Just need my son real quick. He pulled me to the side and said, “you shouldn’t play things you don’t know what you’re doing. This kid has doctored dice”. I said “what’s that mean, daddy?”. He said finish up and get home. I’ll show you. I get home, he has dice at the kitchen table. He says let’s play, and I’ll shoot. I said ok. He stops me. He said, “mistake #1. You didn’t even touch these dice. You just let me bring my own dice, you didn’t roll them, you didn’t inspect them. Since you said go ahead, put your penny up”. Daddy continued to roll 7 or 11 7 straight times. He stops and asks, “you done losing your money?”. I said yes sir. He then teaches me about hustling. He showed me how he did it by filing and smooothinf out the corners, but he answer showed me other ways. He then taught me to never, ever not check out the device, be it dice, playing pool, etc. he then told me to always ask the rules because each hood has a different set. Get it stated. And, then he taught me NEVER take your eyes off the device, and don’t pull out your money. Keep your winnings and losses to yourself. You should be able to memorize how ouch you’re holding. I always liked the episode of Family Matters where a bully is about to beat up Urkel and Eddie, after ignoring and belittling Urkel all episode, shows up to save him. And this was later season stuff, Darius McCray was at least 6-4 and 220 pounds and had horrifically outgrown his kid character. Needless say, it didn't go well for the bully.
I love this episode its my favourite the way uncle Phil hustled those guys like a pro and then pulled the rug right out from under them. I think we now know how uncle Phil paid for law school 🤣🤣
James Avery's performance is amazing in this scene. He completely sells being a nervous klutz who can't even hit the ball, to the badass pool shark that he was all along. His body language and the tone in his voice just bring it all together like a well prepared meal.
And that is not easy to do. Max Grodénchik had a reoccurring role on Star Trek DS9. In one episode, they decided to do a bit of fun and play a baseball game. His character was supposed to be terrible. Unfortunately, Max Grodénchik had played Minor League Baseball for several years. He physically couldn't play baseball poorly. They just had he play with his off hand.
There are two things I really love about this scene. The first one being how Geoffrey was totally in on the hustle with Uncle Phil. The other being how much fun Uncle Phil is having while hustling these guys. There’s just something really fun about seeing him cut loose and have a good time. A part of me believes that he’s actually happy that Will messed up this time.

It's the things that he does like that that makes it extra hurtful when Will says to Uncle Phil's face in the episode where his father leaves (again) "You are not my father!" There's literally years of character development that shows that Uncle Phils is obviously the father figure that Will needed but never had.
The other good part was at the end when after Will thanked uncle Phil's help. He asked him for his money back, to which uncle Phil said "I'll play you for it" LOL

Can we all take a minute to appreciate the most important thing about this scene: James Avery being the only person in recorded history to look cool wearing both a belt and braces xD
This was the epitome of a real man. He exemplified what it is to be a man, a father/uncle in every possible way. All men black, white, Hispanic or Asian should strive for these qualities. In the whole entire series of FPOBA I never heard him curse gave a drinking or substance abuse. True intelligent man. R.I.P
He cursed a time or two. But it hit harder because it was so out of character for Uncle Phil. So when it happened you knew he was not playing with whoever it was directed at. That's why cursing should be used more sparingly..
I love how the guy next to Uncle Phil reacts when he eats the sandwich. I'm telling myself that James Avery insisted on this, this guy was skeptical, and then realized it worked.
It's a great scene but I suspect that most people understood what was about to happen - this isn't the first time a scene like this has been used in either tv or movies. Heck, Full House had a scene similar to this and it was five years before.
Uncle Phil taught me a valuable life lesson in this episode, in order to gain the advantage you gotta show some weakness to lull your opponent into false sense of security then you show your strength when they least expect it! This episode will always be my favourite I loved how Geoffrey was in on it the whole time and hid Lucille down his trousers 🤣🤣
I do that as a goalie lol… I pretend to be weak when it comes to positional play when I warm up for a hockey game (I’ll play the angle wrong, I’ll let some goals in when I’m actually focused on another puck/ball with my peripheral vision, and I’ll pretend to be weak with my butterfly style) then when the game starts… they’ll be targeting my strongest skills as a goalie and giving me the confidence to carry my team to a win.
You knew you were in trouble when I told you what I was doing because it meant that I felt “hot” as a goalie and nothing was gonna get me shook since you made the mistake of warming me up lol.
I love how Geoffrey burned that guy at 2:26 for making fun of uncle Phil, even though Geoffrey rips on all of them all the time he wasn't about to let anyone else do it 😂
theowlshack oh I see how you could have thought that, I think Geoffrey was not only insulting him saying he actually stinks but also he knew damn well uncle Phil was gonna hustle these men too 😂
I like to think that back in his days before affluence, Uncle Phil spent a lot of time at the table. He's the sort of character who may seem out-of-touch at first, but he's a man who never forgot where he came from. He's learned from both the hills and the hood.
I love the look on the hustler's face when Uncle Phil calls for Lucille. He barely reacts, just stares at the table in disbelief. Probably thinking "crap they got me". He knew it was over right then.
Uncle phil use to be a hustler before becoming a judge apparently lol. The dude cant say shit on how he got hustled since Uncle phil is also a judge. Ahahaha...

