  • In this video, I take a look at the fantastic funk four-piece, Vulfpeck. I delve into their ability to meld styles together, their brilliant online image, and the incredible virtuosity of Joe Dart. Having collaborated with the likes of Cory Henry, Bernard Purdie, and Bootsy Collins, Vulfpeck are a certifably funky band that are worth your attention.

      Woody Goss is Vulfpeck's Paul Desmond and Joe Dart is Joe Morello. If you can come up with a song, Joe can play it. Jack Stratton is the band's more wacky Dave Brubeck.

    Correction, Dean Town was written by Woody Goss, but I guess Joe was the one who transcribed it to bass. The lines are original of Woody.
    Great video analysis, I really like your take on everything, except the Joe Dart part. I get it he is out of this world, and really deserves to be in his own spot, as a Vulfpeck fan, I know well of that. But we mystify him so much, and deify him to a point where he is more than Vulfpeck. Maybe it's just your opinion, but I'm not a fan of Joe being placed higher than Jack, Woody, or Theo. Vulfpeck is all 4, it's not just Joe, it's not just Jack, not just Woody, and not just Theo. When they take the spotlight, the music sounds different, but all in all, they are Vulfpeck.

    Joe doesn't write alot right? Dean town was Woody's work, he sent a midi to Joe the day before or something like that.
    Joe said in an interview that he is mostly a session musician and Jack writes the most of it. That they go into the studio knowing nothing but maybe a voice memo from Jack. Then they do 2-3 takes and that's it.

    • @thebenevolentsun6575

      dont underrate him too much, a studio musician of joe’s quality is extremely hard to come by. joe might not be a composing genius like woody, but the craftsmanship that goes into his feel and improvisation needs to be recognized.

It doesn't seem that Aussie Rules has a goalkeeper. It seems as though the line is actually "team-ball".

    What separates Dart from other fast-playing bassists is he seems note-perfect. You can't imagine the notes needing to be different than what they are. (Very Mozart esque) He isn't doing scales and getting into the right notes, but every note feels much more intentional and musical than someone like Pastorius, Thundercat, Wooten etc.

  • @francise8698
    @francise8698 Před 3 lety

    One thing I really like about Joe Dart bass lines is I (a beginner) can actually play then.
    Most bass pieces I are either very basic backing tracks (Money, day Tripper, Rappers delighted) or solo performance by virtuoso that are borderline impossible (Victor Wooten, Jaco).
    Joe dart is a great middle ground where you can play them solo/with drums and sounds great, but they don't require insane skill level especially if you slow them down. His signature 'move' is to just play a full bar of the same 1/16th note for a minute or so.

    Completely agree with Paul Dano's quote in this video - It can be a little hard when musicians take themselves too seriously, because they are so much whichever race or ethnicity they are. So glad Vulfpeck has moved past how white they are, so they can be a good time, to quote Paul again. Hopefully more musicians can do this so they can be a good time too.

      @@koho In the video, Paul Dano says it would be hard to enjoy Vulfpeck because of how white they are, except that they don't take themselves too seriously, which allows Mr. Dano to look past their ethnicity and have a good time listening to their music. I was just saying how it is really great that Vulfpeck has figured out a way to not have their ethnicity taint the enjoyment of people like Mr. Dano, who understandably find the color or culture of musicians to be a primary concern. If all musicians took themselves a little less seriously, like Vulfpeck, people like Mr. Dano wouldn't have to expend as much time factoring how their ethnicity is really impacting their talent.
