- Nothing ruins a good night out like the next mornings hangover. What we eat to combat this evil however is important. I asked you all the best hangover foods in your country and went to the kitchen to cook and try them myself.
Five of you lent helped me out and I want to say a huge thank you to Leonor (@leonor_ar_), Ainé (@aine_rafferty_), Tahiri, Khulan (@oneeaday), and Parscan (@parscan_pars)
Recipes I followed (and tweaked):
Torta Ahogada: www.mexicoinmykitchen.com/tor... (For the sauce, I used canned plain tomato sauce)
Kottu: blog.arousingappetites.com/ko... (But I didn't use japaleno, I used green chili)
Bantan: www.mongolfood.info/en/recipe... (I used beef bones for the broth and 1/2 beef bullion cube)
Ulster Fry: www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/th...

I can't believe I'm in this video! I'm the awkward Sri Lankan girl in the beginning. Thank you Beryl for having me on your channel 🙏
OMG you were a great ambassador for your food! I'm totally going to try making kotte! I would totally watch you cook more dishes on your YT channel if you ever want to start doing that!
You are so adorable! Please tell me you have a CZcams channel
Omg akka you were so cuteee thank youuu for taking kottu to the world cause it should be out there!!!!!! Lots and lots of love from a fellow Sri Lankan❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for sharing this!
Υou are so lovely! Not awkward at all! 😁Happy New Year!
Mongolia 🤝 Ireland
not having many traditional dishes but having a traditional hangover cure
BTW if you can’t get mutton bones much better to go for lamb bones (or goat) than beef as the flavour profile is nothing like. In the UK we eat both lamb and beef frequently but I understand lamb is less common in the US so maybe people don’t realise that although they are both red meats they are very different. Oh and mutton is just an older lamb.
In Glasgow we ate a version of the Ulster fry where the potato farl was called a tattle scone. In England we have fried bread instead. I much preferred the tattle scone. Usually we don’t have all the possible parts of a fry up but just pick and choose the parts we fancy or if cooking at home, those we have to hand or that are a family tradition. My mum cooked bacon, pork sausages, fried eggs, black pudding, tinned beans and tomatoes with fried bread. So Beryl actually produced the Fry in the traditional way for mainland Britain when she left out a couple of items!
I love how your format has subtly changed. Instead of you talking about the food during the cooking stage, you bring in the people of the food. It really puts the food to perspective! The world is so big, and it’s not just “American”. Instead, we live in a great big world with millions of foods that span millions of miles. Isn’t that cool???
It's so good! Love the new format.
@@justinkuo4007 Yeah, being stuck in quarantine I've been learning about different types of food behind my monitor. Not the most ideal, but it's been kinda fun!
@@jonl8306 I've connecting all the dots when it comes to food history and "trade". Like, beryl shared 5 different recipes with spam from around the world! I think for me when I take in account to dumplings: a dumpling is just flour and water with some sort of filling. Well, when you look at the landscape of China, a huge country, but they have different dumplings from region to region. A Momo is found in the country of Tibet, but the fillings ARE totally different due to its region and proximity to India. A momo is a dumpling, but its totally different from a dumpling from shanghai or Xian.
AND THIS IS JUST DUMPLINGS. Imagine the differences if you trace the history of breads from around the world. A flour, yeast or no yeast, and water.
We truly live in a great big world with billions of stories behind the foods we eat.
Yeah I love it so much!
I agree, it is really fun to see people talk about the food, and share their culture.
"there's a kottu out there for you, you just haven't tasted it yet!" ngl that absolutely sold me on it lol. I'm gonna try it!
Same
Yesss. You can customize kottu amd come up with your own kottu. She made vegetable kottu here. You can add any meat or egg or can add white source/cheese and give it a mac and cheese vibe. Or you can cut every thing into big chunks and make dolphin kottu. Chicken kottu and cheese kottu are my favourites
Its supposed to be made with Parotta. Parotta is a fattier version, and is so much better. Try it with this type of bread instead.
I was sure some comments would mention ittt aaaaa so adorablee
Right I was like I need some cheese and avocado!
The Srilankan girl is so wholesome ☺️
I would love it if you’d publish a book (biiiiiig book) with all of these recipes, categorized by chapters like “hangover” or “comfort food”. It’d be such a great atlas because you’re collecting recipes from all over the world and you can’t possibly make videos about all of them. So.. let us have them in written form. Im sure I’m not the only one who would definitely support you in a project like this.
Yes yes yes
Gotta drop this on her patreon forum, eh?
I’d love this
She shouldn't because these aren't her recipes. It wouldn't make any sense for her to publish others recipes and make money off of them.
My thoughts exactly! yes, please write a cookbook.
You are just the cutest little thing! (I'm a 67 year old mother; I don't mean to be disrespectful.) And I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your reactions to that first bite of each dish. After discovering your channel, I've even gone back and watched...that show you worked for that's name has completely slipped my mind. Very good, too. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with in 2021!
She worked for great big story
This comment is so cute
@@katekramer7679 that's true
I have also gone back and watched great big story.
@@katekramer7679 oh yes, those sassy old girls are so adorable (not meant disrespectful, I'm a 44 year old mother)
I really like how you have clips of viewers describing their own food. I've never met anyone from some of these countries and I feel like you have expanded my world.
1000% yesss!!
So fun! Next can you ask for pregnancy and post-partum foods from around the world? So many traditions with this
I second this! I’m a new mom so I love this idea💕
I would love to see something like that.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the serving vessels Beryl has. Reminds me of the bowls my grandmother had. They too had these really ornate flowers and fruits on glazed porcelain bowls.
my mom collects similar vintage dishes and we look for them at antique malls together, it's fun to see beryl's collection and know other millennials appreciate it :)
They are almost all Pyrex. My grandma had lots but there was a family issue and I couldn't have any. I have some my mom had, they are the best.
They are so cute.
