    Hi, I’m going to be 30 in a little over two weeks. I’m so sick of having people tell me I’m too young for my silvers coming in. I’ve dyed my hair for so long and I’m just so over it. I like how it looks and have decided to continue on this journey. I hate how gray hair is demonized.

    • @SusanInRealLife
      @SusanInRealLife  Před 4 lety +1

      I agree - why is gray hair considered so bad? I think we are obsessed with a youthful appearance. I wonder if this is a US thing with dying the gray and if other countries are more accepting of their natural gray hair? I think as more people embrace their gray, it will be considered more the norm. Good luck on your journey and thanks for commenting.

    I quit the dye 15 months ago and I’m SO happy with my decision! The dark dye was too harsh against my complexion. I cringe at pics of me 2 years ago. I also truly believe that, for the vast majority of us, we look better. Not younger, not older...better. The gray is like having a light around your face, and it’s just a color and we look however old we look. Thank you for your video. 😊

    Hi Susan, yes growing old is a privilege, I lost my lovely husband two years ago and I haven't had the chance to grow old with him or him to grow old. I tried to do it when I was looking after my husband, but everything was a struggle so i didn't need more struggle and gave up! But now even though people say"you are too young to go grey you have a young face", (I am 60 next year) I am obviously not too young as my hair is white under this 2 week dying sessions. So I am not listening, I too am on this exciting journey and I feel relieved I have started this again. Bless you for your wise words, stay safe X

      Hi Pierette! First, I am sorry for your loss. Thank you for reminding me not to take anything for granted today. In response to what people are saying about your young face, my mom had a different take on this. When I wanted to start going natural gray, she said "You will look good BECAUSE you have a young face"! Consider embracing headbands, hats and scarves to help transition, I found it made it easier. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Loved your video!
    The comment I got that sticks out...
    My friend was staring at me and I said “yes, I’m letting my hair go grey”. She replied “you don’t even want to know what I think about that!” I said “nope, I don’t. It’s my hair”

    I highlighted my hair while I was working because I was the oldest one in our office and I didn't want to become a victim of age descrimination and being judged. Today, at age 76, I still think like that. I can't seem to shake it. However, with the onset of Covid, I decided to let my roots grow. My white is quite dense around my face and I think it is flattering. This has given me the courage to soldier on. As you say, the longer the white roots are, the more texture it gives. I am now past that hard line of demarcation. One last thing, I am alergic to the dye. So sure I can take an antihistamine to control the itch, but I knew it wasn't good for my scalp. Now I can feel good about taking better care of myself.

    My last visit to the salon was in February, due to COVID. I have all the products to color my hair, but decided to let my roots grow out a little and see what my gray looks like (I've never seen it before). I love the gray, but wish I was already through the process. It'll be a journey, but I've decided that since I've come this far, I'm in! Thank you for the inspiration!

      I know, it's hard to be patient. I used to have a doll when I was little where you pressed the belly button and pulled the ponytail and then rewound it on the back button. I think her name was Chrissy? I wish I could do that on my hair! I think it takes a good 6 months to a year before I could really see the color. I'm so glad I did stick it out and still have brown parts on my hair that I stubbornly refuse to cut off yet. Thanks for watching and good luck on your gray hair journey!

    Thank you for sharing your pros and cons with us and your views on growing older. I am 68 and before this, I had always planned to stop dying my hair at 70. I am warm skinned with brown auburn hair and always thought my hair would look mousy gray. I thought only women who had dark natural hair would look nice with silver/white hair. I see now how silly that belief was as all the pictures I’ve seen of women who have stopped coloring their hair is hair that suits them and whatever their skin tone might be. I am more than ready to embrace whatever silver comes through and will enjoy this journey. I’m already getting comments from people close to me saying that I’ll look older and as you pointed out, they are entitled to their opinion. I’m totally ready now at this time of my life and just making the decision itself is freeing. You look lovely in your natural hair with your warm smile.

    I LOVE your response to “I liked it better before”. “Before what? Before I had the confidence to stop?” I used to get this a lot with my eating disorder because our society compliments and adores thin-ness and youth SO much that people have lost their perspective on the fact that *sadly* how “young or thin” someone LOOKS, is not an indicator of their healthy or vitality! I have exactly 3 gray hairs and in my Indian culture we call the first white hair “mother’s blessing, 2nd - grandmother’s blessing, 3rd - great grand mother’s blessing...and so on. SO there’s NO way I’ll be covering my blessings when they’re in full bloom ♥️

    I just subbed! I love your view point! what you said really resonated with me about why I am coloring my hair... it brought me no joy too! I have been doing it for 15 years! I am on three months with no dyeing . I cried last week.... but I really felt that .... just what you said... that I was hiding the idea that I was getting older to myself...and I am so tired of hiding and covering up what God made me to be! My mom says to me I am too young to be gray.. (I am 49) but God thinks I am ready for this right?! After all I AM gray I was just hiding it and I want to be ME. THis is me... I think your hair looks awesome!

