The Unfortunate Career Of The Ataris & Kris Roe

  • The Ataris were one of the more successful pop-punk & punk-rock bands back in 2003, with their album So Long Astoria being certified gold.
    This genre of music was extremely commercially successful at the time, with bands like Simple Plan & Good Charlotte beginning to take off, whilst Blink 182 were selling out stadiums.
    They still have a decent following and play regularly, however they’ve ran into some trouble along the way - this video is going to cover the unfortunate career of Kris Roe & The Ataris including
    2 members left just 2 years after So Long Astoria
    They then had to leave Columbia Records soon after
    Followed by guitar player John Collura leaving in 2008
    Mike Davenport has had issues
    Kris Roe has missed gigs / shows on tour and more

      Reminds me of good times. I remember them coming on the radio as we were leaving my high school graduation, on the way to, what would, be an awesome party
      Then, that summer. Not having any responsibility. Waking up every day, going to the river, drinking with my friends, knowing I better enjoy those days while I had them. I knew it wouldn't last forever, so I enjoyed every day to the fullest.
      I miss those days.. but I'm glad that I grew up, instead of being the weird, old guy at the party

It's been almost 20 years since the album was released and I still listen to it religiously. I believe everything Kris Roe sang in it. Recently there was a good news. The Ataris are coming to my country in November and, finally, after 20+ years, I'll get to watch them live.

    I went to see them from around 2008 to 2011 and I can confirm they did routinely play small venues with small crowds, but I have to really give Kris some credit. He mingles with the crowd during the opening acts and is just a really down to earth, nice guy (at least he was to me). I have a tremendous amount of respect for him and his writing. He may have some personal issues and it’s ridiculous to throw gear at your band mates, but For what it’s worth, he seems like a good guy and I always enjoyed seeing him.

My friends encouraged me to and I awkwardly went up and just held out my hand, he wasn’t sure what to do and had a beer in the hand I was trying to shake. Talk about awkward! But anyway, the show was amazing and after he and the band stand and sold merch! My second attempt to meet him went much better. A super nice guy and a true hardworking musician! I heard that one reason the original members left is because Kris Roe got sober and fired the rest of the band to protect gis sobriety. Im not sure how true that is, but if it is, I get it.
    Im lead to believe theres a lot of ego involved, and it really is ashame. They could have been huge. They now fit in this really gray place where they are an influential garage band. They play to practically no one, make crap money, and dont sell records, but the wrote a truly great record in 2003 that stuck with the teenagers who loved it long after we grew up.

I think Rufio opened for them, and I really loved that band at the time. But I was blown away with the ataris set, the crowd was super into it. I will always remember that show because someone in the ataris through a guitar into the crowd and there was a massive swarm of people battling for it, and I remember security dragging this shirtless guy out of the pit who was all bloody. I've been a big fan of the Ataris since the late 90's. Anywhere But Here and Blue Skies have been on my top ten favorite albums forever. I finally, finally, finally got to meet Kris Roe when they toured in the mid 2010's. Kris was running his own merch booth. Even though I was the only one buying a sweatshirt at the time, he was a little gruff, and only begrudgingly obliged to a photo. I understand the road must be grueling, and he probably gets asked for photos all the time, but it was a disappointing way to meet someone I've adored and respected for so long.

