30 Years ago (while station with the USAF in Bentwaters/Woodbridge, England) I spent half a day sitting right beside this guy, "Thomas Morgan Robertson"...on a train from Wodbridge to London. For some reason, of which I will never really know, he decided to open up to a total stranger that day and share a lot of personal things about himself with me. One of the many things he shared, was that he was on his way to the making this very video! Now 30 years later I am still revisiting both the memory of that day and of this video. Most of you know him as "Thomas Dolby" and for his smash hit "She Blinded Me With Science" I have the most cherrished memory of knowing him as "Thomas Robertson" and moreover for this highly under rated now classic genous "I LOVE YOU GOODBYE" of the 1992 "Astronauts and Heretics" album. Please click and enjoy and thanks for sharing this with me on this now 30th Year Anniversary of my event and this classic!

How many have ever successfully combined complex synthesizer orchestration with Cajun Fiddle and Accordion in a heart wrenching story of his farewell to the music industry? One of Dolby's relatively undiscovered gems as it was post 80s hit era. The song sets an incredible mood and atmosphere and tells a very cinematic story like all of the best songwriters can do. Haunted is a great adjective to describe how this song makes you feel. Definitely has the feel of unrequited love, adventure and mischief, perfect for Louisiana. Mr. Dolby is an underrated songwriter and producer, most listeners of the era heard "She Blinded Me With Science", great song, but that's as far as they dove. The smarter ones bought the albums and really dove deep to discover his keenly lyrical, catchy and intrinsic musical genius.

What truly excels to me is the longevity and endurance of him and Kathleen. The nerd got the girl.,.cheers mate.

I found this beautiful song 5 days ago and I'm in love with it...
Thank you Thomas, casue this masterpiece really touch something inside me. I lost my grandpa a year ago. June 30 will be the day. Some days I smile, because of all that times that we shared a great moment. Some days I feel really depressed because his last couple years I had my head on complicated stuff and I distanced a little from him, indirectly. What makes me feel really bad is that he tried to talk with me a couple times, he wanted to say something to me, but I don't really know where the fuck I had my mind cause I answered him "Yeah", let's go for a coffee or smth like that but I really didn't try to see him. Then his illness got worse and he couldn't left his home. I went to visit him a many times his last months, the last time, 3 days before he passed... He was very happy to see me, I was very happy to see him... June 30, 2021, my family called to tell me he was in his final moments... He was sleep when I arrived at the hospital... In peace. 30 minutes later, he was gone... I like to think that he was waiting for me... That he wanted to say goobye...
I understand that time will help me and my family... But man, it's so rough... But that's just the way it is...
"Some words are hard to say, some leave me tounge-tide. "The hardest words I know: I love you, goodbye..."

I loved this song so much when he released ‘Astronauts & Heretics’ in 1992; I’d loved Dolby’s two key hits (Science and Hyperactive) in the early 80s, but had lost track of his output after that until I started properly buying records in 1990. The release of ‘Close But No Cigar’ led me to voraciously seeking out his entire back catalogue on CD, and then THIS song... just blew me away. The spine-tingling piano solo, the Cajun vibe, all so “un-Dolby-like”, and yet at the same time so perfectly Dolby-esque!
It’s safe to say I adored ‘I Love You Goodbye’ from the very beginning.
I only discovered much later, thanks to reading his brilliant 2017 memoir ‘The Speed of Sound’, that the song’s meaning was, at the time, in fact Dolby’s farewell to the music industry machine that he become so jaded by, but perhaps more so to the musical artistry that he so dearly loved (so glad that he finally made his way back to it again in 2011).

I have such love for this song. I learned about this album reading music reviews in the Sunday Advocate at my grandmother’s house in Baton Rouge. My teenaged self took a risk on buying that CD, and it has been one of the best music purchases I ever made.
I couple years later, we moved my Louisiana French grandma to live with us in Texas, and she died a few years later.
Since then, I have hardly ever set foot in Louisiana, but it was so much a part of my childhood, I get misty hearing the words of an outsider inside.
I’ll forgive him for saying “county” instead of “parish”. ;-)

Thomas Dolby is THE master of Fairlight technology, his genius lays in the engineering and sound production, studying intensely other sounds and piecing them together to produce incredible symphonic sound scrapes. He IS a musical genius. He is still way ahead of the game, as are Prefab Sprout - listening to these sounds today, they are lush, original and breath taking.

I honestly with respect, could not imagine a video that misrepresented the intention of a song that was so off target than this.... it's not a case of say what you see (hear) it is a travesty how far it missed the mark. The song is a beautiful composition ❤ absolute genius ❤️

I come back to this song every now and then. Some questions about the lyrics, if anyone knows. Supposedly this song is based upon Dolby's experiences. Questions: Why did he leave her? Was she too impulsive and getting him into dangerous situations? The song opens with him still in New Orleans, so it's not like he moved far away (as the video might imply). Heck, if he had the money to bribe off a Sheriff then why did they steal the Datsun to begin with 🙂

I think you might possibly be approaching this a bit too literally? He's alluded to in interviews that this song was his metaphoric farewell to the commercial music industry. It's like dissecting Joni Mitchell lyrics, she often paints with lyrics, they convey color, texture, mood and emotion more than literal stories. To me, even though they are very different artists, both have a similar lyrical approach.
Sometimes great lyricists use particular lines and devices to set a mood more in the listener than to write a short novel. For me, the story he writes alludes to his various experiences and adventures as a British expat in the South, which may or may not have actually involved stealing a Datsun, being arrested by a crooked Southern Sheriff and an unrequited romance. Even if none of it ever happened, they are great lyrics and paint really vivid images in the listeners imagination. And that's the mark of a great songwriter.

    LYRICS
I would never normally go bowling
On a friday morning in New Orleans
But I like to come here to remember
The kind of places you took me
Like the time we stole a Datsun
And drove all night to the everglades
Until we crashed it in a big electric storm
And stood there listening to the bayou rain
The county sheriff had a hair, lip
    Louisiana's pride and joy
He said politley as he cuffed me
"I never busted an English boy
But I will accept a contribution
    To the Opelousas' Charity Ball
But you better drive this dirty Datsun
    Into the Gulf of Mexico"
Under a Cajun moon I lay me open
There is a spirit here that won't be broken
Some words are sad to sing
    Some leave me tongue-tied
(But the hardest thing to tell you)
But the hardest words I know
    Are I love you goodbye
    I love you goodbye
Typhoon Pierre delayed my plane till morning
    (Jusqu'au matin)
Let the bontemps rouler from your accordion
    (L'accordien)
Under a cajun moon I lay me open
    (Y a un esprit partout)
There is a spirit here that won't be broken
(Simple words are sad to sing
Some words are sad to sing
    (They leave me tongue-tied)
    Some leave you tongue-tied
(But the hardest thing to tell you my friend)
But the hardest words I know
    (Is I love you goodbye)
    Are I love you goodbye
    (Je t'aime, au revoir)
    I love you goodbye
    (Je t'aime, toujours)
    I love you, goodbye
