Talk about a flashback!!! I lived in Duluth in the mid 70s when my dad worked for the DM&IR.....My mom would bring me and my 3 brothers down to watch the ships all of the time. Hell....I even remember the night/morning The Fitz sank.......Such a tragic loss. Great video.......and some great memories of my childhood.
Definitely a great video. I'm from st johns newfoundland. I was very fortunate to watch a huge cruise ship head out of harbor. I was at the most narrow point. The ship was all lit up. I was actually that close to the ship as it was passing thru I could hear people talking on the boat.
Being from the Niagara region I have many memories of the Welland ship canal and the lakers who have navigated its waters but this is sensational and thank you for the video!

I remember when I was a kid in 1975 my Dad drove by that bridge it was nighttime so we didn't see anything other than bright lights but it was pretty cool to see anyways, they don't have those here in Memphis Tennessee ✌️

Incredible!!!! My son and I had a unexpected encounter at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge & Tunnel when we saw a U.S. Navy Submarine come up from under to go over the tunnel and then submerged back down after clearing the tunnel. I thought it was a buoy at first glance but it kept moving then I realized it was the periscope from the submarine. The expression on my son’s face was priceless. I wish I had video of that moment.
Love Duluth. Grew up going there, spent a few years there at school too. The lift bridge is always a cool place to just go and hang out around in the summer time.

This is one of the most spectacular sights in the United States. That ship went through a VERY narrow passage. Watching a big Superlaker at close range is a real thrill - and in a place like this, you're likely to get very wet. I grew up in Wisconsin and always wanted to go to Duluth-Superior, but didn't get there until I was 68 years old and had lived in California for almost half a century. Two things people do not understand: 1) the "hole" in the side is just the top coat of paint scrubbed off because of passing through locks. There is no hole. 2) the "dirty water" is just the sediment mixed up with the water because of rough waters and it being forced through the narrow pass.

I've always wanted to be one of the guys on those 1000' vessels. Coming out of the harbor to literally spend a few weeks at sea. But usually I'm just watching from the old Arrowhead Bridge while I hook up walleye, cats, and sturgeon. I've been in AZ for a year too, I'm looking forward to the cold, the wind, the woods, and especially fish.

Very cool, my grandpa used to sail the great lakes before the Korean war. He was the engineer for the coal boilers that powered the steam engines. He says that the entire boat used to go under water, but that they never were scared because they new the boats were made to handle the waves. Still amazed by his stories!

This is a great video! I have been to Duluth a lot of times and those Superior waves can be real big. You captured the reality of being on a lake freighter. When I was eighteen, I boarded the John G. Munson from the mailboat(Westcott) in the Detroit river. I wish that someone could have made a video of that.
My wife and I just returned from visit o Duluth. We stayed at Fitger's and could watch the ships come and go from the hotel. Very nice lake front in that area.
It’s truly beautiful in person. The waves are giant and when they crash on the shore you can smell the mist in the cold air. There are seagulls everywhere but don’t really bother you. All sorts of WW2 machinery, all sorts of rich history about the iron range and the importance of Duluth shaping the future of Minnesota. The steep hills. The nature up north. The giant beautiful rock formations. While looking out on superior it seems that it goes on forever. There is just something beautiful and peaceful about Duluth.
It’s in neither Minnesota. I live in superior which is literally like a mile away across a bridge. Called the Twin Ports since it’s basically the port town version of the Twin Cities.
You should see the lake when it's really rough out there- scary huge waves that can sink a ship like that. I love the harbor at Duluth, always a stop on my way home from the Boundary Waters along with the nearby maritime museum.
I too am enjoying watching the ships. I was surprised how dirty the water is. I suppose we have the same thing on the Pacific. But it just doesn’t appear brow.

I see these ships every day. They travel from the Gulf of St Lawrence to Duluth. That is half way across North America!!

It’s in neither Minnesota. I live in superior which is literally like a mile away across a bridge. Called the Twin Ports since it’s basically the port town version of the Twin Cities.

You should see the lake when it's really rough out there- scary huge waves that can sink a ship like that. I love the harbor at Duluth, always a stop on my way home from the Boundary Waters along with the nearby maritime museum.