Pandemic I haven't colored my hair since February and I'm finding I'm really enjoying the color around my face. At 65 I decided to stop coloring last October. The first 3 months it was driving me crazy and went to have some highlights & lowlights put in to blend the gray. I did that twice at a cost of $250. Ea time! I decided that was crazy and haven’t gone back. I have to admit that if it weren’t for the pandemic I might have caved but staying at home has helped to get me over the worst growing out part. Now it blends nicely and I’m used to it. I just clip it in a bun and put a pretty hairband on.

    I was one of those people who said I would NEVER let my hair go gray, and here I am, almost 60, and I haven't coloured my hair yet! I like the mix of my natural colour and the gray. It doesn't bother me at all right now. I've decided if, at some point, I'm not happy with the way I look, then I will colour my hair, but I'm hoping that never happens! I'm not sure I want to be a slave to my roots! I think that will be the deciding factor. Thanks for the inspiration! You look great! : )

    Hello ! I’m 55 and have dyed my hair since I was in my early twenties. This has stopped due to the pandemic. I haven’t been to a salon since early February.
    I appear to be white now ( my natural colour was very dark ) yes I’m having a lot of doubts but have always wondered what it would be like.
    The main reason I haven’t attempted to dye it myself is the hairdresser struggles to colour it as it’s quite resistant to dye.
    Yes I’ve had the comment about being too young. My husband is very supportive though.
    I also have curly hair which is more forgiving to trim !
    I think your hair looks great and you said some very encouraging helpful words . Thank you 😊

Isolation during COVID-19 has made me rethink my priorities in general, and hair colour keeps getting lower on the list. Actually it just fell right off. Personally, I find your natural hair color, first off, always has more depth than conventionally dyed hair and second, better matches your face and skin tone than any other color it could be. And I include when it changes color as you age and slowly begins to go gray.
    It is a fact that both your skin and hair are connected to melanin. It is the one thing that makes your skin and hair the color it is. So if your hair is changing color, your skin is probably changing color as well. And through dying my hair with Ayurveda, Ihave found that the best color for my skin and face...is the color it grows out of my scalp as. Due mainly to fact both are provided color by the same factor...your melanin.
    So I'm very excited to get a buzz cut and watch my natural hair color, grays and all, grow out. And just let it be. I personally believe that whatever your natural color is...will always be the most beautiful color your hair can be. The color it is and how that color changes, and how it doesn't change...it's so fascinating and I love it!

    I decided not to dye my hair exactly a week ago. I'm 57 and I don't feel it at all. My husband is nice and says I look 40 years old, ha, ha. I was worried that he would change his mind quickly when he saw me in gray hair ... Oh yes, I put gray hair on YT and a lot, lots of wonderful relationships, different women who decided to do the same, and I felt great and thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. They help me a lot in maintaining this decision. Best wishes

    Love that you’re so upbeat and positive about your transition to your natural color. Thank you very much for sharing. I spent the majority of my time nodding in total agreement as I was watching🤗. I’m a month into my second year. Brown hair that is beyond the center of my back, and I’ve only had one person be mildly negative: they don’t like the light/dark combo, why don’t I cut it. Meanwhile, my hair has stopped falling out by the handful every time I wash it.🥳. Just subscribed to your videos. Best wishes!

    your hair IS beautiful. I'm turned 56 and have mostly had my light brown hair highlighted over the years..a few times low lights. I was going to let it go grey AFTER my dtr's wedding that was suppose to happen this past COVID May. Well,,it's rescheduled to NEXT April 2021. I'm thinking that I'll give it going grey a serious whirl and see how it goes. Since I"ve not done anything but haircuts for about 1.5 years. Like you said, I can always have it done up artificially...lol IF I want to once the wedding day approaches. Thank you for this honest and uplifting video. I turn 50 this year and after going 3 + months without coloring over the grey, I really considered to keep growing out the grey. Then I told my parents I was going to let the grey grow out, they said right away I was too young. I said “I don’t care”. Then my Dad said “you’ll be discriminated against at work since you’ll be seen as an older woman, your annual raises won’t be as high”
    Well that comment tDID make me second guess myself. As a divorced woman, working in a corporate job,I do not want to risk making less money because Of the color of my hair. Has this “age discrimination” obstacle ever come up for you on your “Drop the dye” journey?
    My Dad then suggested that if I feel compelled to go grey, then do so AFTER I get this year’s raise.

