- I know it’s a Subaru. It doesn’t look like a Subaru. It looks like a Suzuki Swift. The entire time I was filming this I kept referring to it as a Suzuki even though I knew it wasn’t one. I kept saying Suzuki. It’s maddening- it drives me nuts. As I was writing the narrative, I knew it’s a Subaru. But I kept saying Suzuki. I know it was a Subaru when I made the title card but I wrote Suzuki. This car is a test of wills.
"But, it doesn't look like a Subaru." said my eyes.
"It's a Subaru," I reiterated.
"It doesn't sound like a Subaru," said my ears.
"It's a Subaru."
"It doesn't feel like a Subaru," said my butt.
"It's a Subaru."
"It doesn't have a longitudinal boxer engine. It has a transverse four. It is front-wheel drive. The roof comes apart just like a Suzuki Cappuccino. It is short and stubby. This is a Suzuki product."
"NO! It's a SUBARU. Say the word SUBARU."
"...Imma say Suzuki"

@@olommentes Yep in the 🇺🇸 I used to see one on a regular basis a few yrs ago. Cool little car.
This looks like a car the popular girls would pull up in from a 90s movie when they're going to act like they want to hang out with the nerdy girl but it's all a trick and when she goes to get in that drive off laughing.
Also those vw cabriolet too

Definitely the VW Cabriolet. Red with black and white cow print seat covers.
Sounds specific. Like it though!

That was exactly my reaction. “It has what now?”
I thought he meant front seats.
You can only tell they're seats from the upholstery. Otherwise, shelf. He sure does like climbing back there, though.
5 mile seats.
I’m pretty sure the shelf on a C4 Corvette or a Mercedes SL500 has more room. Makes the jump seat in a Ford Ranger seem like the epitome of luxury.
Here's the thing : this car is nearly as far from today as it is from the Falcon. Think about it.

I'd rather not remember the 25 year old 1.3L hatch with collapsed suspension I had to drive last time I visited eastern Europe.
@Toxic Potato Lol. There’s nothing more irritating than being in the car with someone who will not upshift on the highway.

@@GlamStacheessnostalgialounge Black smoke means the owner or a friend "who knows" turned the injection pump up, so those go faster.

"It's great for the city and not much else"
Yes. It's a Kei-car. That's what they're for. City driving. They can, mostly, get from one city to another, but that is not their purpose. They are city cars, designed for a country 1/25th the size of the USA.
1/25th the size, 10 times the population density
"Ey, you jeeaaps! Wa's dis thin' can be pudded in de beck o'mah pick-up thruuuuug???"
On a 'true' cvt, the rpms 'are' how much power you are making. if you give it half throttle, it will give you whatever rpm is 'half' power. The revs shouldn't be a binary choice of idle or redline, there is still reason for a cvt to be between them. A honda fit is 'kinda' like that, but it still wants to climb revs while flooring.
Sorry, but no.. in a real cvt, that is exactly what it does.
It revs to it’s optimal working point and keeps it there.
Then the transmission (hopefully) adjusts accordingly.

CVT from the 90s? Never knew things like this exist.
Trivia is, CVT from this car has also been used in 1st gen Fiat Panda and Punto
Nissan actually paired a CVT with SR20DE in a SUV back in late 90s and SR20VE's with Primeras and Bluebirds
Look up DAF variomatic. CVT has been a gearing solution for decades
I think they were mostly in ATVs
The Subaru Justy (KAD aka gen 2) had a CVT as well along with button-press-on-demand 4WD. Apparently a great car, they just rusted away to dust easily.
Almost bought one this summer
Having an attractive woman driving a car with a clean interior feels "off brand" for RCR!
There was a pretty woman who owned the Elantra N Line.
@@SlitWristMisfit_ I think this is the same woman
Really? Quite a cool taste in cars
I thought that too actually but I wasn’t sure.
I’m not sure they’re the same woman. They’re both attractive black women. Which is rare in the car community in general, Nevermind on RCR
You think you don't need power steering, but keep in mind that these cars are driven in countries where highways are as wide as an average American living room.
People routinely drove on those roads without power steering for a hundred years, often in cars heavier than this. Yeah, sitting still it's a bit tough, but if you're moving at all it isn't.
@@markmiller3279 yes they did. Until the wonder of power steering was invented!
Power steering is for parking lots.. not highway driving.
That’s why old 70s boats are easy drive around town.. but very floaty on windy secondary highways. The dead and overboosted steering with no feel combined with the soft suspension make them difficult to control.
Which is why power steering became progressive in later years. Lots of boost at low speeds and almost none at high speeds.
@@calvinnickel9995 exactly. As I said. Keep in mind that highways in small European countries, highways, are more narrow than an average neighbourhood street in the states. Imagine that in Tallinn, where I live now, speed limit on the highway is 55.
The interior of the this car is glorious. Props to the owner.
The owner was lovely

