Years ago, I was playing something, and my late-husband handed me the OG Silent Hill, and said:' You will LOVE this game!' I did, and I still do! That's my intro into the Silent Hill franchise! I still have the copy he got me, I also have SIlent Hill 2! I have played all the others on my future son-in-law's X-BOX 360! I even have both Silent Hill movies! This is just my opinion, but, they didn't deserve the flak they got! The OG Silent Hill will always be my favorite! The sounds that they used was SO good! The gameplay matched the sounds greatness! I recently watched Twin Peaks and can see the inspiration in the early silent hill series with some of the music and dialogue and overall feel. The diner/cafe scene where you wake up and meet cybill, that music sounds like the twin peaks! Crazy. I know this might be public knowledge but I never realised it and thought it was all Jacobs Ladder! Great playthrough as always bawk 👌
That comment about the young kid being too scared to play SH1 really resonates with me as it reminds me of playing SH for the first time as a kid. Having played RE1 prior and not being bothered much by it I was totally unprepared for the kind of trauma SH1 had in store for me and my friends. The horror that SH pushes is just so much more nuanced and adult than what's on offer in RE games and especially as a kid it's very hard to process without coming away deeply unsettled.

PS2 was the best selling but there was something truly special about the ps1 graphics, the whole system has it's own art style. Just like people love pixelart I'm pretty enamored with ps1 art.
30:00 Talking about maps in games, as a teen when I first played this game Silent Hill when I reached the Alchemillia Hospital section I didn't noticed the map was in the entrance of the hospital and I had to play that hell section without a map for the FIRST TIME and the smart move should be drawn a map in a notebook but instead the stupid me didn't thought about it and memorized the entire map of the hospital so I don't know if I was dumb of not think about drawing a map as I play or really impressive for memorizing the map of the entire hospital from the normal world and the otherworld and also beat the crap out of the boss with the hammer only because my cousins said the could go beyond this part of the game because they run out of ammo and said it was impossible to win this boss without ammo, so I took the challenge and beat it lmao.

At the part where Bawk is talking about the piano puzzle… I DISTINCTLY REMEMBER my brothers had to go out and buy the actual strategy guide, JUST to get past that puzzle 🤣. I recently started playing the Silent Hill Games, I finished Silent Hill 1 two days ago and I must say I had a lot of fun! I am excited to see these Bawk runs as I go along the game myself!
I solved the piano puzzle in 20 minutes without himts and I'm super proud of myself. I now have a heep of papers just with my thoughts on puzzles in SH games and it all started here.
Love the playthroughs man! And make no mistake, we love that you take time to appreciate things like the sound design in the game. It is truly one of a kind and so many others games drew inspiration from SH

I've got 3 buddies I play all kinds of horror games with. I'm the youngest one at nearly 35. We get scared easy and hate solo horror games (still play them cuz we're idiots). Playing together we feel brave until we inevitably separate and we're all screaming and jumping. 2 of the squad are fathers (I'm one of them) and hearing the sounds that come out of 4 grown men because something spooky happened is hilarious (to the other 3!). I just got back into Silent Hill today after not getting further than the school entrance back in 2000 because I was too scared. Still scared, but I'm gonna finish it.

