    Great Video! I always enjoy it when you explain your reasoning for things. Too many people out there just don't know and assume things incorrectly. Farming is rough, especially when you have to depend on so many things out of your control - weather, grain & fuel prices, etc. Many long hours, but for some reason, I always felt like I accomplished something. Keep it up, take care, God Bless all farmers!

    I checked my corn today, planted April 24, chest high on me, but i'm only 5' 6" tall. Couple years down here, SE MN. you could find a few tassels in my corn. Got 1.8 inches of rain yesterday, more coming tonight, 10:30 PM here to night.

    You are right on the money with the pre emerge herbicides. We try to do the same thing. Talk about why you do 30" soybeans. We are south of Kansas City and very few people do not plant soybeans in 15" rows. We are trying to get a quick canopy.

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  Před 7 lety +1

      Mark Hertzog We haven't seen any advantage to having 15" or solid seeded soybeans. I'm sure our soils and climate differences are a big factor. I would guess that half the beans in our area are planted with the same planter as corn. This way we only have 1 planter. Many guys run 22" rows for both. One thing we have noticed (especially last year) is that we don't have much of a white mold issue with 30" rows, a lot of guys did in our area last year.

    Your soils look a lot like mine in the blackland prairie of Texas. We're at 79F at 5am, and 90F at 11pm if that makes you feel better about the temps. Since dicamba ready cotton, we're having a lot of problems growing vegetables here. Big losses on two tomato crops and then another squash crop. My 2 cents is the same reason roundup ran out of gas, in a few years dicamba will as well. Meanwhile my crops are getting hammered. I don't believe that the new formulations are safe from drift no matter how the sprayers are configured and I do think generic dicamba is being substituted, but will have no way of knowing. A good pre and post is a must no matter what you're doing, most have gone to a post only here.

    I find it most interesting that you are having serious issues with certain broadleaf weeds especially in your soya beans whereas our nightmares for most arable farms revolve around monocotyledon weeds where we are principally growing monocot autumn cereals. The main issue on most farms is how to address massive infestations of blackgrass as 80% of farms in the UK growing winter cereals have chemically resistant blackgrass. There are also on some farms issues with some types of brome and the majority of farms are infested with wild oats (although WO are still relatively easy to control).
    The only broad solutions to attacking these weeds is a cultural approach: a) delayed planting in the autumn, b)higher plant populations or c) most serious of all change of rotations to spring planted crops. None of these choices has any farmer appeal because the worst affected farms are those on heavy clay soils but these are precisely the farms where they have traditionally planted early in the Autumn before the soils get too wet and none want to move to spring cereals as yields and value/ton are significantly lower often due to soils being slow to dry out and warm up, seed bed production really difficult etc - so delaying planting = poorer yields!!
    Your piece on tile drainage was excellent and needs amplification.

    • @Vaneps0
      @Vaneps0 Před 7 lety +1

      Minnesota outdoors the issue with liberty is how long it has to sit. If I go out and spray liberty, and it rains 2 hours later, I just wasted that chemical. Whereas roundup only needs 20 minutes, believe that's what the centrol guy told me. I think a lot more people would use liberty beans if they could get that sit time lowered.
