- can you dodge a blue shell with a boost panel / boost pad / booster in mk8dx? also why mushroom can dodge a blue shell, as it makes you invincible. you cannot outrun the blue shell with a mushroom. but you can outrun a blue shell on 200cc!
- Hry
Nintendo most likely made it intentional. They did this to most mario kart games and it kind of became a "tradition"
Dodging a blue shell with a mushroom is so loved that even Nintendo refuses to ruin it
You can Dodge a blue shell with a mushroom in Mario kart tour, and you get a lot of points from it, so it's definitly intentional
It's not most likely, things like this don't happen on accident in code.
@@_b7090based on the glitches i have seen i believe anything can happen on accident
Im pretty sure in wii it wasnt invincibility but actually avoiding the explision. Cuz im pretty sure you could use the quarter pipes, boosters and mushroom pads to avoid it in that game.

Answering my shower thoughts
bro hitting that blue wheel mushroom dodge is the best feeling in the world istg i did it once and started ascending
I was wondering if you could dodge a blue shell with a half pipe because it gives you the mushroom effect where you can drive across the off-road
I'll test it!
It is possible to outrun a Spiny Shell, just not directly by using an item. If the Spiny Shell is chasing the player in 1st for a certain amount of time and can't catch up, it will eventually disappear. This is best seen on the Yoshi Valley course, as its many branching paths of varying lengths could make the Spiny Shell take a route much faster or slower than the player it's chasing.
Did you not notice that he was saying that as Wario outran multiple blue shells? Meaning he was being sarcastic?
@@Teknanam That has nothing to do with my comment. I was not referring to that portion of the video.
@@harrybest2041
The ONLY part of the video that talks about outrunning a blue shell is that portion of the video. Its the only part of the video relevant to your comment. The rest was talking about using boost panels and mushrooms to dodge/fail to dodge the shells. I'm sorry, but I don't understand your comment.
@@Teknanam I'm talking about Spiny Shells *disappearing* after a certain amount of time has passed, no matter how close they are to the player. Nothing about this is mentioned or shown in the video.
@@harrybest2041
You know what IS mentioned in this video? A sarcastic statement that you can't outrun a blue shell. You know how your comment begins? Stating that it is possible to outrun a blue shell. Are you arguing you'd have made that comment here even if the statement in the video was absent? Because without that statement, your comment comes off as randomly placed. Like the video's main point was explaining why boost pads can't protect you from blue shells while mushrooms can.
Thank you for this! I'll stop trying to go for boost panels to dodge now
If you have the chance you can use it to recover from the impact.
I thoroughly enjoyed this short
About your last quote on not being able to outrun a blueshell, you actually can on 200CC. On Mute City, if the Blue Shell gets into the area behind you that it sits in before going into attack as you enter the boost panel spam section (so right after the start of the course), you can outrun the Blue Shell long enough that it will actually despawn. I have done this multiple times on local games. So, it could be just local and not online, but it is a thing that can be done.
Oh you can outrun blue shells on 200 CC on any course as long as there are no especially sharp turns. That last bit was a joke. Shortcat has actually done a video on how to outrun a blue shell.
It's almost like that was a sarcastic comment from him. And it's almost like he proved that to be the case by showing gameplay of him outrunning several blue shells on 200 CC Toad's Turnpike.
I love you and your content shortcat! The last time I commented on one of your videos was when I said how playing online at 2k wasn’t fun because of the immense skill diff between me and other players. Now I’m at 13k and having a lot more fun playing as it is challenging to get a 1st place. You will forever be intertwined with my Mario karting heart. I can wait till you get 1mil, see you then ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Wow, congrats! That's amazing progress. Keep it going!
Do you like cubing?
The game is programmed specifically that using a mushroom will prevent you from being hit by a blue shell targeting you. This is also why if you are next to a different player targeted by a blue shell and use your own mushroom as the explosion happens, you'll still be hit.
Hey really interesting vid. It’s rare to see some mechanic that I wasn’t already aware of
Eyyyyy bayesic it's you!
Somehow it's surprising to see you in a CZcams comment even though it's a Mario kart one
No outrunning the blue shell eh I'll see you on Yoshi valley 🤠🚗
This would probably have the same result as The boost panel with the half-pipes with a well timed perfectly framed just might work or not.
I think I've seen a clip on twitter where someone dodged a blue shell on a half pipe
they freaked tf out lmao
edit: I think it was in Wii actually, but the half pipe does still give the mushroom boost right?
@@djroscurro9859If we're talking about MK8D, yeah. It has the tire flame effect like the mushroom so I'm assuming it's mechanically the same. I could be wrong though.
@@djroscurro9859 it does bit in MKW its the janky slope on maple treeway that make u dodge a blue from the half-pipes boost or a shroom from the leaf piles

The guy who does outrunning blue shell videos: you lie
Mushroom has invincibility frames he even used a mushroom in the wall and the explosion still missed him despite being within the explosion.