    The Ataris was my favorite band along New Found Glory; Kris was kinda my hero and i was so into all of their music. When they put out "the graveyard of the atlantic" during the myspace era i used to design layouts for that site and i offered a custom made layout that Kris loved, then we started talking regulary, we were friends on facebook, and he replied all of my emails (it was like a dream come true); he promised that he'd send me a 7" when it was pressed and some personal photographies, the ataris memorabillia or random stuff; to me it wasn't about the amount of money that these objects may worth but to me it meant the world man, it was my hero, then he never sent me anything and lost contact. I won't say that Kris is a douche because it's not but he kinda broke my heart broken his promise. Anyways, i'll always love The Ataris but they're no longer my favorite. New Found Glory is still my favorite band haha, i had the chance to hung out with the dudes on NFG a couple times and they're awesome. I knew some of the members in the late 00s and what you're talking about all rings true. I believe that three or four of the members at that time were in a band around then called Park Ranger (I don't know them personally) and I heard their song "National Act" is about how poorly treated and underpaid they were as members. "Be grateful / say thank you for this opportunity / cuz you're going somewhere that you've never been / on a red-eye, coach-class, long line American Dream / for absolutely nothing." It's a good song.
    IIRC one of their tours from that era was so poorly attended, and overbooked (meaning they were playing 1,000 person venues to 100 kids) that everyone got home and quit on him. They weren't making any money and Kris was allegedly a notorious asshole to deal with.
    No idea if that's changed since then, but he sounded like a narcissist, a person who believed that his band was the second coming and more important than anything else in the world. Really, they were just a mediocre band during a mediocre era of popular music and there's not much nostalgia for them to cling to. Most of their fans have kids and families now. There are lots of bands from that era that managed to put together some successful tours, having developed a huge fanbase through word of mouth and streaming, e.g American Football and Mineral. No one's going to see The Ataris on a Wednesday for $25. It's just not happening.

    • @darrenthetuber743
      @darrenthetuber743 Před 7 měsíci

      Yeah the band hand no gas after that initial success, and labels usually don't drop a band after a successful album, but the label must have saw the ceiling for the band sooner than they did (the last rock band to make it big off a cover at that point was Alien Ant Farm, who had no chart gas after "Smooth Criminal"). Also, The Ataris were an average band who made a banger of an album, unfortunately So Long Astoria felt the strongest statement they were capable of, like were never capable of better than this. Something Corporate suffered a similar situation, but it's frontman wisely went solo

    So I knew Kris back in the day (he helped my band a lot back in the early 2000s)... he's a nice guy but can rub some people the wrong way simply because he's a perfectionist.
    Personally, I think the bands downfall has more to do with pop punk losing steam. And the sound of the band "matured" at the same time. Thats just how it goes sometimes.

      I mean pop punk is having a resurgence and the The Ataris were one of the best in the genre IMO. They seemed to be on the cusp of making it huge and then...nothing. i remember buying End Is Forever and Blue Skies on release day at my local cd shop. Met Kris back then and he was super nice. Met him years later and didnt seem the same. Not sure what happened

    • @mskcrc
      @mskcrc Před 2 lety

      @@markshadows3667 The problem is that the genre had a major "moment" and then it faded into more of a niche for jaded suburbanites and mall crawlers. Being the best of the studded-belt emo-pop-punk era is like saying your tattoo is the best of the tramp stamps.
      And yeah, can you imagine believing that your band is on the cusp of stardom, and just a few years later, you're playing shitty clubs for pennies when some of your contemporaries went on to headline festivals? No wonder he's (allegedly) a prick.

      I totally agree with this. I was TM for a band on tour with them in 2012. We were on tour with them for about 5 weeks. I was there the night he threw the drums. Band I was with played right before them.
      My relationship with Kris was great and he taught me a great deal. I was in the room with he and I and promoter where Kris should have and could have been a huge asshole because show got moved to small venue, not many ppl showed up and were promised a good amount of money that the promoter obviously didn't make. He made sure our band and other opener got paid and worked out agreement with young promoter and was great learning experience for the guy who was just starting out and was way over his head negotiating deals.
      Kris is professional and pleasant to fans, other bands and most he interacted with along the tour until someone doesn't hold up their end of the deal. At that point he needs to learn how to handle those times better. Kris might not be the best communicator in these cases. He is very different to the band mates.
      He is a perfectionist and demands himself and mates continue to strive for a perfect show. He expects to get better every night and definitely isn't just going through the motions. As a fan, I think that's pleasing to hear that he wants it to be his best performance every time he plays.
      The weirdest part of everything is there social interaction outside of the show. Kris always drove the bands van and they all had assigned seats. Might not seem like a big deal, but they hung a curtain between front and back seats like they were 1st class and 2nd class in a plane.. He also didn't sell any Ataris merchandise. He sold his main album and then sold Kris Roe art and photography..
      I enjoyed watching this and reading comments. After the blowing up at drummer in Asbury Park NJ he played the last 3 nights by himself and he opened for band I was with to finish the tour out.