That wasn't even the biggest stick down there either
@@herculesbrofister265 Geoffrey had stones for days
As a Mexican born in Chicago the fresh prince of Bel it's my favorite show and my oldest brother we miss you Uncle Phil 😢😢😢 RIP
The fact that Geoffrey was in on the hustle makes it that more epic
James Avery is the reason there should never be a remake or reboot of this show. He's irreplaceable.
Amen to that
I have some bad news for you, then...
@@cf-4233 Can't believe it...! I've just seen the trailer after reading your message. 😵🤢
@@guillaumemichallat307 I heard the reboot is pretty solid
They shouldn’t even have replaced Vivian. But I get there was a fallout.
You cut out a great part. When Uncle Phil says "Thats my boy. You mess with him you mess with me"
YEAH!! *runs away*
“And 10% for his manager”
love that part too
It's the things that he does like that that makes it extra hurtful when Will says to Uncle Phil's face in the episode where his father leaves (again) "You are not my father!" There's literally years of character development that shows that Uncle Phils is obviously the father figure that Will needed but never had.
The other good part was at the end when after Will thanked uncle Phil's help. He asked him for his money back, to which uncle Phil said "I'll play you for it" LOL
Seeing Uncle Phil cut loose and enjoy himself while also disciplining Will is so wholesome.
*_"BREAK OUT LUCILLE!"_*
- The Shredder
Geoffrey is to the Banks family what Alfred is to the Wayne family.
Geoffrey vs The Joker would be classic!!
Jeoffrey vs Niles from the Nanny, that would be an epic "battler"...
Yeah, they’re both butlers. I feel like that’s a big part of both characters.
Bel air reboot, Geoffrey is a straight up assassin
Damn skippy!
Uncle Phil was the most GANGSTER character in that show. The dude had street smarts and book smarts. He was built like an ox and had the strength of one too but was always calm and calculated. True OG
We all strive to be like Uncle Phil
That episode where he tells Will's dad off is still an emotional kick in the testicles.😢
I freaking died when uncle Phil broke out Lucille and his boss voice 🤣🤣 I had a feeling he was faking the whole time
Still pure magic this hustle from Uncle Phil. Man said break out... Not give me... Break out!
Also gotta rate how gangsta Jeffrey is as well. Calmest dude
I love how uncle Phil was able to lure his opponent into a false sense of security in such a casual way.
The ol' rope-a-dope.
@@neilomac Rope a dope isn’t a deception, it’s an endurance strategy. This was pure sharking. 🦈
And Geoffrey was in on it
@@Matrim42 not tryin to be annoying but pool sharking refers to when people create some sort of distraction just as a player is taking his shot. This, on the other hand, is pool hustling.
@@lraoux Sharking can be distracting, yes, but it’s also a synonym for hustling. It’s also sometimes used to describe a good player with no sinister connotations.
I always come back for " Jeffrey break out Lucille " 🤣🤣
James Avery face is awesome lol... he's like let's go punk.
I miss Uncle Phil so much. Rest in peace.
'I'm not about to bet on a game I never played in my life'
He wasn't wrong...
and that was the real lesson to Will at least, dont put money on something you dont do, and if you do, take the loss like a man. he Lesson for the shark was if you shark ppl someone will do it to you
3:06 - And this was the moment James Avery ascended to God-tier in my eyes as a teen. To this day it's my favorite moment from the whole series.
Tough to beat, but I can do one better: "Legal Partner"
The moment he just grabs Will into a hug when he asks why his dad don’t want him
@@CustomizedUsername That's the best scene. Period. This is one of the best comedic ones. Did Uncle Phil ever have a bad scene? I don't remember one..
scariest chuckle ever burned to film
Same here mate
"break out Lucille"
Four words no one is going to forget:
"Geoffrey...Break out Lucille!"
Uncle Phil...JAMES AVERY...The real gangsta uncle we all need...RIP sir....!!!
I always forget how big James Avery was. Loved him in the Fresh Prince and of course, Shredder. RIP.
Break out Lucille.
Is Lucille wrapped in barbed wire?
Negan is smiling
The 3 most chilling words in this whole scene
Let’s all take a moment to remember the worlds best Uncle
Uncle Jesse and Uncle Hank:- Are we a joke to you
When Sam amd Dave soul man started playing...you knew... It was over for the other guy
Uncle Buck is also a good uncle.
never firget Uncle Iroh
Dad* The only father figure Will ever had and in the end really needed.
Still one of my favorite moments from all of Television. James Avery was so great in this role
I miss Uncle Phil. We need more of him in our lives.
For sure
Can we all take a minute to appreciate the most important thing about this scene: James Avery being the only person in recorded history to look cool wearing both a belt and braces xD
Seriously!! Who wears both a belt and suspenders?