I still remember how the Blue Shells acted in Double Dash!! and Wii. It was traumatizing
Wow! Amazing!
This actually blew my mind so yeah amazing yt short. I always wondered if jts possible to do it with a boost pad but was confused if maybe it gave less speed or something.
Great to finally have this answered! ❤
That's a super neat hidden mechanic and explains the difference fantastically
Shortcat, on Sweet Sweet Canyon, you can use a orange mini-turbo to get trough the chocolate shortcut on the pink path and land on the blue one close to the end. Is this faster?
Bro has opps with the entire lobby💀💀

Proceeds to outrun blue shell
I saw this tip about dodging the blue shell a while ago and while I was playing Mario Kart Wii I had an opportunity to do it . I thought " Oh it probably doesn't work here , I've only ever seen it in the newest game it probably won't do anything " . I was very wrong , it legitimately worked and I was screaming about it until I finished the race .
Rauru wasnt lying about links arm as when you obtain your first heart container he states your negating the efdects of gloom.
Minaru wasnt lying either she was just stating what they knew about dagonification at the time. Yes it is true that this was reverseable the zonai didnt know that which is why she wasnt lying.
So what you're saying is that the mushroom basically makes you Parry parry... can you parry that in tears of the Kingdom?
Can you dodge a blue shell using the mkw trick of trailing a red/green shell and going down the waterfall on Koopa cape while having the blue shell hit the trailed item? I assume the explosion would hit you right?
Dang dylan, its pretty impressive to have two succeesful channels
Imagine 100000000000 billion blue shells coming after you. It would be a goodbye to the universe irl
Your only saving grace is the Invincibility Frames
Does this mean you could dodge the other shells with a mushroom? If not, how come it only works with the blue shell?
it's hard coded to work like that from nintendo
also wanted to ask that
Maybe because it’s “different” kinds of damage that is registered. Red and green shells are solid projectiles that is present in all kinds of games, the blue shell coming down is just the animation and has no hit box (I think) which means it deals explosion damage and not “direct” damage which is for some reason unable to affect the player when using a mushroom
The explosion does have its own hitbox, as it can also damage other racers too close to its target. (It can also cause players running into the later half of the explosion to spinout instead of being popped up)
The explosion itself is likely coded as a separate damage type from normal explosions to specifically check if a player is using a mushroom to "dodge" the explosion. (It's also worth mentioning that in battle mode, the mushroom dash counts as an attack that can steal an opponent's balloon.)
@@SmashCrafter321 that makes much more sense because since it is the player itself rather than a separate hit box, the player must be given a small period of invincibility allowing for both the stealing of balloons in battle and the dodging of blue shell explosions
My proudest moment in mario kart was when i was about to get hit by a blue shell, but there was an *impeccably* placed mushroom on the ground that i hit to dodge it
Nice vid shortcat!
Regardless if it allows you to dodge the blue shell, you should always go for to boost panel in an attempt for recovery.
That ending was just crazy.😅
You can dodge a blue shell with a dash panel in Mario Kart Tour
12 blue shells chasing wigler, to 10 people doing a manhunt on dream
"Well, let's find out."
**video starts buffering**
Yes
Weirdly, it is possible to dodge a blue shell with a boost panel in mario kart tour. Only managed to do it once and the game counted it as a blue shell dodge
And just like that, he answered what we all questioned
"There's no outrunning the blue shell"
*proceeds to do exactly that*
I remember you actually could dodge blue shells back in Mario Kart Wii by drifting and using the mini-turbo at the right time. I think I pulled it off maybe 3 times, but man did it feel good.
Ty I actually didn’t know this I have subscribed!❤
Fun fact: Dodging blue shells with mushrooms originated from Double Dash. In that game, it was very likely unintentional; you can dodge blue shells and even shocks by drifting hard enough in that game.
Source: It happened to me, both on that incredibly sharp u-turn on DK Mountain.
"It just cant be done"
Or can it?
*Vsauce music
Real question is how are you getting a boost mushroom in first place?
It's exactly like getting hurt while taking a mushroom in a regular Mario game.
"Theres no such thing as dodging a blue shell in mario kart. It just cannot be done." U said it like a prophecy LMAO
Can you dodge other items with the mushroom? Love your content!
"there is no such thing as outrunning a blue shell"
200cc: challenge accepted
One thing that also works is slipping on a banana at the right time
One of my favourite things about the animal crossing track is that you can use it's fruit to dodge a blue shell
Blue shell: you can run but you will die tired
Another cool blueshell skip i found the other day is in double dash on dk mountain, the cannon actually makes it possible to dodge the blueshell
In other games we call it "Invincibility Frames" or IF.
Time to add this to the list of unintended mechanics that later became full features in gaming list.
Actually looking at the footage, you hopped and then the blue shell hit you right before the actual speed kicked in, or maybe a microsecond after. I feel like it you changed the timing of when you actually touch the boost panel, it might work.
