A tutorial/vlog on how I dyed my hair from light blonde to dark chocolate brown at home using Wella Demi-Permanent hair color. Dying your hair from light to dark at home is luckily a much simpler process than bleaching it. With a proper strand test and even application, it's pretty foolproof even for hair dying rookies!

I’m so glad I did a test on one piece of my hair first, because when I added the red it turned a dark purple. I just used the chestnut and dark drown together and my hair turned out black. So if you have short thin hair I don’t suggest the dark brown color unless you want black hair.

What a great tutorial! You look fantastic with your natural color. I also add demi permanent color to my lite shampoo to keep from fading. I use L'Oreal Root Cover in medium brown (which looks more like a dark brown), to deepen color around my face, it's easy and washes out. Condition!! I love Ion products.

This is SO ME. Down to every single detail that i did to my hair.. Although i did end up coloring the front of my hair pink first before i dyed the rest back to dark brown. Because i get too bored with just one color way too fast
Thank you for this it helped me a lot. My hair was a muddy golden yellow blonde, I wanted brown and I didn’t know how to do it lol. I mixed somewhat equal parts of 5R and 4N (4N is an alternative of 3N, 4N is medium natural brown, because I didn’t want my hair to be too dark), and I added a bit of 3N to make it darker. My hair still ended up a bit darker than I wanted it to be. In the light it’s like a dark reddish brown. But I still like the results, and it’s going to fade anyway. So advice for others: definitely do a strand test. Don’t use 3N unless you want to end up with really dark hair when you wash the dye out (ur hair will fade Bc it’s demipermanent dye, so if u want dark hair then use 3N). Use 4N to end up with lighter brown hair. Don’t add too much of 5R if you don’t want a red tint in ur brown hair.

We both started of with the same shade of blonde but only about half a inch of my roots are dark brown fading into a platinum.
I got balayage last month and I wanna go back to dark brown but I don’t waste the 170$ it cost me

This is the exact dilemma I am in right now and I have the same natural color. I have Clairol darkest brown semi permanent in right now because Im not sure my strands can handle a developer just yet. Last weeked I went through a color correction at the salon to go from blue to brown. I left the salon in good condition but in 2 washes I was back to muddy medium brown 😭

So, I actually used this exact same combo thanks to this video! But I’m wondering how often I should apply this dye? It’s already started washing out, obvi. But do I need to wait until it’s all washed out back to the bleached hair? Will it become too dark if I apply it as it fades but is still brown? Thanks.

Do you necessarily need to use a developer? Or do bleach your hair before putting the brown hair dye in, then put the brown hair dye in? Sorry Im confused haha seems complicated

Doesn't the dye damage your hair?
It depends on the condition of your hair. If you have platinum "good" condition hair, you dont need a lot of lift so 20 vol is adequate. All demi and permanent dyes damage your hair to some degree. If you have platinum hair in a dry damaged unruly state, semi permanent is best because even 10 vol might be just enough too harsh to fry it. In those circumstances its better to be safe than sorry, so do a lot of masks and treatment before trying a semi permanent natural color. I would say "Go to a professional." However, not all professionals are created equal so choose wisely ☺

I don't get the quality difference in box dye in the UK vs US, like, here in the UK box dye works fine/is standard to use for home dying, not like, the cheap shitty version that doesn't work properly or fades out super quick 😶

This turned my hair almost black 😭 to anyone considering doing this leave the hair dye on for 15 mins or less or until you see hair color changing to a light brown unless you’re ok with black hair :/
Your hair is likely more porous then hers is. Everybody has different hair types and it's important to understand yours if you're going to be self dying. Asian hair is the strongest type of hair and so can take a lot more of a beating than other types of hair. That's why the strand test is so important andy why box dyes don't work, there's no one size fits all to hair
