European countries recognition of Palestine: too little too late? | UpFront

  • Marc Lamont Hill discusses the latest move towards recognising Palestinian statehood with analyst Mouin Rabbani.
On May 28th, Norway, Spain, and Ireland will officially recognise Palestine as an independent state, joining the more than 140 other countries that have already done so, in a move they hope will pressure Israel and its allies to find a solution to the war. However, the US and other major Western powers have long opposed unilateral recognition, arguing instead that a two-state solution should come after peace talks.
The announcements have been heavily criticised by Israel, claiming it was “rewarding terrorists”. Meanwhile, Hamas called this new recognition a “turning point”.
Will this mark a significant shift in the West’s position on the conflict? Or is it, as some critics have said, too little, too late?
This week on UpFront, Marc Lamont Hill speaks to Jadaliyya co-editor Mouin Rabbani.

The Irish Parliament and Senate have already (over a year ago) passed a law banning products made in the occupied territories but the executive won't implement it. What people outside don't realise is that the Irish government (executive part) were initially on Israel's side. It's the reaction of the Irish people to what is happening that is causing them to do what they are doing. If you listen to the speech that the Irish representative made, you will understand what I mean. The Irish people understand the Palestinian people's position because the same methods were used to suppress Nationalist Catholics in Northern Ireland by the British. They used imprisonment without trial, murder of civilians and more importantly misinformation about what was happening was given to the outside world by the BBC, while outside media who went there had to go through the British army and were controlled by it.

The solution to resolving the Israeli and Palestinian conflict is First, Israel must immediately stop its arrogance and violence in controlling its territory and comply with all UN resolutions. Second, with the recognition of two countries, namely the state of Israel and the state of Palestine, both countries must be willing to accept the division of their respective territories in accordance with international law under UN supervision. Third, recognition of the territorial division of each country, namely that the territory of the State of Israel constitutes 2/3 of the territory it controls, while the territory of the State of Palestine constitutes the remaining 1/3 of its territory. Included in the territory of the Palestinian state are the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and the Aqsa Mosque area. With a solution to recognize the two countries and divide this region, it is hoped that the conflict in the Middle East will subside and become a peaceful region.

Can someone give me some clarification please. Firstly I stand with the Palestinian people and condemn the atrocities and ruthlessness committed by the IDF, Israeli government and those monsters in human appearance who blocked the road and damaged the humanitarian supplies for the victim of a one sided slaughter in Gaza. But from the perspective of the Palestinian and Arab/muslim world, was the goal to only get recognition for a Palestinian state or literally erase Israel from the map and officially establish the whole region as the land of Palestine and most probably governed by an Islamic ideology ? How does the status quo change ? What was the initial goal for the terrorist attack of Hamas (not freedom fighters sorry) and as a consequence so many children who lost their lives, others will probably live as orphans and cripples ?

Every party has an opinion on the borders of these 2 states. There is just no consensus on the borders. And none of these 2 parties are going to give up Jerusalem. There is only an ideal without a viable solution.