    • @SusanInRealLife
      @SusanInRealLife  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi Elle, To answer your question, I don’t have a corporate job and can wear hats/headbands at work but I can understand wanting to look professional in a corporate setting. If the concern is about looking unkempt during the growing out phase, cutting hair into a short style would eliminate the root concern. Because of the pandemic and salon visits/health concerns, I think more people than ever are in various hair color stages so now is a good time as any to have roots if you decide to let it just grow out. Best of luck in whatever route you choose and thanks for watching!

The only comments I get is from my female friends who are in their late 30s-70s, and they all said the same thing, "Why don't you just dye your hair grey that's the style now". I tell them no-because it will ruin the authenticity and pattern of my silver streaks, and they seem to get it.

    • @SusanInRealLife
      @SusanInRealLife  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi! They are suggesting to dye your hair gray? I had thought of that myself but that involves bleaching and then toning. Dyed gray hair cannot be achieved at home with a box dye as far as I know, as least not on a brunette. That would be very damaging and expensive so I decided definitely not to go that route. So I look weird for a few years, I'm okay with it (most days)! Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Hi Holly, I can't see what length/style your hair is but what about clip on bangs or wig topper for covering roots and transitioning? A topper is used for volume/thinning hair and would just cover roots. Wigs have come a looong way. I think the high quality ones are expensive (maybe $200?) but think of it as money you would have spent at the salon. I think it would look great on video too. There are lots of good youtube videos on toppers you might want to check out. Happy Birthday to you (I'm 54 also)!

But we all are so used to try to look younger that we forget what looking your age is like. I am currently growing out my hair as well, and I told my dumbfounded family that I don't want to look younger, I just want to look my age, and as fresh as possible. But not younger, because: we all age, and trying to "postpone" this process cannot be healthy mentally.

    Really enjoyed your video. My gray stragglers are showing more now during the covid quarantine. I have a box of hair color in my bathroom but strangely I haven't decided if I actually want to use it. I'm 61 and am not yet predominately gray, just a bit of salt and pepper here and there. I have medium to dark brown hair and today I picked up a bottle of purple shampoo to tone down the lighter strands that have gotten brassy looking. I'm curious to see what if anything it does to my gray roots, maybe brighten them somewhat? My hair is also dry and curly. It would be nice to actually have shiny hair someday when all the artificial color is gone along with the damage. :)

I had dyed it for 20+ years and just thought my hair had "changed" due to hormones, age, etc but now I realize the chemical process was not very curl friendly and I was damaging it every month. I think curly hair does not do well with dye because it is already porous. Good luck on your exciting hair journey!

    Grey/silver certainly aged most of us. I’m in the decision phase right now, after 2 months lockdown and no salon visits - am I ok with it or not? I have an older face than my age (always have had) so I’m concerned I’ll look way, way older and just a bit dull, does anyone know what I mean by that? Is that a shallow concern? Probably lol. I know my husband isn’t happy for me to stop colouring my hair but I’m not going to do it just for him, after all I don’t complain about his baldness 😂. The thought of being 1.5 or 2 years looking messy is bothering me. So I’m sharing my thoughts here because I don’t have any other girls to talk to.

    • @SusanInRealLife
      @SusanInRealLife  Před 4 lety +1

      I felt the same concerns, especially the part about looking messy for 1-2 years. Wide headbands and hats, jewelry, earrings and make-up are a good way for me to brighten and accessorize during the grow out phase and look less dull. During the first year, I would ask myself What am I doing? so many times but I just kept going. My hair is SO much healthier and the streaky color is SO much nicer than the dull flat dye that I thought looked so good that it has been totally worth the messy phase. Take it one day at a time. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

      Aw bless you for replying! I’m going to give it a go. The first 2 months are already over, so it’s only another 22 months to go 🤪😂

    I love your sense of humor. You are so inspiring. I'm 36 and thinking of starting my journey of transitioning to grey hair. Do you think gray hair might negatively impact a woman's search for a job? I'm unemployed and that's my only concern. I come from a country where there is much prejudice against women with gray hair.

      Thank you! I am sorry to hear that there is prejudice about aging and gray hair. Hopefully employers realize that gray hair comes with age and being older means we are wiser and more experienced and mature and those are all great attributes to have in an employee. This is a very good question and inspires me to talk about it in another video. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
