      I see that the dead blow hammers come in 1, 2 , 3 pounds and I think maybe 4. Which weight do you recommend?

    • @FlatwareCreationSS
      @FlatwareCreationSS  Před 4 lety +1

      Patricia Hall The one I have is 1-1/2 pounds. 2 pounds would be nice and obviously the more weight you add the harder it is going to be to pound again and again. But you’ll have a little wider surface area so that could be nice. That will probably be my next one a two pounder.

    Could use a roller that they use in jewellery making

    • @FlatwareCreationSS
      @FlatwareCreationSS  Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah, you can use a rolling mill. But unless your mill opens up really tall, you have to flat it some to get it in there. It will make it extremely flat, but it will take some more time and possibly stretch it out.

    Do you use some type of metal spoon, or does it matter. The spoon I was using was hard as a rock and I could not get it flattened.... TIA

    • @FlatwareCreationSS
      @FlatwareCreationSS  Před 4 měsíci

      I use mostly silver plated silverware. Stainless steel is very hard and is really hard to bend unless it’s really thin.

    What's that glove you are wearing? Does it help hold the spoon steady, or is it a safety item?

    • @FlatwareCreationSS
      @FlatwareCreationSS  Před 3 lety

      I had the glove on to stop getting blisters. I probably flattened 60 spoons at one time. It takes a toll on your hands.

      I’m sorry that I missed your comment. I got the dead blow hammer at Harbor freight and the board I’m using is brown board it’s normally found where the pegboard is at Lowes or other shops like that

      I think I need a clipboard. Do I need to anneal the spoon?

    • @FlatwareCreationSS
      @FlatwareCreationSS  Před 8 měsíci

      If you’re using your mallet on steel and it still doesn’t get it flat, you might try flipping it over onto a piece of paper or something on your anvil and tapping on the back with a hammer just on the parts that are rippled. And a part enough to pass them out flatter. If you’re looking for absolute completely flat, I would suggest a rolling mill and possibly a 20 ton press either one. But when I don’t get mine perfectly flat, and there’s a little ripple, I will take my smaller hammer even sometimes the brass hammer that doesn’t leave so many marks on the backside it’s where it’s not gonna be showing any marks and I’ll tap that flat.

    • @SadietheMiracleDog
      @SadietheMiracleDog Před 8 měsíci +1

      I’m thinking that the rolling mill is a great idea. I think because I’m using stainless steel. I’ll also try my smaller ball peen. I’ll do this tomorrow and report back. Thank you 🙏

    Sometimes my spoons split along the edges. Does this happen to anyone else?

    • @FlatwareCreationSS
      @FlatwareCreationSS  Před rokem +1

      Yes it happens to me too. Most of the time the ball is round, like a soup thing or has a different shape than a regular spoon. And they normally crack on the sides. sometimes they don’t break, but other times they do, it normally has to do with the shape and the hardness of the base metal.

    • @kinderjojomojo
      @kinderjojomojo Před rokem +1

      @@FlatwareCreationSS so apart from the shape is there any other way you can avoid the cracking?
      Or identify the ones that are likely to split so I can avoid them?
      I mainly use souvenier spoons

    • @FlatwareCreationSS
      @FlatwareCreationSS  Před rokem

      @@kinderjojomojo sometimes it just comes down to the base metal. Some just don’t like to bend. Most often the Spoon is shaped in a oval, or might have a square top at the handle. Like a sugar spoon or a jelly spoon often times they are shaped not like a normal spoon where it meets the handle. And that’s why I’ve noticed that those spoons will split on the edges. Normally because of the slightly different shape.
