Steam deck is a really fun little device. Ive modded mine thoroughly, from changing out the thermal paste to a honeywell phase change material pad, to replacing the SSD with a 512gb version, replacing the backplate to a jsaux thermal dissipation one, to making it a dual boot version with windows 10. Really fun to customise this little thing and quite affordable too

Personally the most impressive thing isn't the SD being a whole PC in a handled size, as many companies had already done that years before (GPD, AYA, etc).
The real impressive and unique things IMO are the price it's being sold at, and the OS, which is making the SD feel more like plug-and-play than any other PC/handled PC. That's game changer, it will likely reshape the industry in the years to come.

When the Asus Rog Ally was announced a good 75% of everyone was sayign it's going to be the SD killer, the journalists were absolute worst. Everyones opinion changed after a few days when it was found out that the Asus Rog Allys battery can't last as long as the SD when playing lighter games. The SD has better scuffs, design, auto-resume and track pads. I don't mind the Rog Ally, I wasn't a fan of how the SD was instantly attacked, acting like it was going to become yesterdays news. If it wasn't for the SD gang out there, the Rog ally would have tarnished the SD's reputation, go team!

@@OHCAM5 But if you compare it to other handhelds that render on the go, youll see that its actually quite standard. Even f.e. Ayaneo 2 doesnt keep up as long, since you have to tune up the watts up to 22-30 to compare or outperform the Steam Deck. And that also results in a short lived experience. If you want to compare it to the switch however, you definetly have to look at the games that are played. If you play f.e. Indie games on the Deck you also can get a playtime of like 6-8hrs (depending on your settings and game) which is closely compareable to the switch (and definetly enough overall). May I ask you question: What made you decide to buy a steam deck?
I have an aging pc and while it can still play most of the games I'm interested in, I'm wondering if I should buy a steam deck. My main reason is because I have a major backlog of games but am sometimes too tired in the evening to get behind my computer, as silly as that sounds.

@@chocolatMouse Not the person you asked, but as someone who has fairly decent PC (3070 Ti, Ryzen 5 3600, 32 GBs of RAM), I recently bought a Steam Deck for many reasons, one of which you highlighted. When I get on my PC, I tend to play with friends, which means I only play multiplayer. I have several single player games that I want to play but even when I have the intention of using my PC for that, I get sucked into some competitive shooter or co-op game. The Steam Deck allows me to "disconnect" from my PC and take those single player games to the couch or the bed and play them there without the draw of playing with friends. It's a first world problem, but it has been so nice getting back in to those games.
Another reason is that I want to be able to play some games on that couch or my bed. I bought a gaming laptop, but it's clunky and still too similar to my PC that I just ended up not using it as much.
Final reason is the capabilities. There is so much you can do with the Steam Deck as highlighted in the video. I've done some emulation on it and it's so awesome playing retro games that I grew up with. I could pull out my old Gameboy and Pokemon Blue, but why do that when I can use the Steam Deck to do the same thing?
All of this to say, if you are considering buying one, it's a great time to do it. And has been worth it for me.

The truth of the matter is with all of the other platform dev companies that want to compete with the Steam Deck (or Valve for that matter) there are several benchmarks they would have to contend with. Not just one or two but several ie; library size, usability, price, peripherals, modability of software, modability of hard ware, etc. How many other gaming companies are going to let you install an additional operating system? or remove the default one? Open up your device to swap the hard drive for a bigger one without a hefty premium? Or knowing companies like Sony and Apple; make everything super proprietary so they can control the market? Valve set the bar extremely high for the next gen handhelds... which they have already started working on no less!

was holding off since launch to get a steam deck as I figured the improvement for a steam deck 2 would be sooooo crazy to just hold on but now a new handheld ROG Ally that came outta no where it kinda looks like and the main differences being, Not steamOS, not that big community for/plugins/fixes, and it being a windows device. I am not sure if you can be able to open it and change the parts easily like a deck and also rely on the support valve and the community it has to fix issues with plugins and guides.
This is my big worry for the ROG Ally even though it being almost 2x better than the deck in every aspect. Having a little community and the company just releasing it and not further developing the handheld beyond.
I would suggest waiting for those looking into a Steam deck that can hold on a bit to see the ROG Ally stream on May 11 where they will probably go in further depth of the device and also confirm the price of it. Also those who don't care about the ROG ally, you should just wait for a sale on the deck. I wanna add this. As a guy with two jobs little time to play, steam deck is a wonder. I have a huge library of games and i didn't really get into most of them because some indie games feel odd when played on PC, but on the deck they feel right at home.
I totally changed my steam library layout now, and Humble bundle offered $6 monthly for 3 months for choice. Usually i wouldn't bother with it but now all those indie meh games that i wouldn't play at a desk oe a huge tv, i find them as a really good deal now.
Ans this is me with 2 PCs and one PS5 i still prefer the steam deck. Most of the time i am too tired to sit at a desk or setting up my PC on the couch (i have to get the keyboard and mouse, plug them i, turn the TV on, switch to the PC input, turn on the PC, navigate through windows) that's too much hassle maaan, when i am tired and i just want to chill.

