I think they used the purple square as the light color. Purple was the clients favorite color.

I recently used a similar method for making a chessboard. I laminated 4 of the strips then a glue up. After that I cut again and reversed into the chessboard formation and glued again. Once glued I then added the resin. It came out pretty good.

YES! I have long form videos where I poured actual copper powder into epoxy to give it a metalic look. There are also mica powders that give the epoxy a similar effect. Thank you for watching.

From what I recall this took about a gallon and a half of epoxy.

How do you coat the bottom?
The entire piece was finished with Rubio Monocoat.

That sounds beautiful. How would you do the alloy?
@@BenVanKirk I would make them inlays. Probably aluminum so they could be molded. Maybe use a little rose-gold paint for “black and plain silver for “white.”
I would opt for a very minimal set. Pawns could be small cylinders with a single band inlay, about a 3rd of the piece’s height from the top.
For the Rooks, I would likely follow the same structure as a pawn, but make it scaled about 30% larger than a pawn, and give it a metal cap at the top.
For the king, a cross inlay on the front, as well as a crown. For the Queen, 3 ringlets around the body and a crown. For the bishops, small cones on the tops of the pieces. For knight, you could make a slight horse-head shape and give the illusion of reigns with some inlays.

Very nice! May I ask if the tape caused ridges/lines on the underside of the board? Those would be a pain to sand out.
Wyatt - those marks were left over from the tape and CA glue. If I were to do this over, I would probably attach each block to the mold with some fast-curing epoxy instead of using painters' tape and CA glue.

I poured epoxy mixed with purple pigment into the mold around the wood. I use Super clear Deep Pour Liquid Glass. Cost about $100 per gallon. Thank you for watching!

That would be the idea. This client wanted purple specifically but you could do just about any color imaginable.

How did you get the swirly effect in the purples?
The trick is to swirl the epoxy when it slightly thicker than honey. Also, take your time so you don't introduce new air bubbles into the piece. If you swirl it too soon it will not hold. Thanks for watching!

The wood squares don't touch and keeping them from floating in the epoxy.
@@BenVanKirk There's the answer to my similar question, lol. So the key was to glue or adhere them down to something beforehand; makes sense.

The key to getting any swirl or pattern to stay in the final project is to wait until the epoxy is slightly thicker than honey. Once it's at that consistency you can swirl it or make any other design you want, and it will hold. Just be careful to take it slow so you don't introduce air bubbles into the piece. @@BenVanKirk I've never worked with epoxy before. Did you use a specific epoxy to color ratio? And about how much epoxy did the whole project take?
@@ginesey one trick is to add the color... take a clear disposable plastic cup and "scoop" out a little to see how dark the color is. I think this project took about 1 gallon or epoxy total. Just take rough measurements of the total square inches then use a conversion calculator on google to convert square inches to gallons or liters.
