PrintABloks are 3D printed, interlocking bricks and more than just a simple copy of Legos. I had the chance to talk to the creator of them, Joe Larso, the @3dpprofessor at Rocky Mountain RepRap Festival 2023 in Loveland, Colorado!

@@REDxFROG Yes, but the 2x blocks have a more or less consistent cross section all the way up and come in a variety of sizes. I have a whole video about it on my channel, but I am a little biased.

I could think of vertically stacked bag clips.
It's perfect because you don't need to be thinking what are you going to print. Just some blocks in some random configuration and they can be used as-is!
this is just a good snapping mechanism to standardize and use with things that might need to be connected

The negative for it is available as STL you can boolean subtract from your own models.

Protip: Base block makes an excellent fast test print for making sure your settings are dialed in ok, and leaves you with a part you can use in quantity rather than another ugly boat.

I have a video about this one my channel too, and I've made a block that's got and X, Y, Z marked sides to further help your calibration.
I use Calibration Cubes as Feet for appliances. like underneath your playstation, stereo, etc.
doesn't have to cubes specifically, just any 4 of the same object as long it has a flat bottom to it.
The real question here is... Are they as painful to step on? Its pretty much a requirement
Yes, and no I guess? They look more rounded, but if you crush it and get PLA shrapnel embedded in your foot its probably worse:P

Another interesting concept is “Electroblok” where electronic components are mixed into custom designed Printabloks.
I don’t know if electrical connectors have been addressed yet, but something akin to “Lego Mindstorms” and *MAYBE* Snap Circuits is do-able.
Oooh, purging into an object? That's brilliant. Not just for print-a-blocks, but any print where you don't really care about color, either because it's just a functional part or because you're going to paint it anyway.
Great Idea instead pooping filament out to print it in a print-a-block

I love Love printablok! My kids and nephews love them too. They have grown with the kids too. Their into STEM and robotics now and the printablok pieces have found their way into multiple prototypes. It's just good building blocks. Good times! 🎉
Are you combining the connection mechanism to some custom parts? - Sounds like this could be a very flexible way to build and combine stuff
We've found this to be the case. The older kids stem platforms change and if those come with print model components... We can add printablok mounts too. Otherwise we use tie wraps and/or superglue. Sometimes I need to drill out when the holes aren't big enough for larger tie wraps. But the kids use what they got on hand and get creative. They usually start with the blocks to rough out ideas.
Excellent hands on "prototyping" with the blocks first. Broadens the spectrum of activity to literal hands-on doing and cognizing 😊
Hey Stefan, one thing you didn't emphasize is that they is also a great introduction to get people designing. Once you have the base PrintABlok file, you can add your own features or textures to configure it to your own needs.
Almost like the default cube in Blender but for the real world!
omg i was thinking of ways to make lego work better in 3d space and not this guy made it work but he also left it open source, thats so awesome

I LOVE that connector! I've been playing with a way of connecting surfaces together but still be able to dismantle whenever I desire. I'm gonna have to play with it to see if it will work that way I imagine it too.

The best idea here is using print a blocks as purge towers. I love the idea of expanding my sets for dnd/war gaming terrains while working on other prints and reducing waste.

These could also be printed vertically where you need a support. Just make the last few milimeters breakaway.

Joe Larson is the best, he's very helpful and easy to talk to. He runs the Library Makerspace in St. George, Utah, USA. They need a fundraiser for some current gen printers. The best printer they have is a Raise3D that is over 5 years old. He keeps a decade old Ultimaker 2 running there too.

purge into an object is a brilliant solution to the waste problem on multi-colour printing. I hope it becomes a standard feature for all slicers .

PrusaSlicer can also wipe into infill for colour changes, although I don't know if it currently supports using an entire part including walls

What do you mean? Isn't it open source? All the base blocks are open source. The themed kits are the ones for purchase but anybody can make kits from the base ones.
I wish him all the best, what a fantastic community products he has developed. I have no doubt that within a short time period there will be many community designed models using this system. I also have no doubt that, much like Lego, the complexity of models, and the component parts, will continue to rapidly develop.
I had to pack my printer away last year, but I know what I want to use to test it once set up and recalibrated later this year.

A short time period for community projects can easily be ten, or fifteen+ years, depending on how long it takes that community to become widely known outside of its core userbase. So when I say "Short time", and "Rapidly", I'm very much talking in terms of a product that is close to, but not at, visibility outside of that core of enthusiasts.

Interesting to me that purge into an object isn't working that well in Bambu Studio. It's copied from PrusaSlicer (I'm not sure if Slic3r had it too), but I've used it a number of times without issue doing Palette prints and I know people who use it for MMU prints. It's not the "solution" to getting rid of purge, but it can reduce it some amount (at least at early layers for something like PrintABlok). As for the system itself, it's been awesome seeing it progress from (IIRC) a response to Lego doing a take down of one of his files or videos, to a whole catalog of items.

Plain PLA is food safe by design. Many manufacturers use additives for different reasons. If a reputable manufacturer says it's safe, it's safe.