You’ve been a bright spot for me in 2020. I know the circumstances around you having to start this channel were not the best but you’ve really made this your own thing. Thanks for the sunshine! Happy new year!
What a beautiful comment! And I completely agree. 🤍
Absolutely agree with you! Beryl has seen the silver lining around every adversity. That is a winning attitude to have!
Same here thanks @beryl
All of your comments are super kind....I love this channel because I get to cross paths with like minded people who are nice.
My mother's kottu roti is absolutely amazing and I'll put the recipe down below. We eat meat so there is chicken in it. But u can replace it with anything and u don't need the egg either.
1. Make a chicken curry. It needs to be as flavourful as possible and quite runny. Kinda like a Sri Lankan chicken gravy.
2. Chop up some roti or parotta, white cabbage, carrots and onions.
3. Pick out SOME chicken pieces from the gravy and pick them apart and put to the side. Remove all bones.
4. Sautee the vegetables and roti in a big pan and add lots of the chicken gravy but not all.
5. Add an egg or two if u want and put those chicken pieces in.
6. And it's done. You can eat it with some more gravy or just eat it as it is.
do wedding foods!!!
wedding foods from around the world. That would be crazy interesting, but that would be such a mini-documentary series. Weddings in other countries may be a day to a week long or even longer.
@@_jonathanlue yeahh
Well, you don't have to film every minute of it.
The bone broth would also restore electrolyte imbalance after the heavy drinking; it makes a lot of sense as a hangover dish :)
I know right after a good work it would work aswel..
A great way to end 2020, with my girl, Beryl Shereshewsky ☺️
Happy new year!
And for me in India its a great way to start 2021 with Beryl Shereshewsky 😊 as it is already 2021
I'm watching this, whilst eating my hangover food. Naan bread is used as a wrap, it is filled with chicken tikka in butter chicken sauce, mashed spiced potatoes and peas, with mint sauce, and yoghurt.
ooomph!
I think that's the most British thing I've ever heard 😂
*drool* I've been putting off making coconut curry again, but you've inspired me so it's happening this week.
Not at ALL awkward! You seem so happy and positive which is definitely appreciated in this time 💚
@@Stagonas I'm not British, and it's probably my local Indian restaurant getting in on the Kebab culture. They call it a chicken tikka kebab. Kebabs are big in Australia.
In Scotland “potato farls” are known as “tattie scones” (very impressed you made them from scratch) and we have them with Lorne sausage, bacon, black & white pudding etc.. The biggest Scottish hangover cure is Irn Bru: a bright Orange, very sweet soda.
I don't think I've ever had white pudding - always thought that was an Irish thing! But aye, you can't beat a full Scottish breakfast. I can't imagine my life without square sausage and tattie scones :P
I’m from Northern Ireland and I have to agree, irn bru is one hell of a cure all, especially in a glass bottle 👀
why did I read that "potato farts" 🤣
My mum would give us irn bru when we were sick she said it if it helped a hangover then it would help a sore tummy
Beryl is bringing the world together by making everyone’s dishes. This is what we need.
As a Mongolian I have not seen people make or at that even correctly make this dish! Great to see you trying all these different dishes!
It looks nice
She knew what she was doing posting on new year's eve!
Id say for Kottu it's rare for them to make it with a fresh purpose-made gravy- all the ones I've seen in Trinco, Colombo etc are made with leftover curries! That way the flavour is much stronger and the kottu itself helps avoid waste
The Mongolian woman has the most comforting voice!
Soothing ... so little is know about mongolia 🇲🇳cuisine
I love how the kottu is like the Sri Lankan version of a kebab in the UK - it isn't what you eat the next day when you're hanging, it's what you go searching for at the end of the night when you're still wasted and the alcohol is making you ravenous! I love these videos :D
The American version of the "party's over at 2AM and I need to eat" food is basically any fast food place that's open late (usually Taco Bell or a sketchy burger joint) or anything from an all-night diner (sometimes a burger, but chicken and waffles is sometimes considered that kind of food or just a stack of pancakes).
We eat the torta ahogada with knife and fork and sometimes with a spoon for all of the salsa that it’s in the dish.
Btw ahogada=drowned
Basically torta drowned in salsa lol 🤗
Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽😘
I feel like another good alternative is tacos lol
They are quick and so tasty. For me personally, my go to is tacos but I do love a torta ahogada ❤️
i never ate a torta ahogada with knife and fork, always with your hands (and without cheese, as she did), and there even was a place where you could get your torta in a plastic bag, and you just tie it, bite a corner of the bag and slurp the softened contents... never tried it like that, but it was a thing
@@lauramdc7877 My go-to is chilaquiles. Yum!!
Knife and fork? Whaaaa?... I mean you get a spoon at the restaurant but outside the Jalisco Stadium is in a bag 👌🏼
@@eduardopadilla1307 afuera del Estadio Jalisco, un manjar
It's astonishing to see, that completely different cultures, living more than 6000km away from each other, eating the same stuff. We have this Mongolian dish with chicken or beef broth here in my part of Germany too. Happy new year and best wishes to all of you guys all over the world.
From Germany as well and I always find that funny too. The same goes for the Irish potato farls. Of course there is Kartoffelpuffer/Reiberdatschi from raw potato dough but there also are Swiss Rösti and Austrian/Bavarian Schupfnudeln/Fingernudeln. (And even some elaborate potato dough pastry filled with apples.) Then on the other side of the world in Korea they have Gamjajeon again with raw potato dough...
The dipping sauces and side dishes vary but potato dough pancakes seem to be quite popular internationally. I'm sure there are even more countries that have them...
Woo finally some Irish content! This is also the perfect choice too, I'm from Ireland and something else we love when we're hungover is something called a chicken fillet roll, which is just breaded southern fried chicken in a baguette with whatever else you want in it! A good Full Irish hits the spot too
Surrender to the sandwich. Motto for 2021
I think this is a merch opportunity.
The girl from Mongolia has such a soothing voice, she should make an ASMR channel fr!
The Sri Lankan girl is so cute!!! Does she have a CZcams channel?
She really is ❤️
She commented below! She has a YT channel but not many videos - if we all comment maybe we can encourage/bully her into uploading more cooking videos. 😂
@@katekramer7679 Omg where! I can't find her comment
Edit: Just did. Thanks for letting me know ❤️