Also a sound box lets you dodge one of the blue shells just do it at the right time
Found a glitch? Make it a feature!
I have been wondering about that because I have failed every time I tried. Thank you.
"dread it run from it the blue shell arrives all the same"
“All dreams have meaning”
My dreams: 0:43
So basically, mushrooms have some sort of invincibility frame system
These kinds of videos dont surprise me considering it’s coming from the myth the legend the one and only Jperm!
“Why is that”
Me: cuz it was programmed that way 😂
The reason why it gives you invincibility is based off of super Mario bros, and super Mario, due to a mushroom essentially giving you a "second life" except of falling off maps etc
Mushrooms allowing for dodges is totally a purposeful interaction, that allows for a player's skill expression and a shot at keeping their rightful place in the lead
I know a lot of people who also think its a bug (me too for a while) tho when i tried out mario kart tour, i got one of these badges for dodging a blue shell with a mushroom, so nintendo is aware and intentionally programmed it there too.
You can dodge a blue shell in MKWii however, even without a boost panel and mushroom, just by using a kart at full mini turbo. I did it a few years back and was surprised myself as I didn't even intend to do so
I once dodge it with a boost panel, well-timed, at Mute City. After getting redded I notice an oncoming blue, so I scurried to the nearest boost panel and I dodged it.
Might not entirely be the reason. Back in MKDS, if your acceleration was super high (like Dry Bomber), you can mini-turbo out of a blue shell, especially if you're snaking
As said from another video, the mushroom doesnt have "i-frames", the blue shell however, has dodge frames coded for the mushroom boost
That's a convoluted way of saying using mushrooms gives invincibility frames
They give invincibility frames to blue shells only
That makes sense!! The other day I used the mushroom and didn’t see a banana and the banana disappeared!
Back then, I always thought that the mushroom makes you invincible, but recently I found out that you outspeed it. But after seeing this, my oroginal idea was actually true.
Between the two warios, the one with the mushroom was immediate speed compared to the dash pannel. Not really going to question it because you've probably already banged your head against the wall enough trying it.
You can dodge a blue shell with a boost pad if the game is lagging enough it happened once to me in online
Makes sense that a mushroom that helps you damage boost in other games can help you boost out of the damage. 🎉
The reason it works off of a mushroom and not a dash panel is actually very Mario based (and a bit IRL)
Mario platformers: Mushroom makes you bigger, take damagez you go back to small character, but gain Invincibility frames.
Mario Kart: Mushroom boosts your kart (Akin to making it bigger), but the boost doesn't last forever and using it to dodge a blue shell is akin to taking damage, so you gain the invincibility frames.
Think for a second that, when the ability to dodge a blue shell with a mushroom appeared, speedrunning (a type of race, so to speak) was becoming WIDELY known, and one of the basic tricks for Mario is sacrificing a mushroom to gain I-frames (Invincibility frames) to get past a tough section and potentially cut down on a stage's time, referred to as "damage boosting"
Dodging a blue shell with a mushroom is LITERAL damage boosting to keep your lead in the race, if you REALLY think about it.
I swear I dodged it like this once and it’ll never happen again to me. It was a wild moment
In Mario Kart Tour I managed one single time to somehow dodge a Blue Shell (I think on 200cc) with a trick off a ramp. It was the weirdest thing ever. Had to be a bug but as far as I'm concerned I'm the only person in the world to ever dodge a Blue with a trick boost.
Oh my God this reminds my uncle dodged the blue shell in a race
You can also use the small pow box thing to break it
Wario dies by nuking himself
I'm not sure if the mushroom always has this small invulnerability period, or if it only applies to this specific interaction. What's interesting though is that a similar interaction exists in Mario Kart Super Circuit, where you can "block" an incoming red shell by using a mushroom right as it's about to hit you.
I remember dodging blue shell in tour with boost panel
You should make a series busting random mk8d myths
Maybe it has something to do with certain aspects and parts of the track going different speeds and the blue shell adjusting combined with the bogus programming of the mushroom vs the blue shell
Wario! The legend.
You can dodge the blue shell with that horn thing gadget, it worked for me at least 😊
Fun fact: I'm not sure about DS or Double Dash, but in Wii, you *had* to be moving in order to dodge with a Mushroom. You couldn't use the Mushroom while stopped
We all have our demons in life. But those demons are nothing compared with the blue shell.
That’s really strange, you’d think they would just take out the invincibly
Its because traditionally in SMB mushrooms give you the ability to get hit once and survive. Dun-na nun-na nun-na!
At 200CC with perfect drifts, you can outrun Blue Shells albeit its very difficult
i dodged a blue by bouncing off a mushroom pad in mkwii. i bounced precisely at the right time. i was absolutely stunned.
also in mkwii there are rare occurrences of dodging blues with just an mt.
who knows if they let these things into mk8dx
You can actually outrun the blueshell in certain situations in 200cc. Blueshell as an item has a lifespan that, if you drive fast enough, you’ll see the blueshell eventually vanish after a period of time