PLA, PETG?
It works well in PLA, but I find the connectors benefit from the additional flexibility of PETG.
I just asked myself if you could strengthen 3d prints with stabilizing epoxy for wood.
Only thing that comes to mind is that they can only be attached at right angles to eachother due to the peg shape, lego nubs are round and allow all angles
For now they are only (as far as we know) set at 90 degree angles. I find these as an awesome intro to give people a starting point to design their own compatible designs. You can easily make a wedge shaped design that is still easily printed and gives you more configurations.
There are angled pieces, hex blocks and octoblocks, and the like, so there's some creativity, but not full rotational connections. I wish that were possible, but I could not figure out how to do that and make them 3D printable.
Finally use my 3d printer for something useful lol I've been making cookie cutters as gifts for my horses show, making model train parts for stuff that doesn't exist and designing master casting molds for my 140 year old sawmill that I'm restoring

Enjoyed my stay a ton and we had the typical Colorado weather. Snow one night and TShirt weather the next day.
From the looks of it, they're more like k'nex - at least in the sense that they have separate male/female connectors. (I don't know if k'nex ever was sold outside the US. Even in the US, it clearly has/had a much smaller market share than LEGOs).
it's more like meccanos than legos.
(legos bonus as a toy was that it didn't need screws or something like that)
RokenBok was a similar concept too that’s worth a look for those who haven’t heard of it.
It also had rc vehicles /contraptions, and a sort of gbm game of sorts.
Electroblok can probably fill the role it/lego mindstorms had to an extent, but replicating and 3D Printing Rokenbok + making the game for it more polished is a goal of mine.
This is probably somewhere between Lego and Lego Technics, the latter of which does need connecting hardware

I personally have no issue with skilled designers asking for compensation for their designs. I think the 3D printing community sometimes suffers from the expectation that all 3D models should be free regardless of the amount of work that went into the design.
And then there's the issue of knockoff print farms selling your work for cheap as soon as you upload it... Locking your models behind a payment is the best way to deter this.
He has made it cheap and easy to profit off of his models - adding a sales license is a mere $5/mo patreon tier.
I think encouraging the open source mindset with 3D printing is a great thing to do, but at the same time the underlying standard and basic models are free, so I agree that charging a small fee for additional artistic parts on top of the base system is quite reasonable

Thingiverse ruined a lot of people, making them thing 3D models should be free.
And, it's fine, you know. I'm happy to make it available to people. On the other hand, there's a lot of designers who are really proud of their 3D models and selling a crap model they made in tinkercad in an hour and never test printed for more than you could buy a similar object at the store for. It's good to keep designers a little humble sometimes.

A bit expensive for my pocket due to unfavorable currency exchange rate. Still I'll print a base set, and if the kids enjoy it, I'll get the paid ones...
I tried to 3D print a lego base plate, but that failed badly. It's not suited not only for 3D printing, but also for PLA. The material must be a bit more flexible. OTOH I wonder how it would print on resin printer - can't try that as it's too messy...
You'd have to be using something like a Voron 0 to get good warping control on such small prints but Lego is made in ABS which is directly 3D printable, so you could fix the material issue at least
@@bosstowndynamics5488, I'd actually try ASA, as it is less likely to warp than ABS. The tolerances still will be an issue. The surviving parts of my test print were too loose ti work. Lego works so well because injection molding done well provides tight tolerances. Something rather hard on standard 3D printers.
Also Voron is too expensive to me. I have a humble Ender 3V2 with few basic mods that are cheap in my country...
@@urgon6321 Don't get me wrong, I still think the result wouldn't be very good, just adding that the material alone is fixable, even if tolerances/precision aren't (Vorons are good but even they have limits)

I don't know why, but I'm not a fan of the PrintABloks always needing "pins" in order to connect with one another.
If I have two blocks, I can't connect said blocks without a third component, that third component being the "pin".
I suppose you could 3D print one side of a block to have the pin built into the block, but then that could limit what you could do with that side of the block.
The pins are designed to print flat without supports, so making them out the side or whatever is kind of a challenge. However, I often leave connectors in the blocks, and just keep some extras on hand.
Le** technic also needs connectors. And connectors give more freedom for building experience

Think of it this way, if you buy one 30$ lego set, you have 1 set, but if you buy one set of files for 30$, you literally have an infinite amount of sets
Since kids like to chew on things, I think it's important to point out that you should use safe filaments that don't leech out anything unhealthy.
It shouldn't be an issue, as any kids young enough to chew on things are also too young to use this due to the choking hazard.
I don't know of many common 3D printing plastics that leech anything unhealthy.
Well, except for that limited run of aesbestosfill. Probably don't use that for anything you'll give to the kids.
The plural of "Lego" is "Lego". It's the bricks that you want to pluralize. Like "Lego Bricks".

You can always be "The cool uncle" (whether family or friend) that creates fun designs for the kids (maybe even the adult kids) to assemble when you visit.

Personally I'm a nihilistic minimalist that rather play with virtual blocks in videogames for the sake of simplicity, gives me the same contentment chemically. To me 3D printing is only for practical applications. Wish you success.

Needing to clarify that he asks money for his creations is insane to me. He put work in to them, why would he not? Yes he could have, but he is in no way obligated to put it online for free

No? Not much point in spending thousands of dollars to patent something only to immediately turn around and effectively unpatent it. Prior art already prevents someone else from jumping in and patenting it.