@@lego4virgo I guess so
If I buy a car with a CVT I expect a smooth acceleration without the feel of shifting because it's pointless.
We just got a 20 Impreza sport and I’ve never felt it shift. Even if i click it into the “manual” mode where it simulates gears, when i click it down two gears there is no perceptible change in the car, only a change in the revs.
I drive it in both normal mode and the simulated manual mode because the torque curve does legitimately feel nicer to me in manual mode. So even though it technically has that kind of simulated shifting, I’ve never felt it or noticed it. Car feels perfectly smooth at all times, although very slow.
@@graumail My 2016 Forester doesn't "shift" either. Maybe it's only something w/ particular 2020/2021 models?
@@TheWolfMusic12 and here I am with my '02 Legacy where each gear does have a super big ratio gap that upshifting too soon enables Subaru's "douche rumble" and downshifting with the rpm a bit too high usually ends in a loud pop in the back
Sad that I live in a country where you can only buy either slow 4 speed auto or boring CVT under $20 grand. No paddle/powershift traditional auto in affordable prices.
@@graumail I have a 2018 impreza, and despite specifically asking if it faked shift points and being reassured that it doesn't, it very much does. however, I have driven a 2014 forester and it doesn't do that; it drives like a CVT should, and just keeps the rpms where they should be. it's incredibly annoying and I'm counting the days I can get back to a manual, despite loving the car otherwise.
Aww what a cute little car and the interior is so 90s I had flashbacks of me faking being sick so I can stay home and play sonic.
Subaru Vivio: official car of the person who says "these are so mainstream now" as soon as they see someone else driving one.
And if its in Europe since its average price there is under 700 euros
Woah! She has a shin chan mirror thing. I love this girl already
The feeling of being liked is what I get from driving my Mini JCW, and it's a part of why I enjoy driving it. Like the Suzuki, people are happy to see my Mini. Just the other day, I was on the freeway, and a guy in a 488 Pista came up from behind. When he saw me notice his car, he downshifted a few times and did a couple pulls. I think he knew he was making my day.
People suck, quit caring what they think. Remember, people want what they can't have so act like you don't want it.

9:54 love that they call the stereos ‘sound item’.
2:16 Before you even said it I thought to myself "if I were driving this car my mom would tell me to slow down or something because it sounds like im going fast"
Roman stole the show with that epic ending song 🤣
As soon as he said "just listen to it" the little ceaser cheezer ad starting playing and I laughed louder than I should have.
That interior tho! That's what makes the 90's JDM cars cool.
45mpg tho. That alone makes it perfect for a work commuter. It's basically motorcycle economy but with storage space and A/C.
The naming scheme VI VI 0/6 6 0 based on the diaplacement has to be one of the cleverest ones out there.

That’s because a snowmobile uses a CVT.

Pump the brakes there FloJo...I'm in tears
I imported a 93 vivio t-top last year, it doesn't have the wood trim on the dash, the mirrors are green on the bottom half, and yellow on the top. This isn't a fast car, it can't offroad, it's not aggressive. But this is a happy car. You can't drive it and not feel happy. 52hp is what a lot of city cars in Europe had up until around the early 2000s, hell even to this day many cheaper end city cars make do with 70-80hp and weigh substaintually more. My first car had 34hp and I took it everywhere, used to keep it up around 65-70mph for long trips at 4000rpm without missing a beat!
the first car i drove had 30hp and it was 1991 Zaz 968m. İt was hella fun but it was loud
I have a diesel volkswagen gol country. It has 60hp but it's zippy anyway
Wow what a suprised to see this get reviewed. My mom used to own the sport coupe version in manual in Greece and I I gotta say that was one of the most fun cars I've ever driven. And that's coming from a guy that owns a 370z lol. This car is definitely not a car for long straight roads, as soon as you take it to the track or back roads it's a BLAST!
Someone I worked with once worked for C and P phone company , later to change it's name to Verizon . Back in the 60's the company ordered a fleet of British cars called Helmen . .... I think that's the what he said .
They got the cars , loaded their tools and equipment .
The cars didn't have enough power to get up the mountain to get to the interstate . They had to drive back roads ,had to take extreme long way to get to their jobs .
This car reminded me of that story .
Be a great car to offer today with some modifications of course.

Subaru has been using CVT's in Japan since the 70's. Because of that and decades of development, Subaru has one of the most reliable CVT's in the world.
Am a sneakerhead, can confirm no one wears their Off White Jordans cause they paid 1000+ dollars and they only like having them to flex on people.

This would be a great electric conversion
I love how even the owner looks right out of 1994 to match the car
Mr. Regular is the ultimate expression of "weird white boy" and I love it.
This car is simply lovely. It’s interesting that even kei cars as small as this will often fit rear seats; yet the Mark 5 Toyota Supra failed to include 2+2 rear seats unlike every other previous Supra and the BMW M2 CS.
