video, it should clear up the issue.

      I cannot remember if all the wiring goes through the gem module, but if the passenger side has the auto down feature as well, it is worth a shot at attempting this.

      Are you sure you spliced the correct wires? If this fix did not work, then the GEM module is not the problem. What happens when you push the switch? Is there any sound at all?