You might need to experiment with the piano a bit, to understand that there are keys that don't make noise and connect it to the poem, but you don't have to do extra math on it or anything. The coolest part of this puzzle is how hard it *seems* on its face, but how easy it really is. I feel it does a nice job of fitting into a sort of "dream logic" for the setting, without being totally absurd.
Music did get to me as a 14 yr old and it still reminds me of my first play brings me chills all the time music is all that makes it errie and bizarrely more frightening trying to hug thru the walls hoping nurse isn't there to wack u with their diseased ass knife rdy to haunt your blood with nightmare and virus that will make your eyes roll backwards listening to your self yelling in pain fainting down the hallways as the nurse chase. U gonna wish u had Lisa save uwith her presence for just a few good minutes of hope just to relieve yourself from fingers shaking out from fear to then realize Lisa was the worst of all good and bad nurse,tricking u w good conversation. Something about Lisa trying to bring u hope from this hospital is u seemingly incredible but u feel trusting a dead nurse is a bad idea..yet she is only hope u got in this nightmare hospital to save you from shaking in your own blood. ;p
that piano puzzle had me stumped for ages, but i figured it out myself. the whole part about flying higher then the other bird is telling you the position on the piano of the key you need to press in order. i had it down to where i could read it and figure it out as i went pretty quickly.
About the monsters in this game not making any sense like SH2, you are absolutely wrong. Just like SH2, every one of them is shaped by someone's imagination. They are Alissa's fears mixed with the childhood fictional stories she read. You can see her drawings of some of the monsters in her room.

Did the bird puzzle for the first time yesterday. I read it like 10 times, ignoring the title every time. Only reason I figured it out was because of the number of keys. Great puzzle.
Hideo Kojima games were really revolutionary at the time they are still impressive when u consider they are Ps1 games I remember Mgs and silent hill came out when out when I was 7 and to this day they are definitely in my top 5 for fav ps1 games

usually ppl hate homecoming just by the battle mech, wich are a bit scuffed, but if you get the hang of ti, its actually not that bad, besides the ost is one of the best from the games, which make it worth playing, the story is also great, aside from the apparition of PH and SH2 nurses, but imo they are a great addition and behave just like in the movie, besides if you pay attention to sh2, PH was a representation from james based on silent hill executioners (which even had different pyramid hats), which means there is more that one, as you discover right before the end.

Although..she collected butterflies and Harry gets attacked by a giant one, or moth. Also Harry's model is very smooth in this, in normal ps1 the edges are definitely a lot more squared. I wonder how a retrotink 5x will do. Oh with the map, the nowhere area at the end is confusing as sht! Though I think you don't even have a map either lol. It goes perfect with the fever dream music, as the layout could only exist in a dream. The piano puzzle..that got me stuck as a kid, SH3's hard puzzles are brutal, the Shakespeare books and hospital stalker key code. I had to look up the book puzzle. 1:14:30 I think this is called code blue, the backing sound before it heats up sounds like piano keys. The shadows in the basement theme though is the darkest in this game. Closest to this music is dark ambient and harsh EBM, check out Carastrophe and No Way Out by Grendel.
Bawk, I hope someday to watch you play a game from PS1 called Hellnight, it's not a clone from anything, it has a unique gameplay style, it's hard and towards the end it's confusing without a guide but it's an interesting game.
I wish I watched this before finishing playing silent hill on duckstation because I didn't know about all the graphics improvement settings that basically make the game look like a remaster KEKW. At least I got the original experience (which gave me almost a headache due to how grainy and pixelated it is).

I'm super stoked for sh2 remake but I do think konami should do a remake of the first 1 first. Huge portion of gamers haven't played a silent hill game, let alone the original. I do understand sh2 is the most popular among fans. Doing re2r worked because capcom did have a re1 remake even though it is older but re1r is on every platform and easily available to play so it made sense for capcom to do re2 next and u don't necessarily have to play re1 first to fully understand re2r. I guess u could say the same about sh2 but I feel like u r missing out on a chunk of the story. Hopefully in the sh2r there will be a cutscene that kind of quickly explains the events of silent hill 1. Either way, I'm so excited
Hearing Bawk talk at ~ 1:13:30 about how great Enh Sham seems in Dragonflight, when I was an Enh main From WotLK to WoD before quitting, coming back in Shadowlands and being massively disappointed from how awful Enhance was, almost makes me want to give it another go when the expansion drops... Almost.