when uncle Phil makes the shot while eating the burger that means Jeffery or Will went out to get a burger just so Phil could show off
Or they probably just make them there
I don't even want to think about where Geoffrey hid the burger
One of the best scenes of all time 😂😂😂 so glad we had this show and the brilliant actors who were apart of it
Uncle Phil and Danny Tanner are playing pool up in the heavens now 👼 ☁️ 🙏🏻
This was the epitome of a real man. He exemplified what it is to be a man, a father/uncle in every possible way. All men black, white, Hispanic or Asian should strive for these qualities. In the whole entire series of FPOBA I never heard him curse gave a drinking or substance abuse. True intelligent man. R.I.P
I like how you said black first.
Eso es hermosa.
I agree. Uncle Phill is iconic for being a badass father figure from the 90s.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
He cursed a time or two. But it hit harder because it was so out of character for Uncle Phil. So when it happened you knew he was not playing with whoever it was directed at. That's why cursing should be used more sparingly..
_"And let this be a lesson to you. Don't mess with my boy again. You mess with him, you're messing with me."_ - Uncle Phil
Yeahhhhh!
I love how the guy next to Uncle Phil reacts when he eats the sandwich. I'm telling myself that James Avery insisted on this, this guy was skeptical, and then realized it worked.
There's a lot to learn from uncle Phil, he's been a true role model for everyone in the family with his charm and manners.
Much better Black American tv dad than say, Bill Cosby... 🤣
More in reality to, the tough father, but also caring.
One of the most memorable scenes from this show. Who else remembers being like “Uncle Phil, no!” right along with Will? 😂😂
nobody
It's a great scene but I suspect that most people understood what was about to happen - this isn't the first time a scene like this has been used in either tv or movies. Heck, Full House had a scene similar to this and it was five years before.
A couple guys tried to hustle a friend and mine one time in the pool hall untell we raised them so high it was a shame if we losed lol.
Nah you could tell he was about to hustle him
Uncle Phil was the greatest tv dad to grow up watching! Back when tv shows weren’t about politics.
R.I.P James Avery. You'll always be missed.
Shout out to Geoffrey for being in on the hustle.
Goku has been trying to tell you😂
You can see him in the background smirking. 😊
I do this whenever I play poker. Never let your opponent know your next move
Uncle Phil was truly something special may God rest his soul.
One of my favourite scenes from this show. Uncle Phil set them up so perfectly
Shit got real when Lucille has entered the game and Phil's voice got deeper.
I love how Geoffrey was part of the Hustle
I miss uncle Phil. What a legend
Uncle Phil saves the day yet again ... not surprising at all.
Uncle Phil...one of the truly wonderful TV "Dad's" of all time.

Andy Griffith will always be tops though.
Not Hard after cosby
Uncle Shredder:"Rocksteady, break out Lucille!"
Rocksteady brings barbed wire baseball bat.
One of the coolest moments in sitcom history! RIP James Avery!
Uncle Phil was the best character on Fresh Prince.
I love how Geoffrey burned that guy at 2:26 for making fun of uncle Phil, even though Geoffrey rips on all of them all the time he wasn't about to let anyone else do it 😂
theowlshack oh I see how you could have thought that, I think Geoffrey was not only insulting him saying he actually stinks but also he knew damn well uncle Phil was gonna hustle these men too 😂
Facts
I'm allowed to call my family names. You, however are not.
“That’s right, Uncle Phil” cracks me up every time!
I come back and watch this a scene a lot. Makes me cry for some reason
I like to think that back in his days before affluence, Uncle Phil spent a lot of time at the table. He's the sort of character who may seem out-of-touch at first, but he's a man who never forgot where he came from. He's learned from both the hills and the hood.
While also having an old school beat to his step.
if I remember right he used to be a Malcolm X-esque civil rights activist in his younger days, so he definitely learned street shit
4:04 In this shot, the guy playing the Hustler has a big grin on his face when Avery lands the shot. He broke character because he was so impressed.
I love seeing stuff like that.
You can hear it in his voice too when he counts out the money, that kinda “I can’t even be mad, that was slick” energy
Uncle Phil uses Lucille to lay down the LAW. Negan uses Lucille to set the record straight.
She IS AWESOME!
My second favorite uncle Phil episode. Other than when Prince was upset about his father walking out. Such a quality actor.
I love the look on the hustler's face when Uncle Phil calls for Lucille. He barely reacts, just stares at the table in disbelief. Probably thinking "crap they got me". He knew it was over right then.
He's like "damn, da playa just got played".
Uncle phil use to be a hustler before becoming a judge apparently lol. The dude cant say shit on how he got hustled since Uncle phil is also a judge. Ahahaha...
Being a pool hustler probably helped Phil pay for law school.

That's why uncle Phil liked Will deep down, because he was always the one keeping life entertaining with his shenanigans 😂
Ohhhh, I have a feeling he sees his younger self in Will's shenanigans. Ain't no way a man like that got that way just from being a goody two shoes
The true father of tv. He never disappointed and always had his family back. Never reveal your strengths. Take note, especially to protect family no matter the situation. No violence just skill. Lots of lessons in this show.