Good point regarding tons of games not being available on the Switch. On the flip side, PC gets tons of Switch games, barring those Nintendo 1st party titles. (Of course, there are ways, but I won't speak of them here.) What really irks me about the Switch, and most consoles for that matter, is the longevity of your library. As I type this, Nintendo is shutting down the eShop for both the 3ds and the Wii U. They've already shut down the shops for the DSi and the Wii. If you amassed a digital library on those platforms, sucks for you, those games are now gone. You can try and download them now so you can play them after tomorrow, but once that device gives out, you're SOL. Meanwhile, I've had my Steam account since 2004, and EVERY game I've bought on that platform is still there and still playable. Steam is huge and isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and any games I buy today will still be playable years and years from now.

I agree with your selection of competition, but I'd draw different conclusions
The xbox series s and ps5 digital are awesome for people that really only play one game series, like CoD or fifa. They generally buy 2-5 games for a console and that's it. To compare: if I only fished twice a year, I wouldn't care for getting the best bang for the buck on my rods or bait.
The switch is similar, but more aimed at families. The deck is for casual PC gamers, those that love to play their comfort games but don't play all triple A games. It can do it when ya want it to, but it's not made for it. It just runs everything that you'd want it to and your aging rig cannot.
As for the deck 2: yea we won't see an announcement with a performance uplift till 2024 earliest, with a release in 2025. There simply isn't any affordable and appreciable performance leap yet.

its up to you as always, as far as i've seen, the plastic on the steam deck doesn't heat up basically at all other than at the exhaust vent so even if you got a case, i dont think it'd affect temps meaningfully. Storage is subjective, but you can always get more SD cards and they're hot swappable, meaning you dont have to turn the deck off to switch cards, so you can have multiple if you need more storage. cheers!

I got my 256gb last year and I love it so much. The included case is a nice addition, haven't seen a reason to upgrade. I don't have a skin on it, but I do have a Spigen slim armor or whatever it's called. Fits well and never noticed an issue with heat (it also helps to revert to the old fan curve in settings for better cooling, although a bit louder). Personally, I would recommend getting the 256gb at least - the SSD is faster for OS, games, and also needed to do certain performance boosts (swap) which you can learn about on Cryobyte33's channel to maximize power out of your Deck. I also use a samsung evo micro SD and it's only slightly slower than the internal SSD when it comes to loading/downloading/installing, so honestly a more cost-effective way to boost storage than the 512gb model. I have the brand-name dock, but you can get away with a cheaper one for sure. JSAUX even sells a special dock with a M.2 slot for you to add your own SSD when docked. The anti-glare screen on the 512 is probably unnecessary because most screen protectors would counteract that anyways. The normal screen is great and you can get an extra splash of color by installing the VibrantDeck plugin via Decky Loader. And lastly, a personal note, I use a ps5 dualsense via bluetooth and setting the trackpad on the controller up as your mouse is SUPER helpful for navigating, especially in desktop mode. Hope you choose to pull the trigger, and enjoy yourself!

I'm really undecided whether to choose the 256 or the 512 gb model and the main problem you won't believe it but it's really the screen. I'm afraid that the screen of the 512gb model has duller colors and keep in mind that whichever model I choose I will apply tempered glass on the screen so I'm afraid that if I choose the 512gb model I will have a terrible final image! On the other hand being the first model released by Valve I would like all the more that it was the top, I'm still very scared for the screen of the 512gb model!

The problem of the other handhelds is that while some of them are in fact more powerful than the steam deck, they are also less efficient, wich means that generally speaking, they need more TDP to get the same performance of the deck, not to mention they need to go soooo high in wattage consumption to bypass that performance, wich means you are going to drain the battery a lot faster than the deck, to get the same or better performance, so i think its not a good deal in the portable context, because you are going to need to spend double the price to get better performance but at the cost of a ridicuouls battery life for a handhelds.