What would be cool as something to play in October would be the first Red Dead Redemption DLC called Undead Nightmare. It isn’t the full game, but I played that recently. Thought that was pretty interesting as a DLC.
my first time playing SH3 i think i tried hard mode. i remember a book puzzle i had no clue and it was rented and im like 🤯 ok in way over my head lol. promptly restarted.
SH1 will forever be my favorite SH game, the kind of pure horror and overall atmosphere this game has is so unique, also perfect OST, ohhh and Harry Mason = best dad in videogames After the SH2 remake, its such a shame that they didnt went for SH1 instead, dont get me wrong, i'd rather they didnt remade any SH game, but if they where gonna, SH1 is clearly the one that has the most potential as a remake, also it is slightly harder to fuck up than SH2 (and based on the trailer alone, yep, they probably will fuck it up lol)
Composers had to get creative when using midi / synthesizers. That is why these older games have unique / industrial sounds. However, I am still glad that real orchestra usage became common in videogames.
Still the best SH followed closely by SH3. It really used the PS1's limitations to maximize the horror and the soundtrack, the sheer depth they went to create it? Masterful. This game will never stop spooking me and it's always a pleasure to see a playthrough of it so thanks!
I like Halloween Ends Lori made sacrifices to give Haddonfield the long time peace it deserves . Silent Hill is never going to stop the nightmares will always continue on and we all don't mind that .
Only 50 minutes in but I’ll say something regarding the homecoming vs downpour stuff. For me, at least, while HC is just uninspired paint-by-numbers Silent Hill I find downpour to just be a Bad Game. I think some ppl hate HC more cos it is “Can I copy your homework, don’t worry I’ll make some changes to make it different enough” which I get cos it’s true but I’m “fine” with it I guess. Downpour is a mess on an Alone in the Dark 2008 level tho and I’ve never understood how anyone loves it. The story is bad, the monsters are bad, can’t even do story weather effects when that’s the game’s hook lol (oh and your choices affecting the characters’ backstories is also dumb as hell as it invalidates the story being told during the game)

Hearing Bawk talk at ~ 1:13:30 about how great Enh Sham seems in Dragonflight, when I was an Enh main From WotLK to WoD before quitting, coming back in Shadowlands and being massively disappointed from how awful Enhance was, almost makes me want to give it another go when the expansion drops... Almost.

What would be cool as something to play in October would be the first Red Dead Redemption DLC called Undead Nightmare. It isn’t the full game, but I played that recently. Thought that was pretty interesting as a DLC.
my first time playing SH3 i think i tried hard mode. i remember a book puzzle i had no clue and it was rented and im like 🤯 ok in way over my head lol. promptly restarted.
SH1 will forever be my favorite SH game, the kind of pure horror and overall atmosphere this game has is so unique, also perfect OST, ohhh and Harry Mason = best dad in videogames
After the SH2 remake, its such a shame that they didnt went for SH1 instead, dont get me wrong, i'd rather they didnt remade any SH game, but if they where gonna, SH1 is clearly the one that has the most potential as a remake, also it is slightly harder to fuck up than SH2 (and based on the trailer alone, yep, they probably will fuck it up lol)
Hopefully there will be a Silent Hill 2 walkthrough.

Still the best SH followed closely by SH3. It really used the PS1's limitations to maximize the horror and the soundtrack, the sheer depth they went to create it? Masterful. This game will never stop spooking me and it's always a pleasure to see a playthrough of it so thanks!

Only 50 minutes in but I’ll say something regarding the homecoming vs downpour stuff.
For me, at least, while HC is just uninspired paint-by-numbers Silent Hill I find downpour to just be a Bad Game. I think some ppl hate HC more cos it is “Can I copy your homework, don’t worry I’ll make some changes to make it different enough” which I get cos it’s true but I’m “fine” with it I guess.
Downpour is a mess on an Alone in the Dark 2008 level tho and I’ve never understood how anyone loves it.
The story is bad, the monsters are bad, can’t even do story weather effects when that’s the game’s hook lol (oh and your choices affecting the characters’ backstories is also dumb as hell as it invalidates the story being told during the game)