I felt like something was missing from this video and then I figured it out... she didn't say "Hi, I'm Beryl." 😂
Literally felt the same and started the video again
OMG CHEESE KOTTHU AND MILO FROM PLAZA AFTER A NIGHT OUT IS THE BEST FEELING EVER.
also how COOL to see Tahiri here!!! we used to go to the same university xD
Duuuuude the iced milo from pilawoos 🤸✨

Can we have more bloopers? Your reactions to them are amazing and I think it adds an extra element of the reality of all your hard work. It could be a monthly thing for extra content or something! Love all your content, thank you for everything this year!
^^^YES PLEASE BERYL
She kind of had one in this one when she (unnecessarily, IMHO) effusively apologized for forgetting 2 of the items in the complex Irish dish. It's OK, Beryl! We forgive you!
It makes me genuinely so proud and happy that you included an Ulster fry in one of these videos, being from Northern Ireland myself 😂
Excellent recipes as usual. I had a torta ahogada in Mexico City served in a shallow bowl swimming in sauce so it was a knife and fork proposition. Super spicy. I’ve also seen street torta ahogada eaten straight from plastic bags. 😀👍
Beryl, the world has been inundated with food videos for decades now, and yet you bring something to the genre that has never been done before. I love watching your videos because of you and how you present the content. I hope the future has big plans for you beyond CZcams. May you have a blessed 2021!
So thankful to be apart of this project, Beryl’s fry looked great and she made her own potato farls I’m so proud! ☺️👏🏻💕
That Mongolian dish made me think of something I make often - a broth based soup with rivels. Rivels are like little dumplings, made by mixing one egg with one cup of flour. They make a crumbly mixture that I pour into boiling broth and cook. They are so simple to make, and my family loves them.
I missed the opening "Hi, İ'm Beryl"... There is like your unique identity, and i love it 😂
You know you've binged on Beryl when you recognize all her crockery and cooking devices. 50¢ soup bowl and air fryer - our old pals!
When you got to the Torta Ahogada I kept making bite motions whenever you would take a bite, it just looked that good...
You know when Beryl likes something because she looks at it like shes a little mad at it
The messiest foods are usually the best foods
That Mexican one looks epic and who doesn’t like halloumi?
Mexican here.
I thought she was going to make pozole or menudo.
The torta is legit

One of the things that I enjoy about you channel in that you teach. It’s amazing to now about the food and a little bit about the culture. That’s what sets you apart from other channels.
Happy new year everyone! My 2020 was made better by Beryl and her food explorations, I hugely appreciate it and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year!

I love you. I think what I love most about your episodes is the rawness we get with the grainy video shot in people's bedrooms all over the world, since that's everyone's reality right now. I've been watching foodie shows since what, 2002 (probably Bourdain and Cook's Tour) and I mainly watch them for inspiration. You inspire me to actually cook! Happy New Year.
